I'm looking into purchasing either the Jordanville prayer book, or the Holy Transfiguration Monastery prayer book. :)

Which one do you prefer to use? Why do prefer to use it?

Thanks!
Lokken

Woah, I was just thinking about starting a thread on this. I'm looking for a good one as well.

Thanks for the link! I had read it online before. I couldn't find anything on the Holy Transfiguration Monastery prayer book. I hear that it is similar to the Jordanville except being from the Greek instead of Russian. Are there any other differences besides that? :)

Here's more info on the Holy Transfiguration Monastery book....

Translated from the Greek by the Holy Transfiguration Monastery

“The Apostle of the Nations enjoins us to ‘pray without ceasing,’ and this goal of uninterrupte noetic prayer remains the goal of every Christian. In our times, however, we are faced with demands and distractions which make this goal all the more difficult. We would therefore especially urge all Christians to spend time in prayer in the morning, to remember the prayers before and after meals, and to read the Service of Small Compline in the evening. Every day, monastics are enjoined to read the Akathist to the Theotokos as part of their daily rule of prayer, and we would also commend this practice to all Orthodox Christians. These are small things, and yet the establishment of them as a cycle of daily prayers is of very great importance to our spiritual life[.]”

I'm not sure about the Jordanville,
but Holy Transfiguration Monastery uses low acid paper ; their books are made to last.

I don't have the HTM prayerbook, only the Jordanville. I consider it my "main" prayerbook, though I use others, too.

The Jordanville has all the Canons and Preparation Prayers used for preparing for Communion, which I like.

im down with Jordanville but theyre both pretty phatty. Jordanville has hte Canon of Repentance which I really like, but HTM has The Small AND Great Canon to the Theotokos which is good for Dormition. I also like that HTM has Small Compline, but I like that Jordanville has separate evening prayers. I got Jordanville for Christmas and I'm cool with it.

Does anyone know if they fold out flat, so one can lay them on the table while praying without them closing? Or must they be held open with the left hand?

a book with a sewn binding should be able to withstand that sort of use without losing pages, cracked spine, etc.

when you go to order, ask the publisher if the pages are sewn or glued :)

I like and use the Jordanville - not seen the HTM one but I have to admit that my favourite is the Old Orthodox Prayer Book from Erie .

After you have used any book for a while ,Justin, they will stay flat , more or less :) , on a table . You can always use a marker to hold your page in case they do shut :)

I use the little red pocket one put out by the Antiochians, which is great for me while I'm beginning the faith. I like it because it goes wherever I go. It would be nice to have a more extensive one for the home!

I'm with you there. I love the Old Orthodox Prayer Book. I think that one is the best. I really like the Jordanville prayer book too. But really, if you really want a recomendation for a prayer book, the best place to turn is your spiritual father.

I like Jordanville because it's made by real Orthodox rather than schismatic weirdos. :P

HOCNA, the so-called "Holy Orthodox Church of North America", which controls Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Brookline, MA, among other places. In other words, when you buy from HTM (or any of HOCNA's other monasteries), you are lining the pockets of people who make a mockery of the monastic life and the Orthodox Faith.

Why do online Orthodox stores (such as Life&Light) carry their books?

Unfortunately they are the only ones who publish certain books used... or their version is considerably better than the book published by a canonical jurisdiction.

If you wear out a prayer book -
then God's blessings will certainly be upon you!!! :)
