Well, it's late and I can't sleep(clown will eat me!) because I'm coming down with a cold. I probably caught it from Zemmy! Thanks Zemmy!^_^
Anyway since I bombed my last poll, I figured I'd redue it.
Just ignore the other one, it will eventually disappear into the pile of forgotten threads. I'm pretty sure I covered all the "labels" this time so enjoy!
Oh and the search finally worked and I found the thread I was looking for:
http://www.christianforums.co.uk/t60336&page=1
Very informative!
Page 8 has an entertaining link to yafet's thread. I had no idea he was so outgoing!:)

Huh?..For some reason, many of you posts just go over my head man! ...Wait is that Solo- scriptural- judaism. Yeah I know that much about it, I've been reading a lot on it. Karaism fits a lot more with my beliefs, but I still don't know how to say it, my dictionary discribes it differently then you have said before. sola scriptura is a Greek declaration made by the protestants. Instead of basing theology off of what an individual (the pope) says, or off of tradition, they based theology soley off of scriptural principles. Thadman is making a play on words by making it sola scriptura Judaism, basically stating that he rejects Jewish traditions, halacha, etc.
The funny thing about Nehemiah Gordon (often seen as the leader of the movement, though technically there isn't one), and people like him, is that they do in fact make halacha, but out of the other side of their mouth they state halacha is evil. To me, the majority of Karaites are hypocritical in that nature.... creating their own halacha while 'rejecting all' of halacha.
just my 2 cents.

Sola scriptura was really it's Protestant moniker, but the principle has been around a long time before the Protestant movement within Karaism. Other than that point, you've pretty much hit the nail on the head akhi. :)

I love you, too Yafet ;)
Nehemiah Gordon is the "leader" of the "World Karaite Movement," but is strictly anti-Messianic. Here's a sample of some email correspondence I've had with him as of late:
Shalom Steve,
I am responding to your querry.* I think I understand where you are coming from and I welcome a dialogue.* However, I want to make it clear that Karaites do not believe in Jesus or Yeshua.* Of course, we believe he existed and some such as myself even think he was a righteous man who pointed people to Torah.* However, we do not look to him as a Messiah or even a prophet.* If you can respect that this is a basic Karaite appraisal of the man, we can dialogue.* If you wish to re-define Karaism as a branch of Messianism or even to speak of Karaite Messianics (like Muslim Christians), then please do not waste my time.*
Nehemia
Seeing that I'm not going to get any help from him I've been setting up a Messianic Karaite website that will deal with the various issues in Karaism under a Messianic light.
http://www.AramaicNT.org/MessianicKaraites
When it comes to halacha, it is all a matter of semantics. To put things bluntly, Karaism rejects rabbinic traditions and believes that all practices should stem directly from scripture, not "scriptural principles" or the "sayings of the fathers," and leaves all interpretations up to the same scrutiny.
This does, as a result, allow for diversity of opinion, but we believe that it -should- be that way. Where Rabbinicism believes that there is a set definition of work on the Sabbath, a Karaite would simply say, "Don't work on the Sabbath! That's all God says!" because, face it: If an 8-year-old math whiz were to be doing math problems on a Friday night for recreation, he's not working. If I, someone who despises math, were to do the same, it would be drudgery! :)
In the end, we're all accountable to God and he knows the motives in our heart, so it's best not to "walk on the wild side" and simply do what he wants: Rest on the Sabbath. :)
Peace!

bah...i did say 'majority' ;)
Quite seriously, Nehemiah Gordon does create halacha. For example, he is strictly against having a fire on shabbat, but he declares assuredly that a pilot light on a furnace is ok. Seems by all standards, that this is a halachic decision. But then he will tell you halacha is evil.
*shrug*
This is one example of many that I could use.
The thing that started Karaite views is the corruption of halacha. I do believe that particular halachic decisions need review, but I do not deny the need for halacha. Halacha was intended to help us follow the torah as a community.
I would continue, but this is an obvious rabbit trail that should probably continue elsewhere.

OK for those of you who want to be Pastor George
Go out and abuse your body for years and years with drugs and alcohol
No fair stopping untill you are down to your last 2 brain cells.
It will speed the process if you have a violent temper and get into
a lot of fights.
When you are all done fall down and weep at the feet of Y'shua and become so desperate to be in the presence of Ha'Shem that nothing else matters in the least bit. Don't be dignified or think anything of yourself because once you have been before the Holy creator of the universe you will realize just how insignificant you are.
Thats all it takes
Oh and you need a cruddy old rusting pick up truck too

of course, now that I think about it... people call me lots of things...
but most of which I can't say in here
lol.. I can relate!!
Hmmm, I wonder why I seem to be the only one that doesn't have a problem with the term "christian". It's just not a big deal to me. I believe Yeshua was the messiah and died for my sins, doesn't that make me a christian. To many people (includeing athiests) relate christianity to those screaming preachers on TV and to the hypocrisy involed in it. To me that's not real christianity. Christianity should be the religion of Yeshua along with the belief that He is the messiah. I don't think it's a different religion than judaism, I think it is the fulfilment of judaism. But it seems I'm the only one that beleives that. Oh well, to each his own right?!
Sephania
21st June 2004, 01:32 PM
Messianic and Christian are separate in the language.
Christian is the english for the greek I believe
Messianic is taken from Messiah the english for Moshiach the Hebrew for annointed one.
But Christianity and Messianic Judaism denote something else. On the whole of religions you may be classified as a Chrisitan but within the body, Messianic because that means that you don't believe that the law was done away with, but do believe the Sabbath is still on Friday evening to saturday evening ( the 7th day) and that Yeshua didn't nor did Kefas vision tell us that we can now go eat shrimp wrapped in bacon with a side of blood pudding!
Now we could take that a little further to distinquish and call what we study and follow of the living word, His way, "Moshiachism". :)
Basicially the way I think of myself is a "Peculiar outcast". :) And THAT wasn't on the poll.
brentsbaby612
21st June 2004, 01:55 PM
Exactly. I don't really care what others call me. It seems important to others to be able to label me, so I let them
I only care about what my Father calls me... and He calls me His child.
Hey I did the label thing mostly for fun!:D Nothing serious. I never said I was tiring to "label" anyone.
I just get so sick and tired of people asking "Ok, what are you again". I guess what i'm getting at is that i like to just say "I'm christian, that's all you need to know". Since we(me and my DH)beleive this (messianic) as being what true christianity is, what it should have always been, without the influence of constanitine and catholism. Call yourself what you like, I don't care. I just want to know why everyone hates the term "christian" so much. That's all.;)
Yeshua didn't nor did Kefas vision tell us that we can now go eat shrimp wrapped in bacon with a side of blood pudding!

For those who wouldn't touch a chickens liver with a 10 foot pole
Mock Chopped Liver (String Bean Vegetarian Pate)
Original source: DAILY FORWARD
3 large onions, chopped
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups green beans, cooked and drained
1 3/4 cups green peas, cooked and drained
3 hard boiled eggs
20 Tam Tams or other salty crackers
salt and pepper to taste
Saute the onions in the oil over very low heat for 20 minutes until
limp, translucent and golden. (Do not rush this step.)
Combine the sauteed onions with the remaining ingredients in a food
processor. Grind until well processed. Season with salt and pepper.
Note: This recipe was a favorite of the Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis
Singer.
