View Full Version : Which Bible version do you prefer to use?

I remember asking this question a while ago when I first joined CF, but would now like to make it as a poll.

Of course, there's no debate allowed and obviously there is no "right" answer...

So, which Bible version do you as an Orthodox prefer to use? If you use more than one, just vote for your favourite one.

My preference is the New English Bible, but I also use the Revised Standard Version and the New English Translation among others.

Orthodox New Testament for the New Testament. And either KJV or RSV for the Old Testament.

Wow! I was really surprised no one selected the NASB except me. I hae the Orthodox Study Bible NT on order through the church bookstore and it hasn't come in yet...
I can't wait to see it and read it...

I currently use KJV, NRSV, and *sometimes* NIV (which is now too protestant for my taste). I'm thinking of ordering this one:

Does anyone else have this one? If so, what do you think of it?

I can't wait to see it and read it...The only text of the NASB that I have is in a big 4 version parallel Bible that I got for Christmas one year from my parents, it has the KJV, NASB, NEB and the Jerusalem Bible. I never liked the NASB because they kept the text in verse format, and thus not in paragraph form, which makes more sense, and less of a chance to use individual verses as proof texts for this, that, or another.

I was told that Orthodox Christian prefer the textus receptus/KJV/NKJV because the early church fathers quoted from that text, is it true? Most Orthodox I speak with read the KJV...any thoughts on this?

The Church Fathers when they quote the New Testament seem to be very eclectic when it comes to the text. And the Great Codex Sinaititcus is as Orthodox as one can get being that St Catherine's is the oldest Orthodox Monastery in the world.

So far we have a wide range of answers which is great. It appears there is no real favourite yet. :)

Hi GDE
While the Bible you are looking at from Light and Life is a fine one, I'd suggest faking it with what you have for now until the complete Orthodox Study Bible with the LXX OT comes out in 2005.
Just my 2 cents worth!

Hey SP,
Good to see you here in TAW
I think that the ECFs would have quoted from the original Greek texts as the KJV didn't come on the scene until the 17th Century. It is true however , that in terms of English New Testament translations, none are more closely aligned with the Textus Receptus than the KJV/NKJV, hence the use of NKJV for the Orthodox Study Bible NT.
The only authorized version of the OT for Orthodox however is the Septuigant or LXX (http://www.ccel.org/bible/brenton/) The only English version available is the one ;linked here, it is from the 19th century, and is, shall we say, ..clunky. The Orthodox Study Bible Old Testament Project (www.lxx.org) to be completed in 2005 will contain an english translation with commentary by Orthodox Scholars and will be in the more "user friendly" NKJV, to match the NT OSB.
Hope this clears things up for you a little, stop back any time.

The use of the NKJV for the Orthodox Study Bible had more to do with Nelson Publishing owning that text then it did with anything else.
