View Full Version : Admins: Can you make the text entry field BIGGER please?

I find myself having to type every single post in Notepad and then copying and pasting it over to the forums entry field. Can you make a site-wide change so that the field is WAY wider (double would be awesome). I know we can already manually adjust the height, but I'd like a larger width. The smileys take up half the width.

Wait.. I dont follow what you are asking.

It doesnt matter how big the box is.. just type out everyything you want, with the necessary punctuation and paragraphs and whatnot, then submit.. and it should be in the correct form that you are looking for.

:sorry:

I'm curious, what resolution do you use?

I like seeing the entire post on one screen so I can see the big picture, LOL. I HATE scrolling.

Using my laptop and another LCD screen in a dual-screen setup: 1600x1200 on the left screen and 1680x1050 on my right screen.

Hit the preview button.. check out how it looks, make your corrections.. keep hitting preview until finally it looks golden. Then submit.

Well this is all just beating around the bush still (extra steps, extra time). What I'm asking for is a simple modification an administrator can do that will have beneficial effects.

I mean, have you been to other forums where the post text field is defaulted to a much larger size? That's what I'm requesting.

The solutions that are being proposed here are simply band-aid solutions that are meant to work around the central problem that I am wanting fixed.

Do any admins read this subforum or is there a better place for this thread?

Peace

Why would they bother doing a major site overhaul for something that is not really any issue? No one else here seems to have that problem.

i don't think your convenience is worth the time and expense of the owner of this site just because you don't want to take the extra steps to use preview or word pad, or whatever.

Major site overhaul? This is something that'll take a minute or two. This is vbulletin we're talking about. All it is is a setting that needs to be changed.

Are you sure? Every time I have seen any vBulletin site go through a change, it takes a lot of time keeping the forums down to get everything working right.

Again, why bother if this is not a big issue? You are the first one I have ever seen complain about this. Everyone else seems to handle it just fine.

The convenience of one is not worth changing a site of 100,000+

This isn't a vbulletin upgrade here that I'm talking about. It's a simple setting change. You are confusing the two.

And this is not for my convenience. This is for everyone's convenience.

Here are some screenshots:

^ Do you see how it's like typing into a little area, when that area can be made wider from the beginning?

I don't know P, I still don't inconveinienced(sp).

I never even thought about this until this thread popped up.

Eh, I was just comparing this to other forums. If you're the kind of poster who writes LONG posts that are pages and pages long and take an hour or two, then taking advantage of the screen is a GOOD thing. It really makes it easier without having to scroll everywhere just to proofread.

This is just a matter of flipping a switch and letting users take advantage of available screen width.

You know the "Increase Size" thing where the user can dynamically change the vertical size? Well, we have no control over the horizontal size, so I'd like it by default to be 2x or 3x wider.

I'll dig around and see if I can find the setting.

Did you post about it in the other section?

I don't think we're going to overturn the cf gub'mint if we're just talking about it in the single's forum you know?

Ah ha! Found it! Took less than a minute:

Message Area Width

$stylevar[messagewidth]

The message area with StyleVar controls with width of the text input area used for posting messages etc. in vBulletin.

The red arrow indicates the width controlled by this StyleVar.

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h8/mrjickles/CF/stylevar_messagewidth.png

This StyleVar will accept any value that is a valid entry for CSS width. Examples of valid values include the following:

540px (540 pixels, fixed width)
75% (75% of available width)
auto (Expand to fill all available space)

Yeah, apparently Site Supporters can't move our own threads, so I'll have to wait for a mod to kindly move this thread to that forum.

or you could make a new thread up there.

even link to this one if reposting the pics is too much trouble.

EDIT. nm, looks like just by talking to me you were able to find the answer. My work is done!

I've never thought about it before, but I guess you're right...if you post long posts it would be easier.

CoachR64

If you are going to take 1-2 hours to write a post, then you are better off doing it in word anyways. That way you can just go ahead and make all your edits, proof reads, changes, etc... and you have a copy for future use.

If I am going to spend hours writing something, I would want to have back up copies for reference and future use.

I don't think the current set up is a problem at all. Again, like Spicy, I am not inconvenienced, so yes, it is for your convenience.

Do you mean the quick reply box?

They can change just about anything on the site, but I'd think it'd be easier to delegate that functionality on a per-user basis, so not everyone gets stuck with a text entry box that stretches out the site and makes it annoying to post on any threads.

See the screenshots in post #12: I'm referring to both the Quick Reply box as well as the regular message entry field.

And for the annoying factor, it's annoying to have to scroll, don't you think? Even for the post I'm currently typing, the textbox is small relative to the width of my screen. I like the variable width setting, where you can specify 75% of the user screen instead of a fixed pixel width. Right now it seems like it's only using 50% of my screen width right now.

Peacemonger - I'm with you on this! It's often irritated me as well. I sometimes get around it by posting the draft of the message and then rejigging it in the Edit box which is page width.
