I'm not a Giants fan, but I am tired of the Patriots and ESPN lovin' on them. :sorry:

Ha. But no, if I kneeled it would just draw attention to myself. Nobody kneels and nobody crosses themselves either ( I do both at home) . I'm not going to do something just because I can, if I think it is going to offend someone.

I think the Anglosaxons may have had a word for 'you plural' in old English, but lost it sometime after the Dane-law period. So "y'all" and "yous" is all we have.

Were did all this "giving it up for Lent" thing start anyway? I don't feel the need to give anything up. I guess I would if I knew it really meant anything.

maylor
5th February 2008, 11:56 PM
Lent is period of fasting and repentance traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations in preparation for Easter. The length of the Lenten fast, was established in the 4th century as 40 days. During this time, participants eat sparingly, or simply give up a particular food or habit. Ash Wednesday (http://www.gotquestions.org/Ash-Wednesday.html) and Lent began as a way for Catholics to remind themselves to repent of their sins in a similar manner to how people in the Old Testament repented in sackcloth, ashes, and fasting (Esther 4:1-3; Jeremiah 6:26; Daniel 9:3; Matthew 11:21).

However, over the centuries it has developed a much more "sacramental" value. Many Catholics understand giving something up for Lent as a way to gain blessing from God. The Bible does not teach that such acts have any merit with God (Isaiah 64:6). In fact, the New Testament teaches us that our acts of fasting and repentance should be done in a manner that does not attract attention to ourselves: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:16-18).

Fasting is a good thing when it is done with a Biblical perspective. It is good and pleasing to God when we give up sinful habits and practices. There is absolutely nothing wrong with setting aside a time where we focus on Jesus' death and resurrection. However, these "practices" are things we should be doing every day of the year, not just for 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. If you feel led of the Lord to observe Lent, you are free to do so. Be sure to focus on the time as you repenting from your sins and consecrating yourself to God - not on trying to earn God's favor or increase His love for you!

Giving up stuff for lent is a way of experiencing sacrifice. We won't ever be able to experience the sacrifice on the cross (thank GOD!), but in a way, this helps us to relate to what sacrifice means and how difficult it is to give up something.

BreadAlone
6th February 2008, 10:09 AM
I think the whole point of fasting is, when we hunger or crave whatever it is we're giving up (and it doesn't have to be food; it could be television or something), we focus our minds on the cross rather than on our physical wants and needs.

I know we have a lot of guests lately, but I think we should use it as an opportunity to show God's love. Sometimes people ask questions because they are trying to resolve inner turmoil. They may not be sure about what they believe, even though they seem to be arguing for their side with passion. They might know the answers already, but sometimes a kind word of truth can make a lightbulb turn on in someone's head.

Warning shots? No, can't do that. I was taught in my CCW class that you never fire a warning shot. If your bullets are found anywhere other than in the bad guy, you missed.

I think it's quite obvious why the EO's have chosen this time. They knew you were away, so it was time to come out and play. I'm tellin' ya, Seajoy, they fear you. Clearly, when Seajoy is away, the EO's come out to play. :D

Seajoy, you know I love ya! I know it's hard not to let your own emotions and life experience get in the middle of a discussion. There have been lots of times that reading through threads has cause my blood pressure to rise. I do think it is possible though that some of these folks have lingering issues that were not resolved when they joined the EO church. Sometimes the ones that seem to fight the hardest are the ones who are the most unsure of where they stand.

Ctay, Congrats on the puppies. my wife and I used to have a small kennel and had puppies all the time. I loved the Cocker puppies. They were likely a lot like your Poms. Little fluffy, bouncing balls of energy.:)

Well, I tried to get my wagon out of the drive yesterday. I got to within a hundred feet of the bridge and got stuck. The wheels sank into the snow and she high-centred. So, now Bess' sitting with the front about a foot higher than the rear. Ah well, the sun has been shining for a few days and it's supposed to keep shining for quite a while. So, maybe I'll get her out later in the week.

I was able to get to work today for the first time in almost two weeks. Had a good day. The people I work for had a lot of snow damage though. They lost quite a few trees, a gazebo, and two carports. Spent the day cleaning up the mess. Some of it I can't touch as the insurance company has to see it.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Yeah, so do Cockers. The difference is that most Cockers are missing a brain (LOL).;)

Got to go to work for two days, YAY!!

'Course, the wagon's still stuck in the driveway...

My daughter was really sick 2 weeks ago with severe fever (to the point it made her sick to her stomach) and she's only just stopped coughing. One lady in our office was out for a week and had to have treatments for bronchitis. There is also a stomach virus going around and people are dropping out for a few days at a time!

What an interesting day we had yesterday. Cancelled church at the last minute cuz we got a report that even a road grader pushing snow went in the ditch, and with -35 (or more) windchills we didn't want our country folks to even try to come in.

I went to church extra early to shovel the sidewalk (the men were all working), plus I always practice before service. When we got the report from one of the guys (out working on the roads) that a maintainer went in the ditch, Pastor, his wife and myself all got on our phones to call everyone to cancel. (You can do that with a small congregation- or so we thought...). One family got in before we caught them- hopefully they weren't too upset to be told we were cancelling services - at least we caught them before they all got out of their car witht the little baby...

We started setting up the church for our soup supper next Thursday, and while we were working on that a couple that we did not know walked in the door - of course they were wondering if they were in the right place- what a day to pick to visit our church  .

By then Pastor was regretting the decision to cancel services. But he had an excellent opportunity to sit down with them and talk to them personally, get some background as to who they were and let them know all about our church. Maybe it was a good thing- they didn't get a chance to 'anonymously' visit then sneak out before Pastor got a chance to speak to them! Which sometimes can happen...

So maybe things do all work out - God certainly works in mysterious ways!

It DOES sound as if it was a good thing that the couple were able to have some one on one contact with the pastor :) Perhaps they'll feel very comfortable returning soon :)

Look on the calendar for March 20--it says first day of Spring--we'll probably still have a foot of snow on the ground. Right now, it's snowing, school got out early today, and it warmed up all the way to 5 above zero today. My cats both have "February-itis", the very earliest sign of spring.

I think everyone has a ground-hog. Wiarton Willie says it's going to be an early spring. We have an early Easter, also an indicator of an early spring. It is Leap Year, Spring is always early, but miserably wet, as art the summers in a Leap Year. In Southern Ontario it is ALWAYS almost impossible to make decent dry hay in a Leap Year.

So... like last week Spring will come and go until June.

Studeclunker

Well, I wish California could be described as affordable. Still, with the housing bust in Arizona and Nevada, homes should be really inexpensive. Sedona and Flagstaff are really pretty with four seasons. Phoenix has gotten crowded and expensive. N. Mex. isn't too very bad, too hot for me though.

It's too bad that Lewiston has gotten so expensive. The area has a lot going for it. We have four seasons without the extremes being so... extreme. Our lows are around the teens and highs around a hundred or so. The extremes are, at worst a month or so each a year. Usually July to August with a few days in Fall and January to Febuary with a few days in December and March. The rest of the year is in the 70's and 80's. Quite mild, quite nice. The scenery is beautiful, air clean, good water, fishing great, and hunting too. Just... expensive. Pity that, we could use a good H.V.A.C. man around here.

I've never even heard of seasonal affective disorder. But it does make sense. When I used to live in CT, we'd have day after day of those grey skies and no sunshine and cold weather. Now that I live in AZ, the only time of year that still has an adverse effect on me is Christmastime. I always had my worst attacks around that time of year. Even though it's sunny and warm in Phoenix at Christmas time I still get sad. Maybe it's a force of habit, since I was so used to it back east I've just carried it with me. Since moving to AZ my depression is greatly decreased and almost gone. But some days are still rough.

If you have any flourescent lighting, gro-bulbs (or greenhouse flor. tubes) would be beneficial to your condition and an inexpensive addition to the house (with the side benefit of not having to just sit in one place for those beneies;) ).

4 kids were killed. Two were brothers in 3rd and 5th grade. Their sister had died during surgery a few years ago. My niece's boyfriend was best man in their oldest brother's wedding this past saturday. Their are only 2 of 5 children left in the family.

Another family lost their daughter who was in 5th grade. Their son is also in critical condition from this crash.

One of the teachers at the school lost a son as well.

My brother is on the school board for this school. My nephew is speaking at a prayer service today in one of the local churches at about 10am.

I am stunned at what has happened. Please pray for all the families involved. May our dear Lord give them comfort in the salvation won for them in Jesus, while this small community greives. :prayer:

One of the teachers at the school lost a son as well.

My brother is on the school board for this school. My nephew is speaking at a prayer service today in one of the local churches at about 10am.

I am stunned at what has happened. Please pray for all the families involved. May our dear Lord give them comfort in the salvation won for them in Jesus, while this small community greives. :prayer:
That is very sad. :(
May the Lord comfort everyone involved.

Anyone here been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder? My doctor decided to add that to my list of disorders yesterday. I was in his office bawling like a baby. The sun had not shined in my area of WI in over a month. We have ordered the appropriate light for me to sit next to.
In the mean time, God sent me a beautiful sunny day today, and I feel great!

Thanks to those who prayed for me yesterday. God has answered our prayers in His way. With the sun and His Son. :)

I don't have it, but know of a lot of online friends who do!!! You aren't alone. The light WILL help you a lot!!!

Here's two links to the stories if anyone's looking:

When I was a schoolbus driver, this kind of thing was my worst nightmare. These crashes keep drivers up nights all over the country. This crash details just how important the drivers are to the district and the children. It's funny... often the janitor is given better treatment by the school district than their School Bus Drivers. It's sad, really, but there you are...

I have found out some more on the situation from family and friends. All of the children that died were from Christian families. 3 ELCA, 1 AoG. The little girl had just played piano at her ELCA church this past sunday. Her brother who was in critical condition should be ok. He had much glass imbedded in his body, and needed surgery to remove it from his eyes. The surgery went well from what people have heard. He is my cousin's son's best friend. Thank you all for your prayers. :groupray: There are still several other children in the hospital. I do not know their conditions. 14 were injured in total.

It was not the bus driver's fault, though he is taking it very hard. He is a kind and good-hearted 52yr old man. The
accident was caused by a 23 year old woman who ran a stop sign at a fast speed. There was a witness in a truck behind the bus.

poor 23 year old girl too...she must feel horrible.

A good reminder to actually STOP at the stop sign. Most cars I see when I am crossing the street near a stop-sign, do not actually stop. They just slow down a bit. GGRRRRRRRR

I see the news media is reporting the lady didn't have a license. She was convicted of that once before. I suppse that means no insurance either or probably not much anyway. And I see her name looks like she could be Mexican.

A horrible accident.

I know a few people from Cottonwood, crop consultants like myself. But they and their families were not involved directly.

We are on our 2nd Lab. The first one was a blonde female. She was just like a member of the family. We never went on vacation without her, and my son and I had endless hours of fun with her from duck and goose hunting. We still reminesce about all the laughs we git from her, like when she would jump up on me and puch me through the front of the blind and I almost ended up in the lake. ^_^ She would just get so excited when ducks would come in that she couldn't contain herself :ebil:

Then last year my daughter asked me to watch their large male black Lab because the neighbors were complaining out him barking at night. She brought him over and he's been here ever since. About 6 monthes ago she told me he was all mine.

We don't like having dogs in the house, but I sure would enjoy his company when my better half is gone shopping.

EIGHTY MILES????? Oh my, Rad, and I complain of my thirty mile commute to church (LOL)! ;)

I love the idea of the little island with a bird-house, in the middle of the pond. Cats would certainly be no concern, eh? Just make sure that a really good pond liner is used. Home Depot carries it or there's several catalogue pond supply companies around. Better to spend a little more on a liner than to deal with problems with cracked concrete or a leaking liner.;) That's one thing I really miss is my fish pond...

It's one of those rainy cold days here too. I'd go out and help George with his garden, if my back wasn't giving me ol' Harry today.:sigh: I think I'll have a wee cuppa, a few Tylinol, then go out and do it anyway...;)

Here's hoping you all have a great Sunday.

Howdy, all. I just returned (300 miles) from the weekend of preaching, etc.

And I am sore!

Yesterday morning there was rain starting coming down as I went from the parsonage to the church (across the street). Within 15 minutes I was going to go back to the parsonage. It looked identical in terms of everything being wet, but it was pure ice. I couldn't even get to the railing. I did a nice 1 1/2 somersault, hitting my shoulder, back, hips, lower leg and head as I went down 6 stairs of concrete! The good thing about my hips: it actually hit my cell phone in my belt holster, and popped it out and into the street. Probably saved my hip from an even worse injury.

Someone took me to the hospital - no broken bones, but I am getting a little black and blue. And driving back today for 4 1/2 hours, my shoulders and hips have stiffened up quite a bit.

As I was going down, around, over, under, I was thinking, "This is pretty idiotic!" ^_^ Well, you know, God watches over old people and fools and ... :D

Well with me---God protects the stupid. I have to quit going out on the snow and ice to get wood in my flip-flops. Just laziness on my part. Don't feel like putting on my boots. I've done some "skating" around while juggling the logs and just thank God sometimes that I make it back in the house safe.

Hope you feel better filo. Prayers. :prayer:

So glad you weren't hurt to bad.

I've went out on the front porch before, its cement and dropped a piece of firewood on my big toe, I saw stars. Went out to catch the horses in my pj's, housecoat, camoflouge boots, toboggin, gloves and coat before, I looked a sight. I bet the neighbors got a good laugh

:crossrc: for relief of your pains.

Back at the end of December I was back home and I slipped and fell on the ice while holding my granddaughter. In order to keep her from hitting her head on the ice I stuck my elbow out to try and catch myself. The pain was quite severe and lasted for weeks. I may have ruptured the bursur sac. It just recently stopped hurting.
