I passed a Mennonite lady outside my office tower as I walked in to work this morning. Not a particularly unusual sight around our province, though not common in the downtown core. She was wearing a typical "plain" dress and her braided hair was neatly tucked up under her traditional black cap. Her head was serenely bowed -- over the text screen of her cell phone!:D

Ha -- one of them "fancy" Mennonites. I bet. Probably has chrome bumpers on her car, too. :D

I used to help pass tracts with a Mennonite missionary. I was shocked the first time I met him driving a car, no beard wearing blue jeans and a polo shirt. I was shocked. Unfortunately I didn't know much about the Mennonites or the Amish and you can imagine I was expecting a horse drawn carriage etc. He was a wonderful man to get to know and work beside.

[I lived in Lancaster, PA too long.]I've been to Lancaster! One of my sister's used to live in Columbia, PA. We visited her for a week. We saw a lot of the Amish, I think - not sure the difference between them and the Mennonites. (I know I could Wikipedia them, but...) I was so glad to have seen that part of the USA before she moved.

Surprising? I suppose so. However, it's not a contradition to Mennonite thinking. There are stricter branches and more liberal ones, but all hold to the spirit of Anabaptism. This case, as you describe it, is not outside the bounds of that spirit or heritage.
