Amish and mennonites love shoo-fly pie, which is a very sweet molasses and brown sugar concoction poured into a pie shell. I can eat a tiny sliver, then my mouth begins to rebel and I can't eat anymore.

I assume you looked at the first page of this thread? Try the recipe!
It's easy to make. You can use an unbaked pie crust purchased at the market, if you like. My mom says Pillsbury is the best. She's a caterer, and this is one of her few shortcuts, but she won't use any other brand.

I think Brits use some different vocabulary in cooking than Americans. I'm trying to remember for sure what "short pastry" means. I think it's similar to American pie crust, but made with butter. If so, this should work just fine.
For American pie crust, you cut some shortening or lard into flour and salt, add a little cold water until it holds together. Sometimes there are a few other ingredients, like the liquid can contain an egg and some vinegar.

I think it's similar to American pie crust, but made with butter. If so, this should work just fine.It is, more or less - short is tart (pie) base, flaky is what you'd use for like croissants , Danishes, pies (like Steak & Kidney).
So, about those pick-up lines:
Man: drops to knees & crawls around woman looking for something on floor
Woman: Excuse me, what are you looking for?
Man: That stunning smile that fell from your face, so I can take it home & treasure it...in the hope you'll use it again soon...

It is, more or less - short is tart (pie) base, flaky is what you'd use for like croissants , Danishes, pies (like Steak & Kidney).
So you're saying that to Brits all pastry is either "short" or "flaky"? Does that mean, for example, that you would use the exact same flaky pastry for croissants as for Napoleons? These are quite different because one has yeast and the other doesn't, no?
And for the "short" variety, little molded tarts usually use a pastry that is almost closer to a sugar cookie than to a pie crust. A Brit would only have one recipe for short pastry?
Or do you just mean a wide variety of pastries can be divided into two categories?

I see people with all kinds of "stuff" and I wonder why. It would be fun to learn why people wear the items they have.
I have 2 items that were given to me - the rose and the Vine's. I think they were gifts of kindness. One was anonymous, so I don't know who gave it to me, and can only guess why. I tend to get into some pretty heavy discussions of hermeneutics, so I assume someone gave me the Vine's because of that. Whoever it was, if you're here, Thank You!
The ice cream cone is the only thing I bought for myself. There is a group of people around here who carry ice cream cones, so it's sort of like a secret badge. We never say openly on the boards what it stands for, so it's kind of mysterious.
I know some of the other items (like the candle) are badges for other groups on CF.
Tell us about the stuff you wear. Why do you wear each item?

I have the Light Sword because I use light to peirce through arguements of darkness. I have the Shield of Peace as I try to bring peace through truth. The Spiritual Belt keeps all of my armor in check. I wear the Crown of Kings because I am one. The Holy Robe is a sign to others that I am under the protection and guidance of Jesus, and my Ice Boots symbolize my Antarctic background.
As for my other items, I use the Orthodox Bible, which has books that the Protestants took out, because there is more information. I have The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chysostom because that is the main litugy I use. And, I have an Orthodox Cross, well, because I'm Orthodox :)

This is my first visit to this thread but it looks interesting. Looks like food is the current topic. I noticed the first post (like way, way long time ago) said to come to the barn raising for some shoo-fly pie. Is there any left yet? My son and his girlfriend gave me the cutest little coffeebean grinder and a wonderful bag of hazlenut coffeebeans for my birthday yesterday. So if the rest of you will share a slice of shoo-fly pie with me I'll share some of my hazlenut coffee with you. (By the way, what is shoo-fly pie?)

Reilly's Pub in OBOB is open to non-Christians and so is the Open Cafe in WWMC. It seems that staff is willing to open any Congregation's cafe/pub/fellowship thread to non-Christians if the Congregation wants to invite them. This thread (http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?p=11208403#post11208403) in Forum Questions is asking, and specifically mentioned The Barnraising.
What do y'all think? Would you like to open this thread to non-Christians.

I finally got around to researching what a barn raising is.
Awesome concept!
Wikipedia - Barn raising (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barn_raising)
A barn raising is a one- or two-day event during which a community comes together to assemble a barn for one of its households. A certain amount of preparation is done beforehand. Lumber and hardware are laid in, plans are made, ground is cleared, and tradesmen are hired.
Materials are purchased or traded for by the family who will own the barn once it is complete.
Generally, participation is mandatory for community members. These participants are not paid. All able-bodied members of the community are expected to attend. Failure to attend a barn raising without the best of reasons leads to censure within the community. Some specialists brought in from other communities for direction or joinery may be paid, however.

Having lived in major cities all my life, and attending churches and schools that are full of urbanites like me, we have little use for barns. ;) All our houses are built by contractors.
Although we did include large segments of our community in things like moving, painting and regrading the backyard in our move to a new house this year. Food and fellowship is always involved. :)
