View Full Version : Reps--Could this be done differently?

I am grateful to have the ability to bless others by adding to their reputation. I think it adds a positive dimension to this forum, and helps create a happy atmosphere.

The reps, however, are each held individually on a 24 hour cycle. It makes repping difficult at times, especially for those of us who do not have a regular schedule. For some it is especially distressing. We find that we are unable to rep when we have time, and are forced instead to adhere to a repping schedule that becomes increasingly inconvenient as the reps become available later and later.

May I suggest?

Why not make reps available all at once for everyone--at say, midnight Greenwich Mean Time (12:00 AM GMT). Let people use their reps anytime in that 24 hour period. Reps could then be given again at midnight GMT, another cycle would begin.

This would make so much more sense.

I am not asking for more reps, I think we have enough. I am only asking for flexibility in using the reps we have. It would be so much more convenient to be able to use reps we get from day to day when we have time, instead of getting them on a rigid schedule, each locked in place by our timing the day before.

Please consider this idea.

Thank you for you time. We appreciate the awesome site!

I would like to put letters here which express the need for this change much better than I have been able to write.

From people who are fighting an illness:

Hello Brother,

I am one that is Very Sick, And I disagree with you, for It is a way for me to encourage others, I am in therapy 6 days a week and the times do change, I am in the hospital quite often as well do to Cancer treatment and such, and I have to find people to rep for me.

I don't like this, for I have to give my passwords away or I have someone writing something I personally wouldn't write. Please reconsider this.

I know the staff here are working very hard but I believe we should be able to rep when ever it is convenient for the poster. Not the PC clock, if you get my point.

As long as we can rep in the 40 reps a day, know time limit would be great.

LookinUp4Him and Starr71 ~ you both made EXCELLENT points, and I thank you for helping to explain so well what the rest of us are trying to say.

Most unfortunately, I too am disabled. Believe it or not, being able to give out reps to help other people to feel good is pretty much the highlight of my day. Granted, that's pretty sad, but that's my reality.

If my time keeps getting later & later, it's difficult for me. Would it kill me if I had to skip a day? Physically no, but mentally yes. Because like I said, that is the highlight of my day.

Not everyone is the same, and I believe we have numerous people here who can benefit from this change, myself included.

Ariel ~ THANK YOU for making this suggestion, and continuing to try to make it happen. I also had thoughts about suggesting this very same thing, so I'm extremely happy to see that you had done it already. Two thumbs up!

Admin ~ PLEASE make this a reality...as you can see, there are situations that exist where real people, like myself, could really be made happier ~ not just on the board, but in real life. Please help us....

Thank you!

From the mother of a young child:

My schedule is off as well, I had to wait until almost midnight last night and because I have a 5 year old who likes to get up at 6:45 in the morning and is a handful to care for I ended up going to bed because I was so tired and could not stay awake and wait until I could rep. I feel really bad about it. But if the reps were available every day at the same time like Ariel suggests then I would not have to have waited and I could get to bed at a descent hour. :prayer: Please reconsider her idea and help parents like me who can't wait until late at night to rep.

kittystorm92

From someone who has an extremely demanding work day:

No - it isn't the end of the world - but many folks like to use most (all) of their reps every day. Believe it or not that can take 2-3 hours to read posts, determine what is "rep worthy" and dispense reps with an appropriate comment. Each day it ends up getting later and later when we're able to dispense reps.

Having them all come available at the same time, no matter when we're able to log on would be a big benefit.

Yes, 6:00 AM would be great!

Just let those reps be freely available all at once.

Right now some of us are being forced to rep at times which are inconvenient to us, even interfering with family times, church and other activities.

I think this would be a great idea - otherwise the time we are able to use our available reps keeps getting later and later every day

Better to make them all available at the same time every day - and let us distribute them when we're able.

Hello,

To all this may concern:

I also wish this could be possible. I have a sleeping disorder and find it very hard to rep always at the same time.

I would love it if we were able to rep anytime in the same day. I think Ariel put it best.

I wish We could get at least 20 more. so I could rep more newbie's. And help the little guys.

TO God be the Glory of what will come of this, I pray in Jesus Christ's Almighty Name, Amen.

Thanks for hearing our requests,
Starr

God Bless you all richly.

Totally on board with this idea ... it drives me nuts trying to keep up with when the reps are refilled ... then if you have trouble with your computer or some unforseen issue where you're interrupted then you're all messed up ... Once a day is good! I figure I lose one day a week on the reps because it ends up being so late in the day I leave it for the morning. Right on, Ariel!

I like midnight better because I'm up early (before six) and I like doing my reps with my coffee ... maybe you could have an option ... one or the other ... might make it easier to make everyone happy with all the time zones and things ...

yep! ... awesome idea!

Oh, you would still be able to do them on your schedule if they were done at 6am, as they would not refill again until 6am the next morning, so you would have the 24 hours prior. But if we do them at 12, and members are not done giving them out by then, they lose what they had in their hopper when they get a new batch. :sigh:

I support this idea--to have all 40 comments listed on the User Control page, not just 20.

I often write notes of encouragement, love and support to the people I rep. Too bad that many of these comments are probably lost before they see them. When this happens, they don't get the love and encouragement that I wanted them to have. Please consider this idea as well.

I don't know what makes a difference, either. But I think the fact that most of us are site supporters would mean something. We are paying members, right? Some of us also donate time to this site.

I am so much hoping that this policy will change. Mothers with young children especially need it to change. Their days are so unpredictable. Their CF time should be a time for them to relax, not be tied to a rep schedule.

Yes, I am aware of the time zones. That is why I suggested 12:00 midnight Greenwich Mean time in my original post. Let all reps be given at once, at the same time. For some in the U.S. and Canada this will mean 3:00 to 6:00 PM. For those in Japan and Australia, this will mean their reps come in around 9:00 or 10:00 AM.

I don't think it really matters, so long as all reps come in at once, to be used at the discretion of the user, whenever thye have time and want to rep.

People will adjust.

I hope so much that CF can do this for us.

Right now people are staying up later and later to rep, to the detriment of their health. Others are sacrificing family time. Others are missing church.

I can only imagine how frustrated young mothers must be. Anyone with small children cannot plan their leisure time at all.

Also, those who have health problems--think of what a challenge--almost a straitjacket--these repping schedules are for them.

We need to change this. We absolutely need to change this.

Surely this can be done.

Why not make reps available all at once--at say midnight GT. Let people use their reps anytime in that 24 hour period. Reps are then given again at midnight, another cycle begins.

This would make so much more sense.

Consider my vote your first "nay" then.

This is like one of those bills that sounds good, but doesn't in reality make any real change.

I won't ask someone to give up their time reprogramming this site, for something as superfluous as this. Sorry.

I am sorry you feel this way, Renda, but I respect your opinion, and I will put you down as a "nay."

For me, this change would mean I could rep anytime during the day, when I have time. My schedule changes so much that I need this change, and so do many others.

I'm in agreement.

When you consider that it takes a finite amount of time to rep someone, and then you multiply that by 20 or 40 reps a day, you get a rather significant chunk of time lost to the actual repping process, time that is "lost" each day to the current 24-hour process, effectively reducing your total rep amount at least a few reps each day.

Resetting reps each day at a certain time of the day would ensure we all get to rep our total number each day, whenever we choose.

I am so happy to have the ability to swap reps with others. I think it really adds a positive dimension to this forum, and the ability to bless each other seems to help a create a happy atmosphere.

Reps are then given again at midnight GMT, another cycle begins.

This would make so much more sense.

I guess you don't mind people giving up their time for you so you can get new amour for it. Which takes a whole lot of time to do as compared to a small programming change.

I don't think the time zone will be that important, so long as you know that at a certain time you will have all your reps, and you can use them anytime you want in the next 24 hours. For example, if you get them at 10:00 AM, then you know that you have until that time again to use them up before the next batch comes in.

I am not asking about storing the reps, I'm just trying to deal with this important issue. I know of at least one case where a friend logs on to their friend's character and reps for them.

I agree with this motion. My vote is "Yes".

There were two threads. One of them--the one in the private suggestions forum--was archived.

This one hasn't been. So I am going to continue to post on it.

The archived thread only has one post from me, and one from SuzyBeezy, who is a moderator and had access to the thread. It doesn't have all the member input this thread has.

At the present time, there are 123 replies on this thread, and 1,008 hits. There has been much support for this idea, including some sent to me via PM.

This change is needed most, I believe, by those who are ill. They especially need this change to give them the freedom to rep when they have time and are feeling up to it.

The only problem I see with this is that reps have become something they were not intended to become. A reputation point wasn't just for stars, but for those who have great posts and someone wants to reward them for a good post. I don't think reps should become available any sooner then what it is currently at. You can bless someone if you have ran out of reps for the day.

Yes, and you're right. Rep points should be for great posts, and I have received many for such as well.

But I still believe that this change needs to be made. This is a problem for those who have schedules which change a lot. It is forcing people to adhere to an artificial schedule if they want to rep someone.

I am not asking for more reps. I believe we have plenty. I am just asking for more flexibility in using them--the ability to use them when we have time to be online.

Thank you so much for your consideration.

We are all bound to the same universal schedule. It's to make it fair for all, if we set the reputation reset at 12:00am it will be the same thing for all people. I don't think this feature is necessary in the least bit. If you don't get your 40 reps in a day ( SS ) or 20 ( NS ) its not the end of the world. You can still rep the next day.

True. But right now we have people staying up late to rep, even people who are sick.

I really think this needs to be changed.

Ariel
22nd March 2008, 10:13 AM
Something else, too, Richard that you may not be aware of is how difficult it is to be online for those who are taking care of small children. Right now the system does not help them at all, but rather penalizes them.

Please, please change this. I am not asking for more reps, just flexibility.

I was on a cycle where I had to rep after 9:30 pm. becuz I was gone the previous day....
it's a nitemare.
Once you're schedule gets thrown off, you're toast.

And it isn't the end of the world as Richard mentions, but neither is any other feature here at CF that we can do without for 1 day. (why change anything for that matter)?? This is about a more pleasant experience here, like any other suggestion as we participate here at CF and prefer the least amount of irritation or aggrivation. =)

But there are alot of unique threads that are now made where you need your reps at certain times of the day - the rep subforum has alot of unique threads where you do need to be on a good rep schedule.

Prior to that subforum it wouldn't be so necessary or important.
I would think universal reps for all would actually be easier & less complicated for CF.

Well if he isn't saying that Staff is saying no, you know that he disagree's and you can add him to your list with RendaLane. And then there would be no more need to argue.

Richard Mac is one of the moderators who takes care of requests in this subforum. I don't know if he is disagreeing personally, or telling us that CF is saying no.

I am saddened that he does not realize how precious our time is. I can't be on the computer all day. I have to be able to get on and off at times that are good for me.

And yes, I like to rep people. It encourages them and builds relationships.

*this reply was more to Richard - but was in agreement with Ariel's post*
sorry if it seemed confusing.

Exactly Ariel - this is about us suggesting things FOR OUR CONVENIENCE and benefit and our pleasure (since most of us reppers are SS's).

It isn't the end of the world if we miss a day or a block of reps we can't spend in 1 day, it's about the time inconveniences when reps are a large part of what we enjoy or use to encourage others....

If this is viewed this way, then why suggest anything anymore since nothing's really important.?

My schedule is off as well, I had to wait until almost midnight last night and because I have a 5 year old who likes to get up at 6:45 in the morning and is a handful to care for I ended up going to bed because I was so tired and could not stay awake and wait until I could rep. I feel really bad about it. But if the reps were available every day at the same time like Ariel suggests then I would not have to have waited and I could get to bed at a descent hour. :prayer: Please reconsider her idea and help parents like me who can't wait until late at night to rep.

I don't think reps should become available any sooner then what it is currently at. You can bless someone if you have ran out of reps for the day.
I think this whole site had become something it wasn't intended to become from what Ive been told, but we are speaking about reps here ;). The changes that happened in July show proof of that. How bad of people are we Richard for just a simple request to have them come in all at once daily instead of spending to much time logging in to "encourage" someone with the next "batch"??..There are many features on CF that were intended to keep people on the site, such as Animals to take care of, arcade games. etc, etc. Having these come in all at once surely wont take away from how much people come here ;)

Thank you!

I'd also like to request that all 40 comments for Site Supporters be listed on the User Control page, rather than just 20. That would be really excellent. :)

I am supportive of the OP suggestion and also like the additional suggestion that joy makes.

Pastor RD, I think we may need to start a fresh thread for JoyShirley's suggestion. That way the two ideas could be considered independently of one another. If my idea is not approved--and it doesn't look hopeful right now--then maybe at least Joy's could be.

Your thoughts may be the way YOU see things, but the reps mean a great deal more to ME (and I suspect many others) than you may think. I appreciate your remarks, however I disagree with you. I use reps to encourage, to send a quick note without that irritating PM message flashing constantly, to welcome new members on board to feel that I can reach out in friendship to many and to praise those who are looking for praise and friendship. Were it not for the repaholic subforum and the rep games that are being conducted THROUGHOUT THIS FORUM, many people wouldn't even bother to log on. I've increased my support of this forum because of the fellowship and good Christian camaraderie that has come about due to the Reputation threads. You are WRONG and I'd encourage others to post their feelings. I've seen forums that were previously glum and dead come alive and a new joy is spreading over the forum that has originated with the reputation feature's increased use. Not everyone is here to discuss/debate/argue. Some of us are hear to pray, encourage and praise.

Missdancearama, all of us are frustrated right now, and probably those trying to fix the problems most of all. We've been asked not to complain right now, they are trying to fix the problems.

Meanwhile, let's hope that this idea is considered as well.

I see this completely differently......I left CF the end of last year because of the bickering and the hateful and unloving things people were allowed to say to others. My site supporter expired and I had absolutely no intention of renewing. I did sign in from time to time to get my PMs and on one occasion I checked out a few old haunts to see if anything had changed and in doing so stumbled across the Repaholic Sub-forum and found people enjoying each other, fellowshipping, encouraging one another, and most importantly Praising God. I started signing in on a more regular basis and eventually renewed my site supporter. I can tell you that if things were to return to the way they were, where people just seemed to want to fight and argue, I would not stick around, which also means I would not be a site supporter as the reason I do is because it is currently a site that I enjoy coming to for fellowship and friendship.

I also wanted to say that because of the Repaholic sub-forum I have met a bunch of new friends who I would not have known before because we would not have frequented the same forums.

This request for the reps all at once is not asking for anything more than we already have it is just asking that we get them in one lump that expires at the end of a 24-hour period instead of dribbling them out and having them come later and later each day. We are asking for a convenience and nothing more.

I do hope that the powers that be will look at this request with an open mind and seriously consider this and implement this request soon.

RichardMac: We have on several occassions had the need for communication. I've always found you to be reasonable, caring, encouraging and helpful. I feel this time, however, we are in complete disagreement. I actually find it condescending and presumptuous for someone to say you can give them blessings or something. My ministry is my ministry and it is based on an individual need ... sometimes it's blessings ... sometimes advice ... sometimes encouragement ... and sometimes reps .... and usually one won't work for the other. And I have a real issue with someone deciding for me what will work. I'm already disillusioned with all the endless, needless bickering and arguing that goes on in these forums ... I SS a total of eleven people ... when I go that goes ... and I will go if we're going to start dictating how we minister. Not all is as it seems. I have ten stars ... yet if you look ... I rarely go to the rep forum ... please don't lump all into one bundle. I am in no way trying to offend the rep forum ... I just don't have time to go there .... When I do go to the rep forum it is for the fun and entertainment I need sometimes ... and I have a blast there! The reps serve many purposes ... no matter how trivial it seems to some!

I love this post Spud.

I happen to be a debater and enjoy that and probly always will - but my debate/congregational friends don't come to the rep forum or have time to.
I started coming to the rep forum to gain rep points TO PASS TO THEM for encouragement to them.

I've also met people in the forum and have gotten close to a few which I wouldn't have otherwise.
People can attack that forum, but it's actually a great and addictively fun area that I value here on different levels.

I joined CF four years ago, I believe.

I used to go to the debate forums. I got so discouraged. It felt like I was just blowing into the wind, arguing endlessly with non-believers who didn't want to listen. I would encourage myself in the Lord and go on.

Finally, I gave up, and left, for almost a year, I think. The only time I did come back was to post in the Fitness section, where an awesome trainer named Fitmom still posts today.

Then last year I went to my age-assigned forum for fellowship. I was attacked there and hurt so deeply that I just wanted to leave again. Somehow I went on, to be attacked again and again by the same person until finally I just confronted her, and was reported by her, of course. I almost left again.

But the moderator persuaded me to put her on "ignore" and told her to do likewise. Well, on ignore or not, she is still following me around. Her name is listed on my blog page, for example. How could she have me on "ignore" if she is reading my blog?

In desperation I went to another age-related forum. She followed me there, and was instrumental in closing that thread down.

Then I realized she DESPISES the rep forums. Finally! A place I can fellowship!

It seems strange, but I have felt more welcomed, more encouraged, more comforted and certainly more befriended in the repaholics sub-forum more than in any other place. We joke that we are addicted to repping, but that's not really it. We love the fellowship, the kindness, the encouragement.

Perhaps CF administrators don't realize it, but in giving us the power to rep, we have also been enabled to be an encouragement to others. It feels so good to be able to rep someone.

I am not asking for more reps, I think we have plenty. I just believe we need the flexibility to be able to rep when we have time to be online.

Thank you, all who are listening. Many of you have become my friends, and I am so blessed by your friendship.

Yes, more than you know.

BUT not since I started hanging out in the Repaholics Subforum. :) I have been so blessed.

I've found myself thinking that we probably have fewer fights, and fewer reportable incidents in that forum than in any other place on CF.

And I think it's because we are used to blessing each other.

Actually the Pentecostal forum has not had to have a moderator there in the time I've been there ... I don't know about sooner. And I, also think it's because we bless each other. One of the ways we do it is through reps. We feel we are a very blessed forum and our reps, blessings, etc. should reflect that. And I agree ... the rep forum is another "stress free zone".

That's the problem, we're stuck with the previous day's schedule. If CF is down like it was for hours we're stuck on a messed up cycle which mite conflict with the next day's schedule they have (if they won't be around).
People who work or have events or can't be around a previous day are just messed up the next day or 2 or 3.

I don't think they realize that this one change is more important to me than anything else. Nothing could please me more than being able to use my reps when I have time.

That's exactly what I'm hoping for.

Thank you. I will add your name to the list.
I am praying. I hope the is a change soon.

 awesome, thanks!

I agree BellaSong, there's over 64 now I think(counting Iec91820)?
And now that my rep cycle is completely messed up again since Saturday, I'm back to add another comment that this would be a very welcomed change to anyone who uses reputations.

I would love to be able to Rep at a decent hour instead of waiting until after 10pm (Central). My husband would like me to come to bed and not be up so late waiting to Rep. PLEASE PLEASE make this change!!!!

This has happened to me too. I start resenting the forum for taking precious time away from my family.

I agree. I''d like to rep at a decent hour too.

Yes.

I'm having similar problems. This is one more reason why this system needs to be changed.

although, you could just forgo rep one day and then rep the next day whenever you want

it's a tradeoff between short-term reps and long-term convenience

That may be true, but then it just happens again anyways where if you have to do something 1 day or go somewhere or your power or phone lines go out, you're stuck in yet another nasty rep cycle that you have rework out of.

Life happens and it does cause alot of inconveniences for many people.

and another thing is that you're pretty much forced into giving out your reps as fast as possible

holding reps is like holding cash, it always loses value because then the next day you'll have to give out reps later

Yep I had a quilting softare class the other night and now I'm even more messed up. Mine will come in so late tonight I will probably just have to let them go to tomorrow morning and then start over till I find myself in the same endless loop. :swoon: :swoon: :swoon:

That is so true about repping fast if you don't want them all spread out later and later in the day. :tutu: :tutu:

I know I give 5 out in the morning and then the rest has to be after 9 or 10 at night. It's hard.
