You guys need to read the account of the Pascah Vigil held by the Eastern Orthodox Church. The highlight is on Saturday after sundown before Easter Sunday. It involves sharing of flame.
Sounds a lot like Havdalah! Perhaps it is a vestigal nod to the idea that the resurrection events happened Saturday after sundown, near the time of havdalah.
