Okay two questions that I want Lutheran Theology on:
1. Baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or baptize in the name of Jesus?
2. The trinity: 3 separate people, or one "person" in three forms.
These are the things we debated in an inter-denominational Bible study and I had a hard time with the leader trying to tell me things that I didn't believe to be true, so I thought I better check the Lutheran church theology.

Okay two questions that I want Lutheran Theology on:Hi Music!
1. Baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or baptize in the name of Jesus? The Baptismal formula is given to us in Matthew 28:19...
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit"
Generally when someone says "Baptize in the name of Jesus" they say that because they are confusing the persons of the Trinity. After all if the Father is God and the Son is God then it shouldn't matter right? Which leads me to your second question...
2. The trinity: 3 separate people, or one "person" in three forms. The Triune God is 3 seperate people [persons], one God. My old avatar does a good job at picturing this...

The Father (Pater), Son (Filius) and Spirit (Spiritu) are seperate "persons" and are seperated by "is not" to show that they should not be confused with each other, they are connected to the center circle by "is" as they are God (Deus). I try to always refer to the Athanasian Creed if I need clarification on the Trinity... http://bookofconcord.org/creeds.html

In Christ,
MonicaNo offense, but - what kind of bible study is this???
I do commend you though Music, first off you recognised the errors and secondly, you seeked to learn why it is erronious.
Peace and Blessing to you!

Thanks Recht,
I just knew that the very words spoken by Jesus had to be more true than the acts of the apostles.
I am still confused on the trinity thing, but hey it is a confusing subject!
In Christ.
P.S. It is an inter-denominational study that goes over the salvation and baptismal plan.(This was my first time, but my best friends have gone and every week they come out with something crazy) The guy that leads it will be a licensed pastor in about 2 weeks, but is not ordained by God nor has he been to seminary.

Thanks Recht,My pleasure! :D
I just knew that the very words spoken by Jesus had to be more true than the acts of the apostles.Ahhh I see where this is coming from now. In Acts the Baptism in Jesus' name. I was Baptised (as an infant) in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It wouldn't be wrong for me to say I was Baptized in Jesus' name. However, as you noted, the words given to us by Precious Christ in the Great Commission are clear and direct. "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit".
I am still confused on the trinity thing, but hey it is a confusing subject!I think it was St. Augustine who said something like the more you try to understand the Trinity, the harder it becomes. So you are in good company. :D Just know the facts and try not to rationalize it too much. Some people like the egg picture (shell, yoke, white), I don't really like it because those are incomplete parts that make up the whole.
"For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by Himself to be God and Lord" (Athanasian Creed)
P.S. It is an inter-denominational study that goes over the salvation and baptismal plan.(This was my first time, but my best friends have gone and every week they come out with something crazy) The guy that leads it will be a licensed pastor in about 2 weeks, but is not ordained by God nor has he been to seminary.Isn't an inter-denominational bible study an oxymoron? lol!

Hey Music!!!
I actually gave up trying to fully understand or explain the Trinity. I believe the entity is far too complex for our human minds to fully grasp...so I lean on the Athanasian Creed as well.
If I ever became a televangelist and had to construct my own statement of faith for my website I would be in a world of hurt because I can promise you I would make some kind of error in describing my Trinitarian beliefs. I would have to put something like "refer to the Athanasian Creed and don't call me to explain it to you!" ;) :D
Peace

Recht,
I have heard the egg one before, I have also heard the H2O one before two. Like that H2O can have three forms water, steam, and ice. Just like God in three forms. Anyways I give up.
Inter-denominational Bible Study should be an oxymoron. my friend Jill (LCMSer) is so confused because she had never even heard of the different baptisms, she always grew up with infantile baptism. Poor girl was sooo confused and I could tell we both wanted to get out the creeds.
Anyways I have a missions meetings so I am outta here.
