And if you ever find yourself in Athen, GA, Home of the DAWGS!, do drop in for worship. We'd love to show you some good ole Southern Hospitality--Lutheran Style!

Any chance I get to promo my church's site :D www.bethelevlutheran.org (http://www.bethelevlutheran.org/).
Anyways, I'll also post some pictures, I don't want to reformat a bunch of times so I'll go into my cache and see what I can pull out on short notice. My church is no where near the beauty of that wonderful Gothic church ChiRho posted by mine has a quaint Norman (Romanesque) feel.

Wow James,
You have tons of pics of your church! My church really needs to get better pics! The interior ones are from 1999 when we were building it. The altar isn't even finished yet!!! I love the stained class in my church, I am thinking about having the youth pastor from my Missionary church come to my Lutheran church when I get married!!! (The youth pastor has been in everyone of my siblings weddings so I gotta keep it going!)

I just feel really wierd taking pictures of a church.
I can so relate to this. When I took over as webmaster I very naively thought people would automatically send me pictures so I could post them on the website--not so. For Mother's Day this year my husband got me a little digital camera I could keep in my purse so I would always be ready to snap a picture. One night I decided to take pictures of our Wednesday evening group. I asked my pastor if I could get a picture of him preaching and he said sure because the Wednesday night teaching is actually expository in form rather than preaching. I cleared it with all the attendees first but when the time came, I turned on the camera and just couldn't snap the shot!
Some may not agree with what I am going to say but I am going to say it anyway. I had an opportunity to see St. Marc's church in Venice...it caused me to change my thinking a bit. It took 400 years to build that church! It is indeed a fitting church (as fitting as possible for human hands to construct) for the God of the Universe. I used to think it didn't matter where one gathered for worship and in essence I still see things that way BUT I also think the God of the Universe, the God who sent His Son to atone for our grievious sins against Him, so that we may enjoy eternity with Him, deserves our best. Modern churchs sometimes fall short in this.
I love pictures of your church, James. Old churches are so beautiful. The beauty of ChiRho's church takes my breath away.
Peace
Rose

Rose,
I had to show you St. Paul's. It is the oldest church in Fort Wayne (pre dates the Synod). This is where the Reformation Celebration (Oct. 31) was last year- complete with orchestra playing strictly sixteenth century music! You should see the pews....they are something like 100 years old...hand carved and old!
http://www.stpaulsfw.org/images/churchlg.jpg
they dont have an altar pics on their site....but I will get some
Oh! I almost forgot...She stands opposite of the cities most celebrated Roman church! They dont compare. Immaculate Conception Cathedral has two towers (not nearly as tall), but looks weak when you gaze upon St. Paul's! I just wish that the Lutheranism was better inside. :(

(These are some Fresno Churches, beautiful in their own respect and historic (that is for Fresno) ) One is Catholic (St. John's Cathedral, I go to Mass there on Saturdays), another that was Lutheran when built and yet another which is Armenian.

Also, go to www.bethelevlutheran.org (http://www.bethelevlutheran.org) click on the links, and the first section of links are Fresno ELCA churches, none that are historic, but some interesting modern concepts: ex; Good Shepherd Lutheran is a big Tent Church, permanent walls but the ceiling is a tent. Hope Lutheran is made in a Hexagon. Trinity is pretty blan but the interior is awesome. Grace, doesn't have pictures but it is a small country church and much much more...

This link is for Bethlehem Lutheran Church which is our sister church in STL's north side. We have different projects going to help the church and the area around it (not one of the safest neighborhoods to be in) It's also one of the few African-American Lutheran churches around. Their choir sings in our church many times each year. They write many of their own songs.

How many of you listen to Issues Etc. on KFUO? I know it is a St. Louis, MO local station but they have a website and you can listen via the Internet everday between 3 and 6 pm CDT/CST. It is one of the best programs for Lutherans and it has a variety of great issues that they do on a daily basis. Really helps to develop your christian worldview as well.

This is the church I went to growing up, I wish I could find pictures of the interior. The first church was built in 1772, the present one was built in 1885. It is a lot more historic then the one I go to now which was completed in 1999.

Being from Indiana, I thought I might post the most recognizable religious icon that we have. This Golden Dome rests in the center of the campus of the famed University of Notre Dame. Although it is not a church, it certainly is a perfect representation of Roman Catholicism. Thats right folks, that isnt Jesus atop that Golden Dome. You are correct...it is Mary! Once again, God strengthen's my grip on this most true Lutheran faith!

I would expect so because "Notre Dame" means "Our Lady" in French. Ex: Notre Dame de Paris, "Our Lady of Paris", Notre Dame de Reims, "Our Lady of Reims".

If we are going to talk about Catholic Buildings (in a nice way ;) ), I have to share my personal favorite: The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, which is where I was confirmed. It has some of the most beautiful Byzantine style Mosaic art in the United States. Here is a Virtual tour courtesy of their website: http://www.cathedralstl.org/tourism/tour.html The pics do not do the place justice, you have to go there.
Lately, the wine tasting club my husband and I are in were having "meetings" in the cathedral gym.

Here's my own sketch of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Modesto, CA. At least if the picture shows up, I've never posted one here before.
It's the church I grew up in, and the one I attend whenever I'm home (as now) Founded by a group of Stalwart Swedes about 90 years ago, it was the first Lutheran church in the town of Modesto. The sanctuary was built entirely with the donations and labor of the original members. The architectural style seems to be half german, and half spanish mission... There are now two new buildings of modern style nearby.
As for my current church, the Lutheran church in Durango hurt me deeply, so I've been going to the services at the non-denominational chapel on campus, which I can't seem to find any pictures of and am hundreds of miles away from at the moment. It's really pretty- small and simple, almost all windows. It is sitting on the edge of a plateau with the whole town of Durango stretched below and 10,000 ft mountain peaks behind, wreathed in snow and aspens. The only solid wall, brick, faces the campus itself, so I feel very close to god and nature when I am there. I'll try and find a picture later if I can.

Here's the window behind our altar:

I don't have any other good pictures of the exterior or the exterior (the design was limited by the lot, so it's not as pretty as other churches, but the exterior doesn't matter, the doctrine taught on the inside is what's important!!!), but we have stained glass windows for all the apostles to the left of the altar window...

Absolutely wonderful! It reminds me of our church in Iowa...that too had an ornate altar and awesome architecture...although yours is far more exquisite.
I believe our church in Iowa was built in 1898 or something but unfortunately, St. Paul's was destroyed by arson in 1999. :( My son's confirmation class was the last one held in that beautiful church.
We were talking before bible study the other night about the incredibly beautiful churches in the UK and Europe and how only a small percentatge of the population actually worship in them anymore. It's such a shame.
