WJ recentley PMed me asking me to join this order. I have read over the thread and I like what I see. A group of Christians on a Christian website joining together to spread the morals of Christ. I am happy to call myself one of you.
Now a little about myself... My name is Ben. I am a leader of a witnessing group at my school, and I am about to take a lead role in my youth group at my Church. While I proudly bear the UMC icon I am also known to attend a Non-Denominational Church (in addition to two methodist ones). I first accepted Christ into my life two years ago (my freshman year in High school). As soon as I finnish up high school I'm going down to Hawaii to attend Youth With a Mission's Decipleship Training School (DTS). After DTS I will do as the Spirit leads me, but right now I am feeling a calling to missionary work. I spend my free time at my Church or writing literature for new Christians (specific to each person). I can't think of anything else...
I might be a little strange in doing this, but I am going to assign myself a verse for the order. The verse will appear in my signature until I either leave the order, or leave CF... the verse is
Romans 13:12
The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

Clement--
Welcome. Don't think of yourself a sthe "token Reformed Methodist" We're all family here! (altho' I have the distinction of being labeled the "rebel Methodist" at the non-denom we attend ^_^ )
On another note--I have noticed an interesting thing since I got my candle. I seem to take more time to think and answer in a more loving manner to posts in other parts of the forum lately. Kinda neat, and sometimes hard, to get my point across without ticking anyone off. But it seems to be getting easier!

Thanks Celtie. I am beginning to think of myself not as a "reformed Methodist," but a Whitfield Methodist...very appropriate I think! As for posting, I try to be a kinder, gentler CF poster. I try to be level headed and logical and I tend to walk away from idiocy rather than flame the fires. I am glad to be here among the kinder, gentler posters. ;)

Greetings, fellow members of the Order! :) I have a couple of questions.
Did we ever find out from Erwin what he thinks of us copying the items he's selling for blessings of the board?
I know initially the Order was primarily made up of fellow Wesleyan-types. Others were honorary members. I'm not sure if we did that because it was a bonding/encouraging thing that we could do together, or if it was because the number of candles was initially so limited and we wanted to be sure we had everyone covered before we opened it up. Could someone clarify this, please. Good Sir Knight? ;)
Hugs to all of you! Special hug to Piano Player for being so encouraging over in the Politics forum!

Is "Boys' Brigade" part of "Christian Service Brigade"?I'd never heard of the Christian Service Brigade before, so I did a quick bit of research. I don't think there are any official links between the two organisations, but there are definite similarities in the work they do and the way they work. We've just got back from camp with our younger kids. We're taking the older group away in August.
I'm just into my third year running the group at our Church. It's good fun. Good excuse to be a kid again for a while. :D

Greetings fellow Candlers!
Grace and Peace to you in the Name of Christ Jesus our Lord!
I have just returned from a two-day quest to visit a young (7-yr-old) boy who was in one of the best Children's Hospitals in all of the world for a procedure. He attends my church. This is the second of three major procedures, which require full anesthesia. He will return in 2 months for the third procedure which will also involve surgery on his knee. Please pray for Tommy.
I see that we have grown. I also am encouraged by those who already recognize a great deal of thought and editing before pressing the "Reply" button. Let us do all we can to promote peace and unity in these parts.
Thank you to those who are tracking our membership, collecting candles, and inducting members. Please continue to seek out members for our High Order.

Shine
By The Newsboys
dull as dirt
you canīt assert the kind of light
that might persuade
a strict dictator to retire
fire the army
teach the poor origami
the truth is in
the proof is when
you hear your heart start asking,
"Whatīs my motivation?"
and try as you may, there isnīt a way
to explain the kind of change
that would make an Eskimo renounce fur
that would make a vegetarian barbecue hamster
unless you can trace this about-face
to a certain sign...
Chorus
shine
make īem wonder what youīve got
make īem wish that they were not
on the outside looking bored
shine
let it shine before all men
letīem see good works, and then
let īem glorify the Lord
out of the shaker and onto the plate
it isnīt Karma
it sure ainīt fate
that would make a Deadhead sell his van
that would make a schizophrenic turn in his crayons
Oprah freaks
and science seeks a rationale
that shall excuse
this strange behavior
when you let it shine
you will inspire
the kind of entire turnaround
that would make a bouncer take ballet

but out of the glare
with nowhere to turn
you ainīt gonna learn it on "Whatīs My Line?"

Just wondering how the passage can be applied in an online context.

Why not follow what we do in life: love our enemies and forgive them. If some one is acting especially tafferish, I am sure we could gather a couple of brutes to offer some "re-education" for the offending individuals. :D

A couple of brutes?? I think I'd rather just back away so I don't say something I would regret later. If I have lovingly made my point, and someone still gets nasty in their disagreement with me I tell them their opinion is their own then exit the conversation. Then I sit back and pray for them to be shown a nicer way of dealing with people and for me to put any hurt feelings I may have suffered in the past and forgive the offender.

"tafferish"? :D
My Upper Room devotion the other morning had some good thoughts on this, some I admit that I need work on. Our job on earth is to be witness' for Jesus. We are to share the Good News and what Jesus means to us and what he has done in our lives with others. The Holy Spirit is with us to help us accomplish this. We are not someone's final judge and jury on their salvation. It is my responsiblity to go to them out of concern and talk with them if I see they are out of step with how Jesus has called us to live and if necessary to involve my other brothers and sisters in Christ if I need help. All this is done in a loving manner, not in an accusatory tone. I think we should be concerned if one of our family is falling away. But, it is not my role to judge their heart. Their fruit I can certainly bear witness too, but their heart is between them and God. However, I will say that in a lot of instances the fruit we bear is a good indication of the condition of our hearts.

Celtie - I was being a facetious about the "brutes" comment. In all honesty, I have a simple rule that I follow in regards to difference of opinion or belief. I do my thing, you do yours. While it is sometimes difficult, I will do my best to show you the love and respect you deserve. Despite my comment, (just Joshing around) I certainly would never advocate a couple of brutes to "re-educate" some one choosing not to believe what I believe.
wvmtnkid - that is the second time I have used to the word, "taffer" without thinking ahead. ^_^
Taffer is a made up word for a game called, "Thief." It was derived from a Mother Goose nursery rhyme that contains the line(s), "Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief." I am guessing "taffy" is a slang name for a Welshman. It it suggested that "taffer" is a dilution of "trickster", much like in modern English "darn" is a dilution of "damn", and "heck" is a dilution of "hell."
It is word that is use synonymously to describe something. For example, I was acting tafferish (trickster, goofball) when I jokingly posted the comment about the brutes. When I used the word, it was used to mean some one acting out. However, because word did derive from a game called Thief, most people think it refers to a thief and use it accordingly.
You mentioned the devotional from today's Upper Room. By any chance, you would not happen to have a link to read on-line, would you?

Gaberlunzie, rogue, moocher, gangrel, dommerer and probably taffer to name a few. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_1_200.gif

Ok, I wasn't sure if I had offended you or if you took it as a joke. ^_^
That is pretty funny about the meaning of your husband's last name. I have had genealogical searches done on my last name, Peniza, though it appears my ancestors just showed up one day. No real meaning from what I could find. I should mention based on the research I did for Kokopelli, he was also believe to be "trickster" in addition to being a joy bringer. I figured since my easy going personality can sometimes bring joy and my tafferish nature to get a rise out of people, (e.g. tossing some juicy "bait" in a political forum to get a rise, though I only do it in an open thread as not to troll) this should be a perfect username. ^_^

Welcome Christi! I agree with Allye (so what else is new ;) ): I can't think of anyone who posts with such love for God and graciousness toward your fellow members. :)
I've been thinking a lot about WJ's suggestion of looking at Matthew 18 in light of being part of an online forum. I think online communication makes it harder to treat someone with love and forgiveness. Out here in real life (RL), we form our opinons of people based on personal contact. We see the expressions on their faces, their body language, the look in their eyes, the tone in their voices, etc. Their words are not isolated, they are only a part of total communication, and part of a fuller experience of relationship with the person.
But here online, all we have are words--and sometimes emoticons. But even together, they can't come near the experience of face-to-face, voice-to-voice, real time interaction with a person. So if words are all we really get, we end up basing our impressions of someone strictly on those. We have no idea what prompts them. Someone may seem pushy, arrogant, rude, belligerent--and what they may really be is scared, or reacting to something that happened in their world that day, or there could be any number of other reasons behind their words. But if that happens a few times with someone, we've formed an impression of them. It may or may not have any basis in reality, but we assume it's true because we have nothing else with which to compare it.
It seems like that can make forgiveness harder. If I know someone was a total grump because they've just been hung out to dry at work today, then it's easier for me to extend some grace and forgive them if they snap at me. But if they post rudely and I don't know there's a reason behind it, I'm more likely to add that little tick mark under the "Things that make this guy a jerk" column. Online relationships force us to truly have to forgive because God forgave us first, rather than forgive because we understand the reason for the offence. It's harder. Maybe it's a more real sort of forgiveness, though.

3rd August 2004, 08:56 PM
Hey WJ! I like the idea of talking together about how God would have us relate to and serve one another here online. We should be encouraging each other here in the Order. But this thread is getting awfully long. What do you think about starting a series of threads--maybe one per scripture passage--so we could always look in on them when we need a lift about a particular subject. We could call them something like, "Candlelight Meditation on Forgiveness - Matthew 18". Just a thought. :)

Auction Alert!
Nicholas has a candle up for auction. I would have bid on it, but I didn't want to be the auction hog! :D
Really good thoughts elanor! Being a mod, sometimes I have a little trouble extending grace some days. Something I have learned is not to respond right away to a post or PM that pushes my buttons. Sometimes it's better for me to leave it be for a little while and then come back and respond when my emotions aren't flyin' all over the place and I have had a chance to formulate my thoughts into a thought out answer, not one that is off my cuff based on "I can't believe they just said that! Are they from Jupiter or something????".
Or it might be that annoying habit that got me inducted in PA that makes me reply later instead.....:D

Oh, that PA thing!! I forgot again to PM Erwin. :D Okay, I'm going to do that as soon as I finish this post. If I haven't forgotten by the time I press Submit. :o
Good advice, kid. :) I usually do wait before I post when someone makes me angry--not so much because I think it's the wise thing to do, but usually because when I'm irritated I tend to splutter out words and what I'm trying to say doesn't come out right. I have to step back to formulate my thoughts.
Just out of couriosity, what is with the "...you must spread some reputation around before giving it to elanor again..." that has been posted a few times? kokopelli, the way the reputation system works, once you rep someone you have to rep 19 or 20 other people before you can rep that same person again. If you try to rep the person too soon, you get a message like the one Allye posted. Just encourages you to look for the good all around you and let people know when they've posted something worthwhile by repping them. :)

Okay, ya'll, here's Erwin's reply about the candles in the sigs:
Mmm... :) Quite a smart thing to do actually. LOL! Never thought of that! There are no rules against this, so I won't say no. :) I may prevent this by coding in the future (maybe) if this method defeats the purpose of having an Armor of God section, but in the meantime, I will allow it. I do suggest using a different candle though, as if everyone starts doing this, then there is no point having an Armor of God section. :)
Does anyone have a different candle people could use in their sigs?

The available in the armor section is a lot smaller and holds more importance due to it's limited availability. Though I have been using the one I borrowed from the SmileyCentral utility for my sig. ^_^

I hope u like her, she's caled abby and she is a puppy chiuahaha, her mother is lady and although she looks like she's laughing, she takes her role of motherhood very very seriously. this miracle just reminds me all the time that God gave us our feet and hands and hearts to use for good,

That is a cute puppy. I remember when my wife and I were looking to "expand" our small family by adding a canine friend, one of the dogs we looked at was a Chihuahua. However, we settled on a shepherd-chow mix that turned out to be pretty good dog. Plus, he is very good with our daughter. :)

I'm here, I'm here!
I have been on another quest! This quest involved leading 75 teenagers from my state in a wonderfully blessed "Teen Camp" experience where we explored what it meant to be part of "The Body." Following that quest, I went on another quest with my wonderful wife to go camping in Acadia National Park, climb high mountains, bike on carriage roads, and ride in a horsedrawn carriage at sunset.
Both quests were wonderful. It looks like all is well here in WP, and I'm busy catching up on things. Sorry to not let you all know that I was going away, but I didn't want to alert any wolves that the shepherd was on vacation... :D

As WesleyJohn said, you are absolutely welcomed! Wesley's Parish is open to any denomination who claim John Wesley as a founder. (I hope I stated that correctly!) Acutally, there are many others who come in and fellowship with us and we are glad that they do. One of our biggest questions seems to be "What's the difference between United and Free Methodists?" I think we may need to set up some FAQ's and put that one in there!

...
hmmm. . . . interesting question. A partial history lesson from Websters-Dictionery.org talks about the origins of Wesley's churches in the US.
"The United Methodist Church was formed in 1968 as a result of a merger between the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist Church. The former church had resulted from mergers of several groups of German Methodist heritage.. . . . . .
In addition to the United Methodist Church, there are over 40 other denominations that descend from John Wesley's Methodist movement. Some, such as the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Free Methodists and the Wesleyan Church (formerly Wesleyan Methodist), are explicitly Methodist. Others do not call themselves Methodist, but are related to varying degrees. The Salvation Army was founded by William Booth, a former Methodist. It derives some of its theology from Methodism. Another related denomination is the Church of the Nazarene. Some of the charismatic or pentecostal churches such as the Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Assemblies of God also have roots in or draw from Wesleyan thought.. . In Canada, the Methodist Church merged with the Presbyterian Church and a number of other groups to form the United Church of Canada.
Sooooo. . . apparently, the main difference is the name on the side of the building, although I found one reference by a Free Methodist claiming Frees stick more closely to Wesley's principles. As Wesley himself said in his sermon entitled The Catholic Spirit "But although a difference in opinions or modes of worship may prevent an entire external union, yet need it prevent our union in affection? Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? Without all doubt, we may. Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding these smaller differences. These remaining as they are, they may forward one another in love and in good works. "

I pray for our dear friend, Christi. That you will surround her with your loving presence. Father, you know her spirit and her heart that overflows with love for you. I pray in the time that she needs your protection she will know that it surrounds her. Lord, I pray the words of Psalm 61 for Christi.
Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings.
Give her protection and comfort, Oh Lord. Help her feel our prayers and love. You promise us that when two or more are gathered in your name, you are with us also. We ask this in your name. Amen

I would think that Copyright music is protected by international copyright.
In answer to the question, no...I am not joining the ranks of the pirates. I am, however, going to probably create some mix CDs for the car (from the music that I already own), and may purchase some digital tracks or albums from time to time.
I purchased a Dell. I tend to find that they are one of the best values for the money, as long as you don't need to call tech support!

I have several CDs made of music purchased off iTunes. I am even starting a small collection of Christian music to eventually put into a CD.
I have heard a lot of good things about Dells. But their tech support is outsourced overseas, so it is my understanding that it is something to be desired.
WesleyJohn
2nd September 2004, 05:07 PM
What is iTune's pricing structure?
I like the computer, but you're right about tech support. It often does leave much to be desired.
One of the other things I will be able to do with the CD burner is digital photos. I'm our District (state) Youth President in the denomination, and I often take pictures at our youth events. It will be nice to be able to burn those to a CD and give them to the event directors or some of the students.

3rd September 2004, 07:03 AM
The pricing structure varies for iTunes. The songs are $0.99/piece with full cds ranging between $9.99 - $15.00. The higher prices are usually for the newer CDs that require each song to be purchased seperately. The good this with this, is that it allows you to preview a good minute of the song to determine whether you wish to purchase it.
and to answer your last question, overnight does have a valid point. :D

It will be nice to be able to burn those to a CD and give them to the event directors or some of the students.
Grace and Peace,
WJ
PS. Does any of this have anything to do with candles???
What an awesome idea! I do that often with the kids I mentor - - never thought of burning a cd of the photos. I usually make extra prints.
Thanks WJ - and YES! sharing is ALWAYS a part of spreading God's (candle) light!

Taking a CF break before my poor little sputtering candle flame is completely extinguished. :( Would like to keep it - and hopefully return with it refreshed and shining brightly, if that's kosher?
Will still be around to check PMs :)

So far so good! My sis had TWO pines fall on top of her home, crunching in the roof (right over the teen daughters' rooms! yuck!). .. I found the windows aren't sealed against 95mph rain ^_^ . . . . and that my office bldg roof leaks. Discovery time! I was without power for 23.5 hrs but some folks are STILL w/out power today! I am sooooo blessed!
No one is removing the boards from their windows - after all, Ivan's on his way. Can we go for the eyes of THREE storms in one year cut thru?? A new record! WoooooHOOOOO!
