View Full Version : Where Are The Techs??
Tiffanya

It appears that CF is flooded by "bugs"? So many members reporting these so called "bugs" day in and day out, only to get a response such as: "It happens to me too" or "it works fine for me".
I understand that mods, supervisors are not terchs and just reply to posts - so where are the techs?
I am almost certain that features not working are NOT due to "bugs" but more to the way they are set out (wrong).
Sorry for "butting in", but it is very frustrating to have to put up with features that don't work and nobody seems to be doing anything to rectify them.
End of what I had to say :swoon: :sigh:

It can be frustrating to say the least.
I came across an announcement of sorts somewhere here that CF is going to new software and servers soon.
That may be part of the issues lately.
I'll see if I can locate it again.

If nothing else, maybe pm mnphysicist ??
He might be able to answer your questions.
To be honest, I have been having problems myself.
I think once the new software and servers are switched, Things will be much better.

CF will be upgrading to a newer version of Vbulletin soon. This likely will result in CF being offline for a bit, sometime within the next couple weeks or so. When I know the timing in greater precision, I'll let folks know.
Apart from the core software upgrade, many new and cool features will be implemented. No doubt there will be a few bugs as we go live, and a number of things will seem strange. However, overall, the new version is much much nicer, and easier to use. It also reduces the strain on the servers substantially.
A few things:
1. CF characters stay, although upgrades in functionality will occur down the road a bit.
2. CF pets will be quite different, although it appears the underlying database will remain. Not completely sure.
3. The guestbooks and profiles are way different, and much more powerful than the current ones.
4. The navigation will be changing to hopefully make it easier for new members.
5. Skins and color schemes will be changing.
6. Major updates to CF radio and internet TV will likely be a new feature

the delay is this...
the current version we are using is so outdated and most of the "features" taht were added by the former owner of the site were nothing more than ameteur hacks on the software...
this has made the code not only bulky but server intense...
With the change of owners, and report policies, and staff changes and and and and
the hacked code is so bulky that the pros we have for techs now are just shaking their heads...
the new owner has gone to great expense to purchase the *latest* version of VB and some truly *awesome* features addons for both members and staff.
But, as will all bugets....we must choose...
do we want to "fix" the current issues?
or
do we want to solve the problem of "hacked" software and do a complete upgrade?
Personally, I'm willing to tolerate a few more bugs for a while to get the upgrade.

Thanks a lot for your explanation. I would personally put up a post, and let members know that you are all aware of the many bugs. Also let them know that it is pointless fixing anything as there will soon be an upgrade with new features etc.....
Good luck with it all, will be praying for a smooth change over when it happens - and when will that be? ;)

It would have been so nice if this was explained by the owner to all of us months ago. For months now there have been tons of bugs and nobody doing anything and it has been frustrating and has appeared that nobody cared. All the threads in bug reports have never been responded to by techs or the owner. The bug report forum should have been closed down months ago if they were going to just wait to do anything for months. Thanks so much for FINALLY explaining this situation..how hard would it have been for someone to explain it months ago ???

I work this forum religiously and half the bugs people report are one time instances. There is only one tech that is paid on Christian Forums and he does a lot of other forums, he doesn't have the time to post in the Report Bugs Section. Hence, we had a Community Tech Liaison who did the posting for him, as have I. Once the upgrades happen, a lot of these bugs will go bye bye.

You are mis informed, these are are not one time things for many have reported these many times things and to no avail. If the Techs cant fix it then we should go to the next stage. How hard is it to fix these one time bugs as you stated? Please don't be flippant about this.

Many are waiting for months now and not getting any answers except for flippant remarks that would suggest that the complainants are OTL. If this is how they solve problems that are presented to them, then i better not hold my breath. Attacking the attacker is not always the best defense, just saying. Wink, wink.

No no wait theres more,
A communication technician drafted by the army was at a firing range. At the range, he was given some instruction, a rifle and 50 rounds. He fired several shots at the target. The report came from the target area that all attempts had completely missed the target.
The technician looked at his weapon, and then at the target. He looked at the weapon again, and then at the target again. He then put his finger over the end of the rifle barrel and squeezed the trigger with his other hand. The end of his finger was blown off, whereupon he yelled toward the target area: "It's leaving here just fine, the trouble must be at your end!"

Personally, I'm willing to tolerate a few more bugs for a while to get the upgrade.
The latest version of VB isn't really that expensive, and in my experience, most hacks tend to convert over well, provided they aren't reliant on modified php files.
On this site, though, the modifications to the basic layout of the site is so extensive that a complete upgrade would be such a time consuming process (template updating and the like) that it would give me reason to call a week or two off of work just to dedicate to fixing all of the bugs that crop up as a result of conflicts with the newer system. So I feel a lot of sympathy for the techs given that responsibility.
If all of the features responsible for this problem were just stricken out of the site completely and a new upgrade to the basic VB layout were undertaken, it'd probably be just as time consuming and painful because of the entries in the database that already exist. Not to mention, all of the cool features we all probably take for granted would vanish in a puff of buggy smoke.

Once there were four engineers traveling in a car. While they were traveling to their destination the car stalled on them.
Then the first engineer who was a mechanical engineer said, "don't worry its probably engine problems. I will just pop open the bonnet and take a look at the motor".
Then the second engineer, who was an electrical engineer, said, "no, no ,no. It is an electrical problem. Just let me look at the fuse box and I will find the problem".
The third engineer, who was a chemical engineer, said, "its just a problem with the fuel. Flush out all of the petrol and replace it with new clean petrol and you will see that the car will be fine."
Then the three engineers looked at the fourth who was a computer engineer. And his response was... "Why don't we just get out of the car, shut all of the doors, and then open them again and get back in and start it!"
