View Full Version : Remembering our first answered prayer.

I thought this would be a good place to thank the Lord publically for the first prayer He answered in your life.

I was 4 years old at the time and living in Panama (Central America). My dad had been stationed there on a Marine base. Every weekend we would take trips all over to see and experience the culture. One of the things that always fascinated me were the myriad of crucifixes that I would see hanging on walls, or around peoples necks. My best friend even had a cross necklace! But not I.

So one morning I approached my mom and asked her if we could go shopping for one. She merely chuckled over it and said "If God wants you to have one, He would give you one Himself. So why don't you just pray to Him and ask Him for one." So I marched into my room, got on my knees in front of my bed, and asked the Lord for a cross!

My parents belonged to an exotic fish club, where the members would go out to the rivers and streams and catch colorful looking fish and display them in fish tanks. Their group had an expedition planned for July 4th (in fact my parents filmed the excursion--which is before camcorders were invented). We went to this one river/streambed where the water was very clear, and colder than a winters day. It was about a foot and a half deep. With my mask and snorkel, I drifted face down being carried by the gentle current. The bottom of the stream had smooth stones. As I was drifiting downstream, a shiny object caught my eye! This area of Panama was famous for Pirates centuries before, so I thought it could be some long lost treasure! As I backed up and peered down I saw a silver cross, it was inlaid with turqouise. Snatching it up I went to the shore to inspect it. It had once been a crucifix, but the Corpus was missing. But however you look at it, the Lord had answered the simple prayer of a young boy. Indeed, I had found a great treasure that day! To this day I thank God for such a small, but effective blessing.

PTL! And what great faith to have at such a young age!

I'm going to have to think about my first one and get back to you.

Thank you. The reason I posted this was to get us thinking about how the Lord has answered our prayers in very tangible ways. I find that child like faith is a must in ones prayer life. Once we get 'older' in the faith it begins to get too rational and we often dismiss these answers from the Lord as being coincidental. However, the largest answer I've ever received on a personal level from the Lord can be found in my blog (hint, hint).

Hint, hint... ^_^

Being somewhat still new to faith, I guess mine was from years ago. Graduating high school with a child already I needed a job. I settled for a crummy, measley job. 13 years later I'm still there and have been promoted each year at least once, they work with me when I want/need breaks going from full time to part time to nothing, etc.

So what started out as a "settle for this" job I had no idea would really be extremely beneficial to me. I have learned so much and have grown incredibly in all areas from it.

What I thought was an unanswered prayer really was answered. It just wasn't answered how *I* thought was best. But in the end, it absolutely was the best thing for me.

Thanks for sharing that. Well, I've decided to share with you the second half of my story, so here it is;

Several years later (I was 11 I think) I had a friend who was very poor. He and I would discuss the Bible, God, and Prayer together. SInce I used to carry that cross with me everywhere, and we were discussing how the Lord answers prayer, I told him essentially what I said in this post.

His eyes widened when he saw the cross that the Lord had given me. As we were discussing some of the passages in the bible, I had an impression--It is more blessed to give than to receive. So I acted on that, especially since he said he wished he had a cross to help him pray. SInce he was poor, and since the Lord was loving and gracious, I decided to give it to him. He teared up, and wouldn't stop thanking me.

Today, I sometimes wished that I still had it. Yet I realize, that cross has passed through several hands, the least of which were mine.

Very nice Kirkhaven! You know one truly, truly is more blessed when giving than receiving.

Can't remember the first prayer ever answered and honestly don't know. But could recount several instances of answered prayer during its lifetime, from the trivial to the important. One thing to keep in mind bes the constant change and flux nature of life day to day. What answers this time might not necessarily be a permanent thing and in time one might need to pray again over the same matter, or might lose what one received as an answer. For example if you'd lost that cross necklace while outside playing, you would be disappointed at the loss but it would not mean God had not answered that prayer at all.

What an awesome thread. Mines somewhat embarrassing. Awe what the heck I was just a kid. My brother, sister, and I used to love to listen to the KC Kasum top 40 countdown on Sunday mornings. It was timd perfectly, that when church got out they would just start the top ten songs. One Sunday, when I was about 5, the family was running late, so our parents took us to another church for service, which was an hour later. So we thought for sure we're going to miss the top ten. I poured my heart out the best a 5 year old could, especially given the ridiculous subject. When the later church got out. You guessed it. KC was just starting the top ten. It seems the radio station had a malfunction and had to start an hour later.

I know its ridiculous...:blush: I was 5..
