God hears all our prayers. He may not answer them immediately, but being the omniscient, omnipresent God that He is, he hears ALL our prayers. Thus, why do we need to pray? Or at least, why more than once? Can we pray a quick prayer of forgiveness that will cover us the rest of our lives? Can we say grace "Please bless this food, and all the food that we shall ever eat..." and thats it? What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that prayer is an act of obedience. Granted God knows all that's on our mind and in store for us, but we are to be obedient and pray anyway. It also brings us closer to Him spiritually. Here's an analogy, although a weak one, say you have a wife and you and your wife decided that since you know everything about each other (like that's ever going to happen) there's no reason to talk anymore. Can you imagine how stale the relationship would get? See what I mean?

He still wants to hear us ask.
Just like our parents wouldn't let us just take a cookie, or two :yum:
we had to ask.
What parent denied a cookie for no good reason?
Phil 4:6 says
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

I for one have been very neglectful of my prayer life. While I always ask for blessings on my food before I eat it and it is then I remember all those that have asked me to pray for some specific need. During hours of my day I do remember the Lord and give thanks for many blessings. My neglect is as I lay down for bed before I know it I'm out like a light. It is the same way if I read the Bible at bed time.

prayer is not for God, people pray like oh God please give me this and that and help me with my money situation and also give me, me, me.
prayer is for us, prayer is asking to be in truth, in the house of truth.
In Christ all needs are met, he is the truth, truth is if your in need your outside of where you should be. being thankful for what you do have, thankful for the pain in your life that it has turned you to God. thankful that you are alive. is that not enough? or have your needs become worldly.
what is prayer? prayer is shedding off the unimportant things of this world and entering into the light of God. prayer is asking for the strength to not have needs other then God. prayer is asking to have less of this world. and more of God. what do you pray for?    rejoice for grief is upon you.

What about the idea that 'repeated prayer' that is praying for something over and over again is a form of unbelief! That you have no trust in God, or that God heard you in the first place. Or that God forgot what you prayed for and needs reminding? Your thoughts?

I am sure that it is very much like when a child asks a parent if they can stay at sombody's house (the parents have all ready agreed to meet at a certain time). The parent needs to be asked to do something but if you do something before the child asks it is labled "unoriginal" therefor the child wouldn't like the night at the friend's house.

Prayer is not just about getting what you receive. In Dutch we have a saying that says: of what the heart is full, the mouth runs over. Meaning that if we care about something very much, we talk about it a lot. This doesn't mean we have a lack of trust. But since God is the most important person to talk to, why wouldn't we keep talking about it to him?
Each time you pray, you lay off the burden of a worry or care and give it to him in trust. Instead of a sign of lack of faith, I believe it would be a sign of continuous faith.

Well I think continuous prayer keeps us mindful of what we are asking for. If we only pray once and God doesn't answer, then we may tend to be angry with God. If we pray every day for it then we keep it constantly on our minds and we tend to think about it and understand that maybe if God doesn't answer it's not for the best.

God wants to know how we're feeling. Praying is how we communicate and talk with Him, so we need to always let Him know what's going on. If that means that we need to pray for things more than once, so be it.

Yes, we should pray continuously.
I take this to another level.
Whenever I hear an ambulance or fire alarm I stop what I am doing and pray for those going to help and those needing the help.
Of course, I live in Maine and that does not happen very often.
Someone mentioned doing that at a church camp I went to (I believe).
It stuck because it seemed like such a simple thing to do.
And you never know who's life may have been touched by those prayers.
Would it not be awesome if someday you found out it was a loved one you had prayed for unknowingly in that situation. I know I think too much.
I also pray as I am driving for my driving skills and the sanity of the drivers around me.

Can I ask how people talk to God when they pray? Are they very Biblical and proper or conversational? I find myself being very conversational, just like I'm talking to a friend. Is this worng and would He be insulted by this? I do pray constantly if I desperately need help though.

I talk to him conversationally and I believe that is biblical.
Isn't there a story or parable about one person talking so high and mighty and it was made clear that added nothing to the prayer.
I think God likes it when we truly relate to him as a friend with respect.
GOD knows who we are and what are heart is.
He already knows our needs he just wants us to come to him with them.
We do not need to talk in elaborate words.
And our prayers need not take hours. (Little exaggerated but you get my picture)

I think it's important at times to keep praying
Mat 7:8 For everyone who keeps asking will receive, and the person who keeps searching will find, and the person who keeps knockingkwill have the door opened. ( ISV)
However, at other times when we know within our spirits that God has heard, then there is no need to keep asking. I think it depends on the situation.

That's really good Lizquests, I'm forget to pray sometimes, but sometimes it is like that, I talk to him, and sometimes I see "signs" of God that I wouldn't see earlier in my walk with God. But I realize when I seclude myself from my earthly father, it is then that I also seclude myself from God. And I am sad for both these things.

Are we there yet? NO matter how often the kids in the car on a long trip ask, will it help asking the same question over and over?
Mixed bag. Once I acknowledge to my children that I understand their wishes, asking me over and over, every day, day in and day out, isn't going to make it happen any quicker. If I don't acknowledge hearing, and they're not sure they had my attention, they may bring it up again.
Questions about Prayer is one of the questions that brought me to this site. I never got the Prayer for Dummies book, so I really don't even know what one does when they say they will pray for you, or you have my prayers, or when someone says they pray every night.
If you are going to get something regardless of what you do, then praying every day, like asking Are we there yet? will eventually be answered YES. If you are not going to get something no matter what you think you want, then praying every day may be keeping you from actually doing something yourself to effect the change, if it could be possibly by your own actions.

We pray because it is an act of respect and being obediant to the Lord..we should never just expect anything from the Lord...by asking him for his help it lets him know we do trust in him and if it is his will it shall be resolved and that we need him to guide us,protect us, or just listen to what is in our hearts.

Or at least, why more than once? Can we pray a quick prayer of forgiveness that will cover us the rest of our lives? Can we say grace "Please bless this food, and all the food that we shall ever eat..." and thats it? What are your thoughts?
Why should we pray continuously? Because it is how we show Good that he is in our lives and that we are thinking of him and what he want of us. Also the act af praying is a outword symbol of our devotion and faith in God. How faithful would you think someone was if they never prayed, or only prayed five times in thier life to cover everything that they did and would ever need. I personally would question that persons walk with God, because if they feel that by praying once they can wipe clean every sin they have and will commit, it seems obvious to me that they are more concerned with living as they want than in doing what good wants.
Further our pray time is the time we spend talking to God. Although God does know all and see all, he likes it when we come to him and tell him. Doesn't it make you feel better when people come to you and tell you things, even if you already know about them. When we pray we are not just to ask God for things, prayer is a time of reflection and meditation on what God is trying to say to you. If you don't pray on a regular basis you could be missing alot of little pushes from God.
The bible tells us that we should be in a constant state of prayer and thanksgiving, we should use every breathe we recieve to thank and glorify God. After all you never know when you are going to die....maybe you wont get the chance to do your 'one pray for forgiveness' and then what will God say when you stand before him?

I love praying. If I am asking for something for myself or someone else. I tell JC the need, then anytime in the future when I refer to that prayer. I thank JC for answering it.
Sometime, I just sing to Him.
I've made it a habit in traffic and waiting in lines to pray. We wait in lines so much that it gives me ample time to remember everyone. So it spares me the 'falling asleep at night prayer' thing. In fact, since I pray and talk to God so much during the day my night time prayers are really simple.
*The praying in traffic and lines has the added benefit of curbing 'road rage.' It's impossible for me to go from prayer to 60 on the rageometer. I keep a little notebook in the car with prayers to remember for folks.
* I like to pray for those people around me in lines, walking or driving along side me. They are not made of glass so I can't know what they need, but JC does.
I also pray for things that have already happened. Because I believe there is no time in God's realm. So I can pray now and he can apply it to yesterday.
Oh yeah, and I also try and have some quiet time with God, so I'm not yak yak yaking all the time, even if it is prayer. Just time to float in him and abide.
I have also started keeping a not well organized prayer journal. Mainly I just go over it once in a while and it surprises me to see how my prayers were met.

well,
I pray repeatedly, detemined that my prayers and thoughts are as clear as glass, its not as if My Lord would say to me "stop hassling me child, I'm onto it!" because he cares. Repeated prayer about any matter can offer comfort and a vent for anger and sadness etc. It certainly isn't showing a weakness in faith, I believe it to be the opposite!

Yes we should pray continuously. Jesus said about if you pray for something and believe in your heart that it is done then it will be. Praying continuously is not to make God wake up and hear you, It is instead a way of making yourself sure that it is done.
Or something like that!

I believe that we should be in a heart of prayer with God constantly and should pray on a frequent basis. I do not believe in vain repetition as God, Being the omnipotent being that He is, won't forget our requests. I think it's more harmful though to never request something you want than to request it repeatedly. So I'll have to say I'm really in the middle on this. While I think vain repetition is not necessary, God isn't prone to lose His temper as we are and therefore I think asking repeatedly doesn't hurt. It's just not necessary.

The fact is that God is supreme he does indeed answer our prayers the moment we pray them. Though we do not necessarily get the answers instantaneously is also absolutely true. What about our character development regarding patience and absolute trust?
Yes, we can pray about, or for anything for instance we pray, "God bless our food once for the rest of our lives", or "Cover our lives and everyone elses that exists with love, guidance, and protection." <---- See that I have prayed for YOU.
But, is that where you want your relationship and communication and growth with God to stop? I do not.
Praying or talking to God all the time is a personal relationship and should never cease. God honors this dependance upon Him and blesses us richly with ANYTHING our hearts desires - be CAREFUL what you pray for.
This prayer relationship is an interaction, reflection, meditation, and hope. Actions and answers follow. We grow to maturity in Him daily, and moment by moment, as well.
Choices we make effect how we pray, as well. Life among many things aside from ourselves can lead, or God can. In praying with Him daily you know more of His plan for you. You will know more of what to do in His plan the more you communicate with Him too.
I am these days praying and resting in Him. I pray that I am willing to do His will for my life more completely too. In Jesus' name I pray.

As a CAtholic I would say we should pray all the time. We pray before every meal, we pray after every meal. We pray for all our family every night. We pray for the sick, the poor, the aged, and the dying. We pray for the deceased. We pray for newly born. We pray the Rosary, a splendid pray to Mary to interceed for us to God in Heaven. She is the mother of Jesus, Mother of God, and He told us to pray to her and ask for her help.

God likes when we talk to Him.... what friend doesn't! I know God hears everything (even the things I'd rather not have Him hear!), but I think it is important to talk to him anyway. Hi All,
Although as a Christian we know that God knows our every need before we ask, He still wants us to continously pray. We are to be in a continual state of Thanksgiving for every aspect of our lives, therefore that alone would be one reason to continually pray. We are told to continually pray for the lost that they may come to the saving knowledge of Christ.
One prayer to cover all we will ever eat is not enough, God provides for us daily. Though we pray once for forgiveness of our sins and salvation in order to be saved and have eternal life, does not mean that we need not pray for forgiveness ever again. Because we all fall (sin) daily, we need to go to God daily and ask for forgiveness. To often we think that sin is only major behavior problems such as theft, murder, drugs, alcohol, sexual perversion. But sin is also that little lie you tell when you don't want to do something or that you tell for someone else. Its the anger you feel when someone cuts you off on the road. Its gossip and wasting time on the job, all things that many of us have done without thinking about it.

Man, I'm so excited to be posting again!! Ok just a warning, I'm probs going to be on the soap box, so please don't get mad. OK we talked a bunch about prayer tonight at youth group. It was our lesson for the week. And to be honest, I thought it would be kinda boring because it was just some of Apostle Paul's prayers (Ephesians 1:15-23; 3:14-21), but it was very interesting and I almost cried. I have really been neglecting my time with God, and my life has definitely been showing the effects of that. you lose your joy, your purpose, you kinda lose sight of Jesus and approach him as a stranger, unreachable. It's not fun to be out of touch for a while. SO I just want all of you to stick to it.
Also he is our father, and even if only out of respect and thankfulness for his eternal gift, we need to pay attention and communicate with him often. Hopefully out of love too, love reflected from His love. But if we don't talk to our family and friends for a while, we don't know what they want, how they are doing, etc. God has everything already planned, but we don't and we don't know what he has in store for us. We need to keep in prayer for our own sake, so we don't miss out on blessings and opportunities to witness.
Also we need to continue to pray for others, missionaries, friends, family, non-believers, believers, and esp. our enemies (which is def,. a weak spot for me). When we pray for others, it takes the focus off ourselves. And esp. if we read the Bible and God's will, we'll know how to pray, and hopefully will pray more often and with true conviction and passion.
Here's some things from our lesson:
Most of the prayers in the Bible are short and straight to the point. Peter prayed one of the shortest prayers "Lord save me" So our prayers don't have to be long, and just for taking up time, they need to be special and important.
"You can pray that your Christian friends will have...
1 understanding of what God is like and what He he has done for them.
2 assurance of salvation and of spending eternity with Christ
3 confidence that they're special to God and caluable to him
4 the strength God gives them to overcome temptation and serve him.
You can pray that...
1 the Holy Spirit would strengthen us to glorify God in all we do
2 Christ would feel at home in our lives as we trust Him more and live for him
3 We may understand the depth of God's love toward uis
4 we would experience the greatness of God and be more devoted to Him "
God bless!

Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I've been struggling with that question lately. I repeat my prayers because I think God will realize that I am persistent about it, like the persistent widow in the Gospels. I have also heard that being persistent shows a lack of faith. But, since the persistent widow is in the Bible, I think repeating prayers is okay.

Daniel prayed for one thing for 21 days. God answer was sent the first day of his prayer but it took 21 days of warring in the hevenlies before the messenger reached Daniel. Now perhaps if he had only prayed once and then forgot the messenger would never have reached him.....just a thought dont make a doctrine of it

I learned the way we pray has alot to do with our answers
1) Don't pray the same thing over and over once you have asked God for it stop asking and start thanking him for it. Asking again is just start the process over and over each time
2) You have to have the faith that he will answer your prayers. Faith without works is dead, also works without faith is dead, each time your praying your testing an increasing in yuour faith
3) Who do you have faith in? Yourself,God,Devil?
That will determine many things, if you want prayers asnwered it should be in God, He always answers our prayers when we use faith wether it's todaY OR THREE weeks from now, can't pray to God and be all fired up than after a little while you start to doubt
4) It's our way of talking to God you can just pray to him and tell him how your day went what happen both good and bad and just tell him that you love him with all of your heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit.
5) Why bother becuase it's worth it, why bother because he took him out of his schedule to come here on earth and die for you just so we would have a chance to get to Heaven, why becuase he is God.
6) I know this is more easier said than done but if he doesn't do anymore for us he has already done enough for him to wake you up, for him saving someone, for him sparing your life when it wassn't desevered for him keeping you from getting in an accident on the way to work, school,or church. For him watching and cover your family so they would be safe.:) May God Bless you all indeed as I know he will:)

God knows what is in our heart and hears our prayers without our speaking them.
However, He enjoys fellowshipping with us and delights when we take the time to talk to Him.
Consider your relationship with your earthly father. (I pray everyone had such a wonderful relationship with their father as I had with mine). He was always thrilled when I would come to him, tell him my problems and share all the wonderful things that had happened in my life. He also would always be there when I asked for something special. And he often granted those requests just because he loved me so very much.
Our heavenly Father is no different. His love for us cannot be compared to the love of any earthly father. He deserves our time spent in prayer and our love for Him in return.

Yes we should pray more than once. When Jesus prayed for the blind man and he could only see men as trees. The lord prayed again and his sight was restored! If Jesus prayed more than once then who are we?????? Yeah, pray, pray, pray.....

I believe you should keep praying for it.
When my step dad was sick I kept praying for him to be healed and I kept telling God that I knew He would heal him. God didn't heal him, but that's a different story. I pray every night for God to heal my mothers hands because she has Arthritis and is in a great deal of pain. I want Him to heal her and I hope that He will someday.
If you want something bad enough, keep praying for it and thanking Him.

I believe prayer brings us into a closer relationship with God. We need to pray with faith and conviction and really talk to God. Sometimes our prayers aren't answered but God knows what's best for us.

 When you pray, use one of the examples Christ Jesus Himself has given us in the garden of Gethsemane; "Oh My Father, if it is possible ... ." (Matthew 26:39 NKJV). Ask for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven, and then humbly ask that it may be His will that your prayer be granted, and ask if it is at all in His plan and design for you or for the person you are praying for that your prayer be answerred. God never wasts a hurt but sometimes allows us to be tested through one or more of the various means He has at His disposal.:amen:

Yes, we should pray continuously...God bless You All
Matthew 21:22 "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."
Mark 9:25-29 "When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again." The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?" He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."
1 Corinthians 7:5 "Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control."
Romans 12:12 "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."
James 5:13-16 "Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective."

I don't know why we need to pray more than once, but it seems that Jesus taught being persistent in prayer. I think it is okay to pray for something more than once. Could it be a sign of a lack of faith? Sure, it could.

Prayer changes things. It is our time to talk to God and to learn His voice. Don't you know those best whom you talk with. It is about communion and fellowship with Him.
It is also a time of praise and thanksgiving. Prayers have caused God to change His Mind (it is His character that never changes), look at Moses and others.
It also allows for us to "cast our cares". The spoken word is so powerful, these are reasons why we need to pray and to be careful of the words we speak.

Jesus compared himself to the bridegroom many times.
Communication with God is how we come to know Him (He already knows us). Do you say Good Morning just once to your spouse, or I love you only at the Wedding?
If not then Speak to God more often than anyone else---After all He should be first, and deserves more of your time, communication than any "other being".

I voted not sure.
I guess it depends on the prayer request, but I kind of feel that praying continously about something is fine.
