View Full Version : A Calling?

Well I'm not sure but it might be.

See, as a little kid I always loved to write. I love writing poems and stories. As I got older, I decided I wanted to be a journalist and write for some type of print organization, like a newspaper or magazine.

I really want to do this, but here is the thing..

God might want me to do something else..

See it happened a few months ago. I was just doing some things and suddenly it hit me..

I suddenly had a strong urge to become a youth leader for High School kids at my church.

As time grew on the urge felt stronger, now I don't know what to do. I so want to acomplish my dream of being a professional writer/journalist, but at the same time, I feel a strange urge to be a youth leader as well.

What do you guys think? You think me suddenly having the urge to be a youth leader for a high school youth group, be concidered a calling? I'm not sure, but I thought I might ask you guys.

If it is, what should I do about my writing career? Can I still do both? If I am to become a youth leader, it will be for my Lutheran church (because we are shorthanded youth leaders to begin with) and it will probably be for high school kids.

Also, if it is a calling, why do you think God wants me to do this? First off, I have no social skills what so ever, I'm not very good at doing things in front of people in other words, It's very hard for me to come up with prayers off the top of my head, and I know bearly nothing about what it takes to be a leader and what you need to do. I have no experience. I do in writing, but not in this.

I know this is a lot of questions, but what do you all think? Can anyone lend me some advice?

Being a youth leader is no small task that is for sure. It is something that is a very serious commitment. But if you feel drawn to such service then I would suggest you pursue it.

If God has given you a talent for writing then I would not worry, he will give you the oppotunity to use that talent in a godly way. It may be that you will end up writing or starting something like a youth magazine or similar project.

In the end you must follow what you believe to be the path that God wants you to go down. Through prayer and talking with Godly people, like Pastors, you can usually discover what this is. I say usually because leaps of faith are quite common.

As for the why God may want you to go into youth leadership: You say you have poor social skills. When we are weak God can be strong. It is in our weakness' that God's power is most evident to us. Rely not on your own skills and abilities, but trust that God will provide you with what you need when you need it.

In the end, talk to your Pastor about what you are feeling. Have a good long talk and pray, then decide. Many people go into Youth work with ambitions and pre-conceived idea's about what it is and find that it is the exact opposite.

I hope that all will become clear to you sooner rather than later. God's Blessings.

Well, my pastor once told me, "When God really wants you to do something, it barely matters whether you say yes or no, cuz He'll get you in the end."

But in terms of serious advice; Only you can really know whether you're really being called to do this. But I will say that few jobs have ever given me so much joy as when I was teaching Sunday School at my church. I think I learned a good deal more than the kids! Helping others grow in faith is one of the most rewarding feelings there is.

I speak this as one with his own Calling...

No matter how much I fight it, with all my humanness and longing to be "OF" this world, instead of "in the world but not of it"...the Calling never stops. Its a nagging pressure in your every thought. Your every desire. It forces you like an invisible hand, even when the child in you screams for it to stop.

God doesn't mince words or feelings. When he tells you to do something, you know it. You can't avoid it. You can't hide from it.

That very hand has changed my life, the direction it was going, and what I am charged with doing now.

Thats when you know God is giving you this Calling. Do what so many of us can't do...don't hide from it, don;'t fight it. In the better words of many Nike commercials..."Just Do It"

Honestly I would take a look at Titus and James 3. I think that both of these will help you out as to all the roles in the church.

I want to work with the junior highers at mu church but no way would I go on staff or ever give up my day job.

Hmmm,

How about writing and publishing a Lutheran Teen Magazine?

Actually Pheobe that's what I was thinking about doing. Then I could devote time to God and make my writer career dream come true. :)

But I dunno who I would write for.. Any ideas? I've never really seen a Lutheran teen maginzine.

Unless.. I start one myself.. Hmm..

I don't know that it is for Lutheran's only but...

I've seen Devo- zine. It's published by The Upper Room.

You may be able to write articles for Lutheran Digest or The Lutheran.
I'll try to get back to you with a web address for Devo- zine.

I think he was wondering what happened to her. According to her Find All Posts, she hasn't been on the forums for about 6 months.
