We have been discussing The Dancing Saints Icon (http://www.saintgregorys.org/Icons/Sept2001/index.html) over in TAW, and we would like to know what you guys think of it.

In particular, we are interested in the inclusion of Malcolm X, Mohandas Gandhi, Rumi (Sufi poet), Su Shi (Pagan Chinese poet), Abraham Joshus Heschel (Jewish theologian), and other non-Christians.

Perhaps it is a representation of some countries' leading figures?
For example, I can spot Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare.
But who is the brown splodge supposed to be (East view, lower left-hand corner)?
And I spy a Bear, Wolf and a Tiger.
Strange...

Personally i'm against them, and i've been reading a few articles about this church and i'm suprised it's even allowed to remain in the Anglican communion. You should have a look at the article in TAW- my responce is over there

I also posted over there. I think the Dancing Saints thing is supposed to be inclusive -- reaching across faith traditions. I'm not at all comfortable with many of the choices.

FWIW, the Episcopal Church's calendar (http://satucket.com/lectionary/Calendar.htm), with links to biographies by an Anglican hagiographer and the propers for the people we recognize as "saints on the calendar."

The tiger accompanies Francis of Assisi. The bear accompanies St Seraphim of Sarov. The tiger accompanies Saadi, a Persian poet. To me, the presence of the animals is useful in that it helps identify the person portrayed in the icon.

I must admit, I'm having problems identifying all the figures. This is quite embarassing of me to say, since I've just recently received my BA in history! :(

Might anyone help with a "roadmap?" :help:
