No tolerance for sexual abuse, especially by priests (http://www.orthodoxnews.netfirms.com/126/No%20tolerance.htm)

That article is very disturbing to say the least! "the revelation in this issue by National Herald investigative reporter, Mr. Theodore Kalmoukos, that our Church paid $1.5 million to the victims of sexual crimes committed by our “priests,” is more than shocking. It is astounding." 1.5 million is a lot of coin for us, let us pray that our Bishops defrock the offenders and be open and honest about this, instead of sweeping it under the rug.

Is that a news article or an opinion piece? Where are the facts?

Anyway, we certainly need to make sure any abusive priests in the Church are defrocked, excommunicated, and turned over to the civil authorities along with all evidence available to us, and the victims need to be counseled and helped in any way possible. This is a grave and ugly kind of sin.

That is the link that gives the story plus the editorials in the National Herald which is the Greek Newspaper for Greeks not just Orthodox.

From the article:
Will the Greek Orthodox Church make the same egregious errors as the Catholic Church?
Well I certainly hope not. But I also hope that all the sins of all men and women will be brought to the Light as Jesus promised.

I will say, however, that I've heard less than sterling things about OCL and its credibility, and I think this organization has a plausible motivation to exaggerate and lie about this particular issue.

Still, let this be a lesson to us and all Orthodox not to become pharisaical about the troubles in the Catholic church. The Orthodox Church is not for sinless, stainless people.
It is for sinners. We would do well to remember that at all times, including now, and following the Publican, cast ourselves prostrate on the ground in repentance for our own sins, which are certainly worse.

May God have mercy upon the souls of all involved.

Let's know all the facts first. I don't have all that much respect for the OCL--they are the ones that are suing the GOA. Could it be that this could be an offshoot of the suit?

The National Herald newspaper was the first publisher of the story, it is a Greek Community newspaper and is a secular paper much like the daily newspaper of your town.
I know the topic is troubling and the messenger of such tidings is an easier target than the story they bring.

Jeff, there have been very heated threads at OC.net concerning the actions of pokrov, especially WRT what seems to be slanderous accusations against Abp. DMITRI that based on what I have seen are without merit.
