Father Demetrius fell asleep
in the Lord around five o'clock in the morning today, 28 June 2004, after a prolonged illness, at age 83. His funeral services will take place on 30 June 2004.
Father Demetrius suffered much for his faith in Christ, service to the Church and efforts to spread the Gospel under a social and political order intent on wiping out all religion. He was arrested and imprisoned numerous times, and endured harrassment and mistreatment even when at a rather precarious liberty. Among his writings, one of the best known is Our Hope (published in English in the United States by Saint Vladimir Seminary Press in 1977), a collection of sermons directed at rank-and-file believers and curious inquirers in an inventive question-and-answer format, by which he tried to circumvent government restrictions on religious education.
May the Lord God remember the priesthood of His newly-departed servant, the presbyter Demetrius, in His heavenly kingdom. Eternal memory!
