First I just want to say whoever managed to get the forums split, thank you! It feels so...peaceful...and...nurturing, now that all the fighting has mysteriously traveled to the new prog forum :P .
Anyway, I'm sure someone has already thought this one through, but it just struck me for the first time the other day and I wanted to share it.
Trad SDAs are constantly being called legalists because of Sabbath and probably because of our stance on jewelry, food, etc. as well. I was just thinking about this the other day, because I realize our works don't save us, but at the same time, where do God's commandments come in?
Then it hit me.
Of course commandments are still relevant. In fact, I believe that the idea that the Law is void is perhaps the grandest deception Satan has pulled off yet in modern Christianity.
The entire sin problem originated with the disobeying of a simply command. God said do not eat from the tree. Why? Well, He's God and He said so. But they did it anyway.
I see some parallels with the Sabbath. Other commandments are ethical and such and even nonChristians could obey them without much problem, but the Sabbath? There isn't a real moral reason (according to the world's understanding) to do so. But God did say to keep it holy.
Could the Sabbath be a second test, as the tree in Eden? Christians say that the Law is void now, when the very sin problem hinges on the disobeying of it...ironic.

It's so good to see you again Andrew! And yes, it's pretty peaceful here except when it's not. LOL! We still get raided occasionally.
I agree with you that even non-believers can keep some of the commandments without batting an eye...but the Sabbath is the only one that takes pre-planning and human effort. It also takes some dying to self and the secular world....and let's face it, some people just aren't willing to put forth the effort.
People want a Savior...not a LORD. (Seems like I heard that somewhere before? :) )
Here's how I see it....if a perfect Man could be tortured and nailed to a cross to die for MY ugly sins, then I can give Him what He wants the most, and that's my TIME.
But as a woman, I can tell you, that preparing for the Sabbath isn't always easy...but it's such a relief to know that I get a full day of REST and a whole day with my Provider instead of just being "churchy" for two hours a week.
It's such a wonderful blessing...but some Christians HATE it. I'm serious, they hate it. You mention the Sabbath and they get angry and the venom flows.
People don't like being told what to do (even if it's by God Himself) and they want a "passing by" relationship with Him. I had that for a long time and it's miserable.
I can remember only praying when I NEEDED something or when I was scared.
Now, I find myself praying for people I don't even know. Seriously, you want everyone to know Him and to love Him, and for them to know the kind of security you feel. Amen?
I don't feel like I'm suffocated or pinned down, I feel wrapped. Covered. Saved.
I think we should start trying to express the true blessing that the Sabbath brings to our lives instead of just pointing others in the direction of its truth in scripture.
It can be right in front of someone and they'll REFUSE to see it.
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
The saddest part about that verse?
He says "MY people are destroyed......."
It's the people that say they know Him.
He that sayeth I know Him and keepeth NOT His commmandments...is a what?
It's a sad state of affairs but every day as I dive into the Word, I swear it starts jumping off the page at me.
We have a living LORD. It isn't about us.

Psa 119:35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
Psa 119:47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.

The 10 commandments are the standard of Christian conduct. James likened them to a mirror/looking glass of women. They show us our imperfections and our needs to go to the water (Jesus) for cleansing.
You take away the mirror, you take away the need of water for cleansing.
Consider the translituration of Hebrew word for 'sabbath':
sabbath = s-abba-oth
s: prefix
abba: father
oth: sign, flag, mark

If the Law is void what is sin? What condemns the wicked?

The Law is not void. I was referring to the belief of many other Christians in the world today.
