Name: Church of the Nazarene

Founder: Phineas Bresee

Date of Birth: December 31, 1838; Died Novemeber 13, 1915

Birth Place: Franklin, New York

Year Founded: 1908 Pilot Point, Texas

History: The Church of the Nazarene is part of the Holiness Movement which has its origin in the Methodist concern with perfectionism. The Holiness Movement grew rapidly among Methodists following the Civil War. As the nineteenth century drew to a close, schism beset the movement and many new denominations were formed (Melton,76-77).

II. Beliefs of the Group
The Church of the Nazarene uses Wesleyan-Arminian theological doctrine and practices as its basis.

Oh, Bigsierra! We also schismed over abolition earlier. :(
Afterward the North and South branchs of the MEC reunified, but we lost many of our black Methodists in the process, who formed the AMFC and the CMEC. That's the most shameful part of our history, in my not-so-humble opinion.
I would like to know if your church had similar problems in America, but it doesn't seem like polite question to ask in OBOB, to say the least. :sigh:

I'm having loads of fun getting to know our Nazarene brothers and sisters; I've never had the opportunity before. :)
Bigsierra has answered your question so beautifully that all I can think of to add is "Insofar as Wesley founded any of us", since we all just sorta happened, rather than his founding us on purpose.

I don't know much about that part of the history just yet. I'm not fully Catholic at this point. I think the Catholic Church has quite a few difficult things in her history. Btw, I just changed my icon, so folks would know what theological paradigm I'm coming from. I was going to keep the Christian cross as my icon till Easter, when I am planning on becoming a member. I didn't want it to be misinterpreted in other Congregational areas, and have people saying "oh he's secretly a papist" or something like that.

I grew up in the Church of the Nazarene though, so I know a bit about it. My parents and my sister and her husband still go to that church.

I think you could ask anything you wanted in OBOB. Everything you bring up is draped in grace and no one would take it in a wrong way. Well, I guess someone could, but they certainly shouldn't.
