It depends.

Some people see and do it the same as a regular church just performed in someone's home. (ie Pastors, deacons, offerings, music, etc)

Some people attempt to emulate what they see as a more true/pure form as laid out in Acts. They have no formalized leadership, more organic worship, etc.

There are house churches that are just downsized churches. There are house churches of self righteous (all the churches are wrong) members. There are house churches with loving, caring, committed Christians. There are house churches of judgmental bigots. There are house churches of committed Christians who are willing to experiment in order to deepen their lives and present a demonstrable lifestyle of Christ-likeness.

In other words, a similar scene to what already exists in many Christian churches. But issues of personal relevance, relationships and concerns over leadership and denominational; structures are major motivators for many to try smaller groups.
