View Full Version : Reformed Lutheran Liturgy?

I was wondering if Rose could post her Pentecost service here, so those inquiring minds could review it! :D
Also I wanted to open up a discussion about "Contemporary Services" and how they should be structured with regards to our rigid liturgical history. Would it ever be 'right' for a Lutheran church to turn completely contemporary, 30 min. singing 30 min. sermonizing? Is there place for Modern Music in the Lutheran Church?
I also wonder how many people think when they read the title, "This must be a debate between Red, Green and Blue hymnals" :D

I think it's okay if songs are replaced with appropriate contemporary ones, but the rest of the liturgy should remain the same.

This would have to be defined beyond doubt!
Someone needs to get there a$$ busy and finish Bird's book on Lutheran Hymnody!

I don't know if today's style is befitting a Lutheran Church though. The style is lets play this music so loud and only be able to hear those who are on the stage. I can never hear the congregation sing in todays contemporary service. The atmosphere changes to a party rather than the people of God. (Not to mention I don't like the looks of all the insturnments scattered about the altar).

this should never be! :o instruments on the altar! :sigh: the only thing I was conceding to was contemporary hymns, and that, only if they were truly Lutheran hymns! i would not attend a Lutheran church dressed up in a neo-evangelical gown!

Dare I ask how you feel about "liturgical dance"?
Just forget I even mentioned it! ;)

It can be done respectfully. Choose appropriate songs and have the musicians stand off to the side, in the balcony, etc.
Personally, I loathe Christian Contemporary, I'd much rather hear some Bach.
If I was a pastor, I'd break out my synths, drum machine, and turn table; then we'd have some real music :P

James, your wish is my command. It took me quite a while to figure out how to post this--I am pretty much a FrontPage idiot and I couldn't get FrontPage to connect to my webspace with Bellsouth...so I finally had to go about it a different way.
Rose's Pentecost Service (http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-lieffring)
When you read it, it will not read much different than a standard liturgy. The music is different. The links to samples of all the songs are in the song titles...if you want to get a flavor for the music..and the difference is in the music. Further, I believe worship should involve more than mind and mouth...I think the whole body should engage in worship...so there are a few places were movement other than standing and sitting is suggested.
Peace
Rose

In my church on the "contemporary Sunday"s we do strict Liturgy, but we just replace all the traditional songs with contempory ones.

They have an ELCA church that does the 30minutes of singing 30 minute sermon around here. (we didn't know that and it was weird not have the liturgy:eek: ) Some Lutheran's like to get away from it sometimes though but still have the same doctrinal teachings. Then there are people like my family who have to have the liturgy!

I must admit that I did think that it was!

I like the liturgy. I don't want to open a hymnal for anything but the song lyrics. :P
I'm not keen on the contemporary stuff.

My sentiments exactly, I can meditate on the words better if I don't have to follow along. Plus it gives you two free hands to praise with ;) .

What would some of you deem as essentials for a Contemporary Lutheran Liturgy?
(other than obviously confession, the sermon and the verba)

Well I am more in favor of the traditional service myself. I feel that much of the contemporary "Praise and Worship" music of today is not theologically correct and the type of service your talking about is pretty much a "Theology of Glory and not Theology of the cross.
Have you ever looked into the history of the Divine Service? It is designed to bring you to the cross and convict you of your sins and announce God's grace and forgiveness.
Not only that but the type of service you are asking about is usually sans confessions. I couldn't go to church anymore if I couldn't confess my sins.
