This is probably a really silly question, but then i've never been one to shy away from those!

I've just been been browsing on wikipedia and somehow came across the definition for 'sunday roast'. There it said that roast dinners are really only the preserve the British and Irish dinner tables after Church on Sundays.

It never even occured to me that a roast wasn't the standard sunday food in American, Oz or Canada and i really can't imagine what else you'd eat after Church.

So come on then, what's the story?!

No idea. Here in Cyprus I still produce a sunday roast every week. Mainly because it's easier for me to make one from scratch than to have to rescue my mum's or dad's since they never manage to get the entire meal all together at the same time.

In the States, after church, we go to brunch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunch). :sorry:

Ummm ... Breakfast? Usually a nice big one, with strawberries and pancakes, or eggs benedict?
Or, Dim Sum -- that makes a nice breakfast.

Dean's family always went to a restaurant for lunch, but then they aren't Catholic and don't have the Eucharist and never heard of fasting before church, so they would have already had their breakfast. Given that our regular congregation doesn't have weekly Eucharist either, we've pretty much adopted the same custom for the last decade or so.

Roast maybe in the evening, but just as likely a lasagna or rouladen or jambalaya.

I hardly ever make a Sunday roast here in the UK - probably my upbringing. Here we come home from church and have sandwiches and/or soup.

Sunday roasts are awesome. Of course, they are normally three hours after church, round about 1:30...

We never did get the fuss about thanksgiving and christmas meals in the USA, since they weren't much more than a glorified sunday roast...

Church ends at noon or so, and our coffee hours have gotten so elaborate many people make them into lunch.

since I generally fast Communion its lunch for us...

sometimes roast...since you can throw the roast...with some onion, carrot, and potatos in the crock pot and it will be ready by the time we get back from Church...or sometime it's fried chicken or BBQ...

What time do you start church? Ours starts at 11:00 AM and I can't wait that long to eat. :sorry:

Do you fast before communion? That's what I get too hungry to do. So we eat breakfast before church. If we were done by 11 I could probably do it, but my kids couldn't. :)

Since my 10 year old is giving up meat for lent we have been making sure to have meat on Sundays for him since it's his only day. THis thread has reminded me that we need to do a roast! Perfect.

I fast as before communion as much as my blood sugar allows. Our service is 11am-12pm. We however have our sunday roast in the evening.

Yesterday I made....

Roast chicken with stuffing balls
Broccolli
Cauliflower
Carrots
Roast and mashed potato
Gravy

And for dessert we had homemade rhubarb crumble and custard. I had everything but the chicken and it was lovely even though I do say so my self.

Wow, that sounds delicious! What are stuffing balls?

You know when you use a stuffing mix to stuff a chicken? We roll it into balls and bake it instead.

Hope that makes sense

Oh, I see! Sounds good. How do you cook the vegetables? I have a friend whose mother is from England and I seem to remember that she cooked carrots in milk.

I have never heard of boiling in milk....... I boil them in water and then use the water they boiled in to make the gravy.
