Aha, so the desert even with the snakes, spiders, scorpions, cacti, vast openness and stinging bushes is still safer? I knew it!!!

Having lived in the desert for 8 years now, I've seen one snake, no spiders of the "big" kind, things like Wolf spiders, Black Widows, Tarantulas, Brown Recluses, etc. I've seen about 100 scorpions, most of which were in my first apartment which was infested with the little beasties. The numerous cacti aren't dangerous unless you lean back into one. I actually saw a girl at ASU (Arizona State University) do that very thing. She just wasn't thinking, someone was taking her picture and she leaned back, right into a Saguaro cactus, my wife and I were both like "nooooo!" and everything went into slow motion, but there was nothing we could except wince in pain for her.

The other type of cactus that's "dangerous" is the one that jumps onto you as you walk by. It shoots little balls off of itself and sticks to you. Steve Irwin, got nailed by one when he visited Arizona one time. The last type of cactus that is dangerous is the one you crash into in your car. The vastness of the desert is disappearing. It's really getting developed and turned into businesses and residential homes at an alarming rate. So the vastness is slowly disappearing.

I visited someone in Scotsdale and they had one in their yard that was over 100 years old. They had installed some supports to help keep it up.

There was also a woody center from another cactus. I think it looked like a bush. Anyway I took the center and made a walking cane out of it. Unfortunately I left it out in AZ when I came back.

Oh yeah, I believe it too. The Saguaro doesn't even begin to sprout "arms" until they are 50 years old. My parents had to cut one of the arms off of theirs recently.

They had installed some supports to help keep it up.

Yeah, my wife and I had to do something similar to that a couple of years ago with our Ocotillo cactus. It had blown over due to a monsoon storm. We thought it was dead, but we propped it up and tied it to a nearby stop sign and it's still alive and green! LOL They're really amazing plants.

Oh, man that's too bad you left it here. But yeah, a cactus is mostly water but they are wood on the inside. I see alot of cactus wood out in the desert.

Ok, someone asked me who the pic was a few pages back when I was scoring Filo's fall (as a way to get him to laugh at his circumstances). I originally had a cartoon in there, but there was a HUGE copyright across it so I had to change it and this was the first pic I found...I have NO idea who those people are. I just found them on Google Images.

Filo, hope you're not hurting worse today!!!

Howdy, everyone. Thanks for the offers of healing meds... unfortunately I am not a tea or coffee drinker.

My head, arm, and upper shin on the right side hurt worse today - as expected. Advil and I are getting to be friendly. :)

But at least I can be up and around, working as needed (working from home has advantages!). A month from today will be my last day at the secular job (got a five month severance package!). Then April 1, I start full time for AALC. I begin visiting all our regions from April 1 to April 27. Willie Nelson and I will be "on the road again"! But I am so looking forward to full time work for the church body.

That sounds so cool! I bet they'd have one at NPH. I may have to buy one. I'm assuming it has archaeological studies/finds noted next to where they occur in scripture? That would be such a useful resource..especially in some of the forums around here..

I remember the first time I had buffalo wings years ago and I couldn't stop eating them. The people I was with thought I was nuts. After I finished the wings I drank the leftover hot sauce in the bowl. I just couldn't get enough. It was the sloppiest, most delicious experience. I had a red ring around my mouth from acid burn.

I don't like electric can openers....to me, they are gross. The reason I have 2 can openers is this- I bought a second one at a friend's kitchen party. It was cool looking. The reason I looked there was because my cleaning lady had been there and the counter is right next to the trash can. I once threw out my engagement ring. I was cleaning up my bedside table drawer where I keep the box with the wedding band. I had put the engagement ring in there 'cause we were going to have it checked later that day and I needed to take the band too.

I was chatting on the phone and must have put the box in the trash. Took all the trash out to the curb and about an hour later went to grab the box to put it in my purse and it was gone! I caught the garbage just in time as the truck was 6 houses away from mine.

Lambie,

I just took boneless chicken breasts and grilled them on my foreman grill, boiled up some spaghetti and drained it, added some butter (to taste) and some lowery's garlic salt and then steamed some asparagus and tossed it in the pasta.

I'm a simple cook. :D

Does that kind open all cans for you? I bought one once, and I don't know if it wore out, or if it's just certain cans, but it wouldn't open sauerkraut cans, and then it started giving me trouble with canned chicken cans. I threw it away and went back to the 'old fashioned' kind.

Well, Rad, what do you expect in the kitchen?

I love to cook my pasta sauce from scratch. White or red, doesn't matter. I especially like making Spagetti sauce though. Mine takes around six to seven hours to make. Then I put it into the fridge overnight. Don't ask me why, but it seems to make it better that way. People are always surprised at my sauce though. It has chunks of Bell Peppers, tomatoes, onion, olives, mushrooms and meat of course. It's kinda like a stew in a tomatoe sauce base, really.

Using a white sauce, I like to add baby carrots and sometimes peas, for french country chicken. That was my mother's favourite. I haven't made it in years.

We knew an Italian cook many years ago and she invited us to her house for a taste experience. I don't remember every thing that she cooked but she asked us an odd question. She wanted to know if we wanted it served traditional Italian style. Then she explained that traditionally it was not served on plates but dumped in the middle of the table. Does the food get dumped directly on the table, or is it on a platter or big bowl or something? It sounds like it would be a real mess to clean up the table after the meal was over.

Seajoy, did you get your special lamp yet? I heard on the radio this morning that 74% of northern latitude adults are Vitamin D deficient by February, due to lack of sunshine, leading to immune deficiencies among other things. They said that rickets in children are making a comeback. No wonder my mother always bundled us up and sent us outside every day for fresh air. (She dressed us in my dad's worn out insulated coveralls, with the legs cut off at the knees. They were gray so she called them our baby elephant suits.) My husband has switched a lot of our light bulbs to the "daylight" type of compact flourescents. They make a world of difference at our house.

No, my light hasn't come yet. They don't ship it until 12 days after it's ordered. It's probably from a southern state, where they are basking in the sun instead of sending me my light!
God has blessed me with many days of sunshine as of late. Tuesday, it was all cloudy though, and I found myself blubbering like a baby again. Amazing what "light" does for us. :)

Maybe they were depressed and just couldn't get out of bed to send it. Or maybe the ship from China was behind. Inventory control is a big problem with seasonal demand items and I would guess the orders are flying in right now, it's right about the time of year where so many get so bad that they've gone to the doctor and gotten diagnosed and then ordered. I would bet you could plot the weather by their sales with about a 10 day lag.

Anyway the vitamin D deficiency is a big thing.

A Caucasian needs about 1/4 the time of exposure to sunlight that would turn the skin pink on a very regular basis to avoid vitamin D deficiency without supplements.

Negroes commonly need 5 to 10 times longer exposure. You can bet right now today the incidence of vitamin D deficiency among dark skinned Negroes in a northern city like say Chicago or Detroit among those not taking supplements is probably approaching 100 percent.

This is seriously implicated in a few health problems. Depression, osteoporosis, myopathy, hypertension, influenza, chronic pain, heart disease, thyroid problems, autoimmune diseases, and some others too. Usually due to the seasonal exposure people don't develop full blown rickets in the US, but it's common among those Muslim women who completely cover up before going out. It's acutally an unusual woman in those groups who is not vitamin D deficient.

And this deficiency and resulting depression actually causes people to do all sorts of things.

Like spring break in the south where you run around mostly naked and feel better than you have sitting in class in months. Or the winter vacation in the south for the same reason. Go to the tanning salon because you feel so good. And so on. Like most things people will overdo it. You don't really need to tan. Tanning actually increases the exposure needed. And tanning beds focus on the wrong type of UV light. For vitamin D you need UVB for tanning you need UVA. Tanning beds give off some UVA but you get a relatively high dosage of UVB.

A white skinned person needs about 20 minutes of exposure of their arms and face a day.

I'm not a big pill person, but most people really should take a couple of the combined calcium-vitamin D pill a day during the winter. We'd be a happier society if we did.

The SADD lights aren't really designed to give you the vitamin D production. You can get Vitamin D lights too.

The whole thing is, it's a fairly simple test to test the vitamin D level in the blood, but it's very seldom done. I would almost bet money that the SADD light was prescribed without even testing the level of vitamin D. Lack of sunlight produces both, presence of one doesn't exclude the other. But you can sit in front of a SADD light until the cows come home and if your problem is also a vitamin D deficiency, it won't be totally effective.

Sorry, about the rant. Just one of those things I've learned about over the years. It would be nice to find a doctor or two who practiced medicine but that's a difficult thing to do. Can't imagine how any physician would prescribe antidepressants without automatically testing vitamin D and manage to keep a medical license but that's probably why they are wealthy and I'm not.

Oh well, I guess they can't be up on everything. You should see the look you get when you tell them you'd like to test for the level of substance P in your brain.

I haven't gotten one to prescribe a substance P inhibitor either even though there are a couple on the market. Guess I'll have to stick to the Capsaicin for now.

Do you folks with fibro take Glucosamine-Chondroitin or does it not help? I've been on it for about 2 months now and the difference in joint pain is incredible. My knees are bone-to-bone and normally winter is awful as is the pain and swelling when I work too hard, but lately, I have no issues at all.

BigNorsk

It doesn't help directly but it does indirectly. I can tell a definite difference in my back with taking the glucosamine-chondroitin. Seems to mostly be the glucosamine. Maybe I eat enough cartilage and insects to get the equivalent of the chondroitin anyway.

See the thing is with fibro what you would feel as some stiffness or some pressure, people with fibro feel pain. So joint problems are a constant pain festival for people with fibro. The the extent that the supplement can help with joint health, it can be a big help in relieving pain.

Does taking calcium help? How about weight bearing exercise?
I know that when my back bothers me, time on the BowFlex provides the best relief and when my knees get stiff, doing uphill treks on the treadmill helps tremendously.
My ortho told me that exercise is the best medicine for pain, which makes sense, knowing what we do about endorphins and muscle tone and strength about the joints. Fibro must be a different kind of problem, though, but surely staying mobile would help on some level, wouldn't it?

Weight bearing exercize is not recomended for fibro. Walking and swimming are. This cold snap has played a number on my wanting to go to the pool for my swim. Mostly, I try to go 3 times a week. I went on tuesday. It does help, if I don't overdo it.

My in-laws left on a trip to visit my brother-in-law today, and they've been wondering if they'd have any trouble getting to the airport. They're farther south and have more snow than we do. Around these parts, we call em starlings. Add dirty to that description also- they poo everywhere! Actually, their feathers are kinda pretty- they have a very dark blue and purple sheen to them. But that doesn't make me like them any better.

I saw 2 robins here a couple weeks ago- one of those below zero nasty days, all fluffed up sitting on a crabapple tree. I don't know if they came back too early, or were partying when everybody left last fall and they missed the boat! In any case, they looked VERY out of place, sitting there in the cold with snow all around. I felt sorry for them.

But the light is supposed to hit my retina, so I need to look at it now and again. 30 minutes a day for the first couple of weeks, then 15-20 per day after that during the dreary season. Nothing close to 60 here, but it was nice today. Even my puppy took advantage of the slightly warmer weather today. I would love summer if it never got above 75 degrees, and maybe now that we have global cooling instead of Al Gore's global warming maybe that will happen heh? ^_^

We're going to make it into the 50s for the next couple of days. The bad thing about that is all the mud from melted snow. My pour doggie is going to be a mess.

We'll get Robins in a couple of weeks. George want's to know, what's a Grackle?
Grackles are related to crows. They're just a little bigger than a robin. They have a greenish or purple sheen when the light hits them right. They are not the same thing as a starling, but grackles and starlings look a lot alike. Starlings don't have the sheen, they're just dull dark gray. Grackles are native American birds, starlings were imported. Grackles migrate, starlings don't. Grackles have longer tails. One has a black beak, the other has yellow, but I don't remember which is which. They do tend to be a bit messy, especially if they visit your birdfeeder, but they aren't really a nuisance.

If you want messy birds, you can find plenty of crows (thousands and thousands) in the area around Tiger's doctor's office and the Ronald McDonald house in winter. At night, it sounds like the sound track to a jungle movie. When we go home, one of the things on our to-do list is to wash the van as soon as weather permits.

I wonder if next time he won't stray when he feels the freedom???

2 years ago when we experienced major flooding in our town, everyone was throwing away things from their basements (including us) and it was horrible looking up and down our street with everyone's things out by the curb.

We left our door open to carry stuff out and our dog who is never off leash except in the fenced back yard got out! We were mortified!!!

Well, a neighbor found her up by the school and told her to go home and she did! The next time she found herself outside the home, she didn't move :D

I had a wonderful return once several years ago. My husband was in the hospital. When my mother-in-law was taking the dog outside, the cat escaped. We called and hunted for him, even tried to follow his tracks in the fresh snow. He was gone for 2 weeks. Then, on Christmas Day, he showed up on our front steps, a litltle thinner, but still fat and sassy. He was a huge, orange tiger cat--think Garfield--hard to miss. He greeted us, then headed for his food dish. It was a couple weeks before he decided to visit the great outdoors again.

There are easier ways to punish yourself. Just try and get through a Joel Osteen broadcast. That works for me. 5 minutes into any program or podcast and I'm screaming "When are you gonna talk about sin? Ya know, the thing that keeps us separated from God? And JESUS DID NOT DIE TO MAKE US FEEL BETTER ABOUT OURSELVES!!!! HE IS NOT OUR LIFE COACH!!!!" It's actually a pretty good way to destress. LOL

Glad yours does... ^_^ For some odd reason my hubby stole a pair of my socks- of course one of my favorite pair. Wore them till they were all stretched out and had a hole in them- and now he puts them back in MY pile of clothes. sheesh.

Glad puppy came back. That's always a heartsick feeling- wondering if they will. We have a kitty that likes to escape now and then. Usually we catch him right away. Once in awhile he'll get himself shut in a room we don't use much- like one of the kid's rooms, then we are looking all over for him. With a cat-you generally don't miss them right away either- since they like to hide them selves away. So he's generally absent awhile before we actually think- hmmm, anybody seen the cat lately?

I thought all socks went under the bed to die. And half of my socks have been sucked into that parallel universe where everything you've ever lost goes. You will one day find all your keys, earrings, jewelry, etc. that you have lost in your lifetime. I just hope I don't get it back. I don't think I'll have pockets when I'm dead. LOL

Trust me, the press has hounded Brett for 6 years about when he's going to retire....we all thought it was funny when he played with them a couple of years ago. But, you are a big football guy, and you may remember it differently than I do. Call it fibro fog for me! ^_^
