In responce to a prayer rope being one of the new items in the CF Shop, i decided to do a bit of research on what prayer ropes were really about, and found this brief bit on wikipedia

A prayer rope is a loop made up of knots, usually of wool, that is used by Eastern Orthodox Christians to count the number of times they have prayed the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." Historically it typically had 100 knots, although prayer ropes with 50 or 33 knots can also be found in use today. There is typically a knotted cross at one end, and a few beads at certain intervals between the knots.

Its invention is attributed to Saint Pachomius in the fourth century as an aid for illiterate monks to accomplish a consistent number of prayers and prostrations. Monks were often expected to carry a prayer rope almost constantly, to remind them to pray constantly in accordance with Saint Paul's injunction in I Thessalonians 5:17, "Pray without ceasing."

In some Russian Orthodox service books, certain liturgies can be replaced at need by praying the Jesus Prayer a specified number of times, anywhere from 300 to 1,500 times depending on the service being replaced. In this way prayers can still be said even if the service books are unavailable for some reason. The use of a prayer rope is a very practical tool in such cases, simply for keeping count of the prayers said.

Is this accurate? What role does the prayer rope play in your life? Cheers :)

What role does the prayer rope play in your life?

It helps me concentrate when I say prayers. I'm very fidgety, so it keeps my hands busy. I have one with 33 knots that goes on my wrist, so any time I find myself needing to pray, I've got it with me.

Also, like the an illiterate monk, I lose count easily. The prayer rope helps :)

As for the being able to really pray the Jesus Prayer without distraction and truly make it the prayer of my heart, I've got a loooooooooooooooooong way to go.....

Tom,
Yes, wikapedia actually has something that's basically correct!
Like Moses the black, I also have a fifty knot that I keep, typically attached to my belt loop. It does in fact serve as a reminder that we should pray constantly.
As moses has already stated so well, I too have a looooooooooooong way to go towards unceasing prayer of the heart.
If you are interested in knowing more about the Jesus prayer, I heartily recommend the book, The Way of a Pilgrim (http://facultyofchristianity.com/0060630175.html) A quick and most powerful read.
His unworthy servant,
Eusebios.
