View Full Version : Cousins! & Leviticus 18

As far as I could find from the website Ellen White doesn't comment on it.
The bible/God appear to be ok with it.
And the law of the land doesn't have a problem with it.
But...
What do we as Seventh Day Adventists have to say about cousins marrying one another?

Well--Abraham married his half-sister. And if you think about Adam and Eve were siblings--lol.
I've heard of many cousins marrying. Is this where the saying of "Kissing Cousins" came about?
My only concern is that there could be a problem with the offspring. Mainly hemophilia.

My cousins are very unattractive so that's RIGHT OUT!
haha...just kidding.
Isn't it against the law of the land for first cousins to marry?
I know second and third cousins marry sometimes, but I believe that there is a high medical probability of retardation if two first cousins have offspring together.
Let me go look that up.
Good question!

Interesting stuff there.
24 states ban marriage between first cousins, but the other 26 do not.

Yep, high risk of hemophilia. But I was wrong about retardation.

I always thought it was illegal in all the states to marry a first cousin.
Guess I was wrong.

Hence the name 'blue-bloods' amongst the 'royals' in medieval Europe, from inter-marrying too often.

Adam and Eve and the people way back through the generations had purer blood than we do now, I suppose.

it's certainly legal here in the UK and I think most everywhere else too. (according to that site!)

It's odd that half our country has made it against civil law. Not that long ago we had to get blood tests before we could get married too, but I don't think that's a requirement anymore.
I was reading through Leviticus 18 and it doesn't look like it's spoken against.

And they didn't have as much choice I suppose!

LOL...true.
Gives new meaning to the phrase "I wouldn't, even if you were the last person on earth!" huh?

So......am I the only one that's curious why she asked this question? :)

Haha...
I went on holiday and met a guy at church who I thought was the cutest thing I'd seen in as long as I can remember.
And we flirted with our eyes until service was over and he asked someone about me and they said, "don't you remember her? she's your cousin"
But we are both Adventist and thought it was incest so closed the chapter!!
Now we're back in our respective countries (and with access to the www) we're finding that it isn't incest at all... but it's just ONLY our friends/family/society/church...(and the list goes on) that would be against it! lol

I don't know how old you are, but having friends/family/society/church against it made ME want to do something even more as a young adult.
Did I say that out loud?
What do your parents say? And how close of a cousin is he to you? (Not judging, just really curious).

Our feelings for each other are reciprocated, but our desires to consider a future together is certainly not.
He's my first cousin and he's not going to be convinced that God is happy with it. So there is no future in it.
I just wondered what everyone else thought.

So... should I be hung, drawn and quartered or what??

I'm 30, so not such a young adult anymore and he's 28 and the biggest chicken ever! lol
I'm still a little bit wild and crazy and willing to consider something that's a little taboo as long as it's cool with God!
Afterall, I go to church on a Saturday and the rest of the world think I'm bonkers! :o)

You went straight to the Source to find out if this was acceptable to God, so who are WE to say any different? Seriously?
It's "different" yes, but it's happened throughout the ages and our perception of different now isn't the same as what it was say...20 years ago.
Nobody here has any right to judge you for anything, least of all me.

No problems here, besides the obvious health issues. Love strikes very unexpectedly sometimes. I'm currently in a relationship with someone 6 years my junior, but it's amazing. Not that I'd tell people to hunt down romances outside of social norms, but if it works, it works.

My husband is younger than I am.
3 whole months younger.
He thinks it's funny, 3 months of the year, to call me his "old lady". I find myself unable to cook and clean as much during those three months!

I certainly did look it up.
Imagining fancying the pants off someone and then finding out your feeling are incestuous!!:swoon::sick:
I went straight to The Word and although I'm pleased that my feelings aren't illegal or sinful, I'm still disappointed that he couldn't be the boy from next door coz that would make life a whole lot easier and make for a possible future.:sigh:

If you'll allow me to comment on here, one interesting thing I found out during my last deployment is that in the Arab world, first cousins are the first candidate for marriage. When a child reaches marrying age, the parents will see if any of their siblings have children of marrying age. If no first cousin is available, a second cousin will do. If no second cousin, a third. Only as a last resort do the Arabs marry outside the family, and that can be tricky to negotiate because it is really a mariage between the families.
