Hey everyone,
I can not believe this, I was dumbfounded when I heard that other denominations sang "A Mighty Fortress" since it is a Luther piece, but then when I heard and saw it in the "Mormon Hymn Book" I shuddered! They ruined it too!!! They put it in the Key of D (should be C) and they changed the words over so slightly
"A Mighty Fortress is our God, a tower of strength never ceasing"
ERRRRRRRR!!!! I'm mad!!!
In Christian Anger,

Dont be so foolish. So what if other people use your songs? No one but one with excessive pride can say that their denomination or church is an any way perfect. If anyone when around beating on people for trying to be more Christian, that would be the most un Christian act of them all

Mormans are not Christian, they are at best heretics.

Having grown up Baptist, we sang "A Mighty Fortress" a lot (with the correct wording ;) ).
I personally consider Mormons mislead heretics but I won't dare call them un-Christian, so it really doesn't bother me personally if they are using a traditional, orthodox hymn.

Well, my mother thinks reading Lord of the Rings will encourage children to use magic and worship Gandalf. By the same logic, perhaps singing "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" will cause non-lutherans to start eating lutefisk and preaching salvation by grace! :)

That made me giggle!
It just seems so weird! They can at least have the audacity to use the correct wording! Another thing that I thought was weird is that Mormon's like Lutheran's they thought that Martin Luther was on the right track but not quite there, so they have Joseph Smith! (Although if you look at it we are sorta similar)

Yeah, I know that Baptists and Methodists sing it, but Mormons that is a cult, not a Christian church. I dont care if other denominations sing it, but sing it correctly please!!!

I dont care if other denominations sing it, but sing it correctly please!!!I agree!
Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott,
Ein gute Wehr und Waffen;
Er hilft uns frei aus aller Not,
Die uns jetzt hat betroffen.
Der alt’ böse Feind,
Mit Ernst er’s jetzt meint,
Gross’ Macht und viel List
Sein’ grausam’ Ruestung ist,
Auf Erd’ ist nicht seingleichen.
Mit unsrer Macht is nichts getan,
Wir sind gar bald verloren;
Und kein’n Dank dazu haben;
Er ist bei uns wohl auf dem Plan
Mit seinem Geist und Gaben.
Nehmen sie den Leib,
Gut, Ehr’, Kind und Weib:
Lass fahren dahin,
Sie haben’s kein’n Gewinn,
Das Reich muss uns doch bleiben.

Well, to put my previous comment in more serious context, do you recall the story of a man who claimed to be Jesus, and was preaching his message and healing the blind and so forth? The disciples wanted to do something nasty to him, but the Lord forbade them to, instructing them instead to better teach him in the way and let him continue his work. The word of god is not ours to keep, like an elitist club. We are meant to share it, as often and wholeheartedly as possible. That means that if someone is singing a Christian song like "Mighty Fortress", I don't think it's our place to stop them, even if they are doing it wrong.;) Just my two cents!
Oh, and Mormonism isn't exactly a cult, just a severely misguided religion.

I grew up Methodist, and had never been to a non-UMC church until well into college. When I did, I was really suprised. They (this was actually a Lutheran church) sang all of our hymns! Every other song was by Wesley. I don't know why, I just assumed every church had their own hymns, I mean they have their own hymnals.
Anyway, don't really have to worry about that now. I don't forsee ever walking into a Protestant church and thinking "Oh wow, that's Obikhod tone 8 they are singing."

LOL Good one Lex. And if it makes anyone more comfortable, We EAstern Orthodox do not use "A Mighty Fortress" though the Methodist church I grew up in did, hmmmm.... :scratch:

Yes, but with inferior Ukranian tones, not the original Russian tones which were used by the Apostles ;)

Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott,
Ein gute Wehr und Waffen;...
Oh; wait, I don't speak German! ;)
Begins to sing again...
A mighty fortress is our God, a trusty shield and weapon;
He helps us free from every need that hath us now overtaken.
The old evil foe now means deadly woe; deep guile and great might
Are his dread arms in fight; on Earth is not his equal.
With might of ours can naught be done, soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the Valiant One, Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is.
Of Sabbath Lord, and there’s none other God;
He holds the field victorious.
Though devils all the world should fill, all eager to devour us.
We tremble not, unmoved we stand, they shall not overpower us.
This world’s prince may still scowl fierce as he will,
He can harm us none, he’s judged; the deed is done;
One little word can fell him.
The Word they still shall let remain nor any thanks have for it;
He’s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit.
And take they our life, goods, fame, child and wife,
Let these all be gone, they yet have nothing won;
God's Kingdom ours remaineth.
Not what you went either? Ok; What do you want?
(Just trying to show that insisting on one English version of a German hymn doesn't make a lot of sense... and to give Monica a hard time ;) )

Mormon's thought Luther was on the right track? They are so far from Luther that he would not have given them the time of day for any discussion.
Lutherans consider the Mormon church to be a cult as they do JWs, The Way International and the Moonies.

Mormonism is not just a misguided religion. By Lutheran standards they are a cult. Their preaching is pure heresy.
