How do Lutherans commemorate these 2 days? I am from a nondenominational background, and we never even mentioned them! lol
I have no notion of what goes on, other than my Catholic friends come to work with a cross of ash on their foreheads.
They are coming up soon, and I want to be ready!

I look forward to it. I think our church may have a dinner and special service for Ash Wednesday, but I don't know if Shrove Tuesday will be celebrated.

my church does nothing for shrove tuesday -- we have a soup supper and church service on ash wednesday (evening) -- we do this every wednesday during lent....
at my church we do not do the ashes -- some Lutheran churches do, some do not...just ask at the church you are attending

Does the Lutheran Church encourage fasting or giving something up during lent like the Romish Church does?

That's a personal preference. Some folks will give up something for the 40 days, while others may take on some project to do, or maybe do something special for Lent.

Most churches around here do both Mardi Gras (we also speak french up here) and Ash Wednesday. Usually on Mardi Gras we serve pancakes and sausages cooked by the youth. I think its a Canadian thing because of love of Maple Syrup on pancakes.
For Ash Wednesday we burn the palms branches from the previous Palm/Passion Sunday to make the ashes.
As far as giving something up for Lent, its a personal choice. Lots of women like giving up chocolate. for some reason Being single, I often joke about giving up Abstinence for Lent. I invariably fail miserably at this, which I think is a very Lutheran way of recognizing my fallibility. ;)

Pancake suppers are a traditional activity for many churches on Shrove Tuesday.
