Would anyone like to explain to me what Mormonism is? I suppose it doesn't have its own forum because it's supposedly not part of Christianity....anyone want to explain it? Also, what are some of their..er..."unique" customs?

Mormonism is a Pseudo-Christian sect, that has some Cult overtones.
Their "Signature" trait is the Belief in Their "Book of Mormon" as another testament of Jesus Christ, as he appeared shortly after his crucifiction to the peoples of North and South America.
This Book was given to their Founder and Prophet, Joseph Smith in the early 1800's by an "Angel of Light" Moronai (not sure on the spelling). This Angel taught J.Smith about how all the existing Christian Churches had all Fallen into error, and that none were True.
The Angel told J. Smith that He was choosen by God to Re-Establish the True Church.
Mormonism borrows many features of traditional Judeo-Christianity and Free Masonry, and puts a uniquely Mormon spin on them. They claim to hold the Bible as correct "As Long as it is Translated Correctly" and then make claim that since the Book of Mormon has been only translated once, and that by J. Smith himself, that The Book of Mormon is Inerrant in it's Translation (thus superior to The Bible). Any discrepancy between the Bible and the Book of Mormon is quickly explained as an obvious error in the Bible's Translation.
Mormonism is extremely Anti - "Traditional" Church, and tries to blaim the Church for many of the Translation Errors and Politically expedient Scriptural Changes over time that have caused so much error in the Bible of Today.
This Forum considers them to be Non-Christian mainly due to their non-compliance with the Nicene Creed, and the problems with Biblical Inerrancy.

people who try to leave the church have great difficulty, often being completely shunned by family and friends.
there is blood atonement, also - they believe that the blood of Jesus does not cover ALL sins, and that the person's own blood must be shed to atone for their sins. so if a family member falls into sin, they feel it is best to shed their blood and thus atone for their sins, rather than them going to hell or whatever is their perspective on that (i'm not sure)... blood atonement, from what i understand, always results in death...
a great perspective on mormonism in "the God-makers" volumes 1 and 2. 1 is more about their doctrine, 2 is more about what they do... i just watched these again yesterday! :)
apparently they own a great deal of hawaii, and own the merriot hotel chain (at least as of 15 years or so ago.)
they believe that when they die, married couples can become gods of their own planets, eternally producing spirit babies and populating their planet.
they believe that God the Father (whom they call Elohim(sp?)) came down to earth and had sex with mary to produce Jesus and his brother Joseph Smith and satan.
they teach that Jesus had wives and several children.
what else?... well, polygamy. one of their recent presidents had like 16 wives.
and there are stories of sexual abuse, and divorce on very unbiblical grounds. :sigh:
a woman is considered basically useless and to be divorced if she cannot have children.
i lost a mormon friend when i started asking hard questions of her - her husband wouldnt let us have any contact. :sigh:
that's all i can think of for now.

Mormons also believe in "baptism" after death for the salvation of a loved one. They also believe there is a limited amount of space in Heaven, so not everyone who believes will be saved. (guess you have to make reservations early ?)
Mormons are not allowed to marry outside the church and in some areas do not allow non-members to attend services. (They will dispute this, but it happened to me when I spent a Saturday night with a Mormon friend and was not allowed to go with them Sunday morning. Also, one member of this family married a guy who had been a Catholic and converted for her, but his family was not allowed to attend the wedding, just the reception.)
Mormons put an odd spin on history. had one of their door-to-door teams try to convince me that Christ appeared to the Mayans in Ohio. I guess they were on vacation visiting the moundbuilders. (they didn't bother me after I pointed out Mayans were central and south America, not central North America and that Ohio didn't exsist in their time).
Mormons are not supposed to drink alcohol or caffinated drinks, smoke, have sex before marriage, use birth control, miss worship service---all things the Mormons I knew strayed into quite liberally.
If you look into the backgrounds of the people who "witnessed" the original Mormon text you find that most of them where related to or owed money to Smith.
Two good points about the Mormons -- an extensive geneological research library and a great sounding choir.
Alot of what I know was picked up from 2 Mormon families I went to school with.

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!
The Bible is inerrant as we have it today.
The all powerful infinite creator of the universe is quite capable of maintaining the purity of His word despite man's frail attempts to corrupt it.
Above all it is the Holy Spirit within us that will bear witness to our spirit whether what we read is true or not.

joseph smith was also heavily into the occult, and it's interesting to note that while they call themselves "christians", their temples have NO christian symbols on them, but have many occultic symbols on them, such as the pentagram and i believe the "all seeing eye" thing on top of a pyramid, very new age. many of the higher ups are very into the new age, on the God Makers part two, one of their presidents, on camera, stated that he was very involved in the new age.....

Hi there!
If you want to know the truth, then go ask a member of the CoJCoLDS's..... just post on the Unorthodox Forum, and you will will hear both sides of the story.
This...
Mormons are not allowed to marry outside the church and in some areas do not allow non-members to attend services.
is not true. Member may marry whomever they wish, however, they may not be sealed in the temple with an unbeliever, therefore, no eternal marriage... but they may marry whomever they wish.
I
Also, one member of this family married a guy who had been a Catholic and converted for her, but his family was not allowed to attend the wedding, just the reception.)
Non-members are not allowed in the temple.... ever. See... this why you need to post to a member of the CoJCoLDS if you want to know what they believe. The previous posting is "thinking" like a protestant, interchanging "church" for the "temple". There are ward/stake meeting houses and then there is the temple. A big difference when speaking about the CoJCoLDS's.
Sorry, if I offended any of the previous posters.

Well, non-members are allow in the temple during "open house" before the dedicatation when the temple then is closed to the public.

They baptize the dead by proxy.... "everyone" ... not just non-mormon ancestors.
Hitler has been baptized... that cause a stir. More recently, the temple workers were baptizing Jewish halocaust members, and that was a second "stir"...though the public statement is that they WERE ancestors of real mormons.

Our OP is off-line at the moment and will he get an eye full!
Unfortunately, I have a medium sized Mormon temple not far from my house. I got the opportunity to "tour" that bizzare place. It is the most unchristian building that I have ever seen, tho' I am glad I satisfied my curiousity. I have no desire to ever enter another spiritually dark weird place like that again.
Mormonism will never be true Chrisitainity, tho' they protest loud and long about such truth from orthodox Christians. It is important that you know and understand your own faith so that when you see a counterfeit like Mormonism you will know it instantly.
The Jesus of Mormonism is not the Jesus of the Bible.

Mormons don't believe Jesus is God. They believe He is a god, and that in the fulfillment of the priesthood, all good mormon males will become gods in the afterlife.

I worked with a Mormon guy who was retiring and moving to Utah. When we talked about retiring he told me he was going into missionary work. I was interested in that because I'd like to retire early and do missionary work, too. Then he proceeds to tell me that this "missionary" work involved baptizing his dead relatives at the temple! Well, when I regained my composure I just blinked and said that wasn't exactly the kind of missionary work I thought I'd be doing.....R

One of their brainwashing techniques is to send kids off for a year of missionary work right out of high school, so that it breaks all their bonds of friendship with non-mormon friends. It's pretty sad. :sigh:

Actually, the men can only be exalted to godship if they have a wife to whom they have been sealed in the temple.
But, at the resurrection, "she" doesn't resurrect unless "he" calls her by her secret temple name.
He needs her for godship, she needs him to be resurrected.... that's why they get sealed.

That's right. One of my best friends from high school did that. He went to a year of college first though. We hung out almost every day, now I've seen him twice since he's come back.
