I was wondering if anyone here knew of a good conservative commentary of the bible. I find that most newer ones are written by American evangelicals, and without wishing to offend anyone they tend to preach a bit too much in their writing. I've also noticed that they have an amazing ability of writing loads on a passage, but they tend not to say much of worth. :sorry: Any suggestions?

Try Tom Wright. Even screaming liberals like me have a good respect for him.

N.T. Wright has some excellent stuff. Even us Papists can appreciate him. ;)

I have regularly been disappointed by commentaries that attempt to address the Bible as a whole. The book-by-book commentaries tend to be more scholarly and of higher quality.

Bartlett's comentaries are excellent. I also enjoy Peter Craigie's work, but am prejudiced by having enjoyed studying under Doctor Craigie. And I like the Interpretation series which, although I personally don't consider it "conservative", would certainly be conservative by some of the definitions I have read on the internet lately.

I tend to use Calvin (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/calvin/commentaries.i.html), Hendrickson (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=26067&event=CFN) and Henry (http://www.ccel.org/ccel/henry/mhc.i.html) as general commentators as well as others who have written commentaries on specific books of Scripture.

Keil & Delitzsch (http://www.centuryone.com/1313-3.html) are excellent also.

The Geneva Series (http://www.banneroftruth.org/pages/search.php) published by Banner of Truth are also good (serch by name of Book in link).

TomUK isn't a Calvinist.

I think I'll echo the others and offer +Wright as a good choice.

Ah. And that explains why the quote box showed the O.P. as "tomuea" instead of "TomUK".
