Hi, I haven't been here before, and I'd like to know what the difference is between a ....fundamentalist Christian....and a....conservative one ?

A conservative (IMO) is one who grounds themselves on traditional Christian beliefs and morals.

Fundamentals as a rule of thumb would most likely be conservatives as would most members of certain denominations such as Baptists and calvinists.

But some also take the meaning of conservative from a strictly political POV. That is okay too, I suppose but some people who identify as being liberal in politics also identify as being conservative in their religious views.

Oh...thank you for your reply to my question...I'm just really curious that's all. I notice now there are sites here for....Conservatives, Liberals, Fundies, and even Moderate Christians....and let's not forget all the denominations.....oh so many.....can't say the forum is dull.

Hello Annie,

The easiest way to tell the difference is in how we define ourselves. The definition of fundamentalists can be found here (http://christianforums.com/t6397447-guidelines-for-the-fundamentalist-forum.html) and the conservative christian definition / statement of faith is here (http://christianforums.com/t6377207-cc-statement-of-faith-and-guidelines.html). As you can see they are very similar. There are quite a few fundamentalists who also post in this forum, so you might enjoy both of them.

Hi, I believe that the borders between so-called fundamentalists and conservatives sometimes run quite fluent. It's difficult to state a list of absolute differences (or similarities) as these terms are more or less tool-terms rather than definitions. For my self, I'd consider myself to be a conservative Christian (with regard to how I read the Bible). This does however also mean that certain aspects of how I read most parts of the Bible would also make me a fundamentalist.

Basically, from the word it self, fundamentalist should point to someone who emphasizes the foundation, the concrete meaning of something. With regard to reading the Bible. I'd, however, like to add that many conservative Christians who read the prophecies of the OT (and them being mentioned and fulfilled in the NT) would still - how fundamentalist they may be - be able to comprehend that there's a lot of symbolism in passages such as prophecies etc. Does this mean that most conservative Christians aren't fundamentalists? Or would it mean that most fundamentalists are largely uncapable of spotting obvious symbolism in the Biblical text? No, of course not, and this is what makes the terms a little difficult if you want to create sharp borders between them.
