View Full Version : Choosing a Patron Saint

I'm looking at various Orthodox saints to see who I might want to choose as my patron saint once I am chrismated. In a way - I would really like to have St Laura of Cordoba be my patron saint. She is a Western pre-schism saint (martyred in ~894 AD).
So, my question is - Is it okay to have a pre-schism western saint as a patron saint?

I don't see why not. As long as they are pre-schism, Saints are Saints.
Besides, I'm biased - I'd love to see more western Saint named people, especially given that most converts have western heritage.

the last saint that the east and west both recognize is St Edward the Confessor, who reposed in 1066. he died right before the Norman invasion, which brought the pro filioque theology. so any saint before that is just as orthodox as every other one.

We have a Laura in our parish. None of us had heard of St. Laura until she told us about her.

Great :) I'm hoping to talk to Fr Tim about getting Chrismated this next Wednesday at our catechism class.
Another question....I looked up icons on St. Laura - and it seemed like they are rare to none. Do all of you have icons of your patron saints? If they are not common saints - do you have an icon commissioned? Honestly - if I were to commission an icon - there are some others which I would prefer even more than an icon of my patron saint to be...but...that's just me.
What do you all do in cases like this? (or what have others that you know done?)
