Well the grill is warming up and I've got a huge plate of smoked sausages with peppers and onions ready to go. Anyone hungry?

We're smoked because there are lots of forest fires in the territory. We have been living in a smoky haze for about 2 weeks now, although I think it's a bit better today. We can actually see our local mountains again. :)

I love sparklers! It is a tradition for me and my younger cousins to light sparklers on the 4th! I have been doing it with them since they were babies. Now, when I show up for the family picnic, there first words are "Did you bring the sparklers???" :D
Thanks overnight!

We got a brief respite from the smoke, but I noticed this morning that it has returned. I also heard on the news this morning that there are over 150 fires in the territory. :| The sun looks like an angry orange color.

I'm sorry, TCapp. It's been several years since we experienced bad forest fires here in WV, but I do remember how terrible the smoke was. It was everywhere, in houses and stores. I hope the fires will be extinguished very soon, both for the sake of the forests and for the people!

The youth from Guildford Church of the Nazarene (Surrey) go back home tomorrow. You should see what W&W has done to our building! God bless you all for your hard work. I'll see if I can get my pastor to send some photos.
I got one photo of your buddies on the church steps. I didn't get one with me because my camera was dying. But I have a pic of me here, anyway, taken back in December.

I am sooooo glad the last 2 weeks are over! I have survived..."Fun in the Sun", VBS, 4th of July and my daughter's 12th birthday (complete with a mini-sleepover-2 friends!). I'm pooped!
The pool has been a wonderful blessing this summer. The kids have gotten a lot more confident in the water. And I have been enjoying it on hot afternoons (yup, Moms are allowed to swim too!), even if it is only 3 1/2 ft deep :sigh: . At least it is cool.

As I said, the photo of me was taken in December. Also, it's a photo I tinkered with. I was actually in the house and then later added the background (a pic from my front yard).
The temp outside in the second photo would have been around 20°C. (A lot better than that 35°C we were suffering with a couple of weeks ago.)
Our VBS is in August. :) I'm sure it will wear us out, too, if we actually manage to get involved.

Well, where to start.
For a dish, I will probably bring either a green-bean casserole or some corn fritter casserole. (Providing my mother-in-law is willing to part with the recipe. ^_^ ) I all else fails, a couple of tubs of Publix's Southern Style Potato Salad.
For my history, I have been a member of the United Methodists for as long as I can remember. I attended the Grace United Methodist Church in Douglas, AZ for 12-years then. I was later confirmed as a Methodist at the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church in Sierra Vista, AZ. Unfortunately I have not attended for some time between 97 and early '04, but my wife and I have been attending a couple different churches that we'd like to become members of. Today, we attended the Mandarin United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, FL. I really liked it and would like to go back. I am hoping my wife's feelings are the same.
Hope I did not go off-topic on this. ^_^

I saw you said Dec, but I thought you might have snow up there in the territory even though it's the middle of summer. :D
That is a much better temprature. I like the °. I always want to use them, but never know where they are unless I can cut and paste them from something that already has them in it.

I'm not an official greeter or anything. I do like to say hi to new folks that I haven't met though, or seen in the forums. Maybe I just like using the waving smiley. Nawww. :D
This seems like the perfect place for you to have posted. My green bean casserole took some heat, when the pot luck first started, but it's been long ago consumed. I'm ready for some more. It's still one of my favorite pot luck dishes. I could even call it a meal unto itself. :yum:

OK guys, you asked for it so here it is! California Chicken Enchiladas!!!
Ingredients:
3 cups chopped cooked chicken (You can use a store bought rotisserie chicken but I
prefer to buy a fresh one and stew it!)
2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Monterey Jack cheese with peppers (Pepper Jack)
1/2 cup sour cream
1 (4.5 oz) can chopped green chiles, drained
1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
8 (8 inch) flour tortillas
Vegetable cooking spray
1 (8 oz) container sour cream
1 (8oz) jar tomatillo salsa
Toppings: diced tomatoes, chpped avocado, chopped green onions, sliced ripe olives.
Stir together first 5 ingredients.
Spoon chicken mixture evenly down center of each tortilla, and roll up.
Arrange seam side down in a lightly greased 13X9-inch baking dish. Coat tortillas with
cooking spray.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
Stir together 8-ounce container sour cream and salsa. Spoon over hot enchiladas;
sprinkle with desired toppings.
OK, that's it! Very tasty (and very easy) and if you take it to a potluck, be prepared to furnish the recipe. This is not a hot (spicey) dish, though the pepper jack adds a little spice.
If you like it hotter, use some hot tomatilla salsa (also called salsa verde). I've never been brave enough. ENJOY!

My kids were in the tomato patch. Please enjoy the "fruits of their labors" ;)
My husband volunteered me to make another missionary bear for a nearby church a friend of our pastors. The first one (Paul) has been a hit with the kids at our church. He has been to Moody Aviation School, England, Mexico and Germany. We are hoping he gets back from Germany in time to go to South Africa with my friend Heather on her mission trip. It has been a great way to teach the kids about the world and what the church is doing in places other than here. Not too shabby for a skein of yarn and a few hours with a crochet hook. :)

Celtie-what's this missionary bear you are talking about? Sounds pretty neat.
He is a teddy bear named Paul that I crocheted and donated to our churches children's dept. He gets sent to or with missionaries around the world that the church supports. When he returns the children learn about where he has been thru his journal, photos and souvenirs. The new bear will go to a church in a nearby town that a friend of ours pastors.
The idea for Paul came from my husband and kids about a year ago. One of the news programs did a "Flat Fred" story (the cardboard cutout that gets sent around the world in envelopes). Then we talked about the traveling teddy that was around a few years ago and the kids thought it would be neat to do something like that with the church. So we hunted thru my books, found a pattern and I made the bear. My daughter decided his name was Paul-for obvious reasons- and he headed off to church. It has been a really neat project and very well received by the kids. They decide where he goes from a list the church has and can't wait for him to return with new stories. even some of the adults have gotten into it. Dr. Mark took Paul with him to Mexico on a medical mission. He asked the kids if there were any special care instructions for Paul (brushing teeth, saying prayers etc) and, judging from the photos he brought back, he had fun using Paul in the dentist "office" a chair under a canopy in the courtyard. Paul even came back with a serape and sombrero that people from the village gave him.

Hi all. I'm so new that I don't even know if I'm doing this right. Please bear with me if I do something stupid!
I'm Jennifer. 33, single mom of a just-turned 6-year-old girl. And until quite recently, I'd describe my life motto as "This is not the life I ordered!" Fortunately for me... I've found the missing link in accelting the Lord into my life <-- he's been knocking but I couldn't figure out how to open the door.
Raised Catholic and strayed as a teen. I somewhat "pretended" to be Catholic in college-- only so far as it didn't interfere with my social life. Married the older brother of a college friend who wasn't happy settling for one woman. So at 29, I became a working single mom-- thus that life problem.
I knew that I wanted to bring my daughter up in the Lord... because I felt that I had never had the connection. So I started sending her to Christian-based preschools and attending a non-denominational church (pretty infrequently). At five, she just might have been more in touch with her faith than I am.
I church hopped, but never felt like I had found a home until VERY recently (about 5 months ago) at the Church of the Nazarene. I'm hooked and I feel that I'm growing each and every day in the Lord!
I'm bringing hot dogs-- so we can relish the conversation!

I'm new to this forum too but have found it to be a friendly place, full of fellow Christians who, like you, are just trying to find their path in a sometimes unfriendly and nearly always confusing world. It helps to have Christian friends to lean on-and now you have LOTS of them! http://www.christianforums.ca/images/smilies/wave.gif So rejoice and be glad-and be welcome in this place! One question-- please recommend a kids bible for a bright 6 year old girl. I've been looking for one that's something like "The Little Woman's something..." I want one that's in line with Church of the Nazarene beliefs. She has several--but mostly toddler things that lay foundation with stories.

It's summer...why not some strawberries and ice cream?
Hi all. I live in a suburb of Cleveland, OH. I grew up with a Catholic dad and a mom in the UMC. Sat. nights we'd go to mass, and Sunday we'd go to the UMC.
I was baptised in a Catholic church and made my first communion. I was confirmed in the Methodist church that I have attended since I was a baby.
I really enjoy my church and the enigmatic pastors that we have now and have had. I've been told our church is big for a Methodist church with about 1200-1400 in membership.
Our church is really involved in missions throughout the world, and I have gone on three work missions when I was in high school to different parts of the country.
OK, that's about all!

One question-- please recommend a kids bible for a bright 6 year old girl. I've been looking for one that's something like "The Little Woman's something..." I want one that's in line with Church of the Nazarene beliefs. She has several--but mostly toddler things that lay foundation with stories.
Thanks All-- you're all so kind and welcoming!
Jenelis,
My daughter has been using a Bible called "the Treasure Study Bible" since she was about 7. It is the full NIV text, single column print and uses the Thompson Chain-reference to create treasure hunts thru the Bible for studying different topics.
It also include a daily devotions guide, the treasure map-starting place for all the treasure hunts, begins with a topic (ie-bad Friends) some questions to think about and the first verse of the hunt to find the answers. At the end of the hunt is the treasure chest which helps sum up what you (hopefully) learned on your quest. It is a Kirkbride publication. My daughter loves it!
My son uses the Adventure Bible for Young readers-again it is the full NIrV text, 2 column print with study helps throughout. These are divided into "Life in Bible times", People in Bible times", "Let's Live It!" (tied to a bible principle or story), "Words to Treasure" (key verses for memory work) and "Did You Know? (discovery questions and the answers with bible verse). It is a ZonderKidz publication.
From the slightly battered condition of each of these you can surmise they have been well used over the past few years.
Speaking of kids and Bibles reminds me of something I miss from the Methodist churches I have attended. When children reached the 3rd grade they were given a Bible of their own. In the non-denom we now attend, no Bibles are given by the chuch until graduation from HS. The parents are expected to provide Bibles for their younger children, but most do not do so until the child is in 6th or 7th grade. We got more than a few odd looks when our kids started toting their own Bible at age 7, but we felt it was important.

Okay, this has been a weird few days.
First, hubby decides we are going tenting in VA (Grayson Highlands area). I hate tenting!! Sleeping on the ground holds no appeal and the air mattress tends to not hold air thru the nite. Woke up at 3am uncomfortable, in pain* and unable to breathe--all due to the mattress swallowing me! Moved to the van where I was no longer in pain and able to breathe, but, having no spare blanket, I was cold.
Other than that the trip was fun--we went hiking and saw the wild ponies, cooked on the campfire and made smores.
Then I get home and NO CF!!!! Almost had a panic attack--thought I had lost all you guys
So---- I have brought a HUGE chocolate cheesecake :yum: for everyone to dive into.

*pain was mainly due to an electrolyte imbalance that has been plaguing me off and on for the past few years. Keep your hands off my bananas and Gatorade and no one will get hurt ;) .

I'm going camping at the end of next week. If you ever come to Ontario, try camping at Cypress Lake, near the end of the Bruce Penninsula between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The whole area is a mecca for scuba divers with shipwrecks, limestone grottos, and the Niagara Escarpment running throught it. Of all the campsites I've been to, this one is truly unique.
There's nothing like camping in a thunderstorm, the feel of water running under the tent, the roof saging under the weight of water, the tent posts coming loose and the knowledge that lightning could hit a nearby tree at any time. We sang "Closer my God to Thee, closer to Thee," just like they did on the Titanic,

I was in southern Missouri. We went to Table Rock lake (http://bradfordonthelake.us/lodgeweb1.jpg), made a drive through Branson, then went to Cassville, near Roaring River (http://www.ozarkchronicles.com/places/troutparks/roaringriver/roaringriver.htm).
While we were there, we visited the church in the town we were near. It seem pretty cool. Their response was loud and clear in the responsive portions. They had a new priest, who was preaching his first sermon there. Of course it was the typical get to know you message, on greed, selfishness and being prepared for death. :)
It was great to see some place new.
It's great to be back home too. :)

Neat pics! Glad you had a good time. Did you go fishing? When I went to KY, we went out on the lake one night. We had just anchored and started to eat dinner when we found ourselves in the middle of a big Bass competition. The competitors would speed by us in their bass boats and the waves would rock us quite a bit. Needless to say, eating was quite an experience that night! :D
I like attending church in different churches when I travel just to experience different services. See how they do things, how we are different and how we are alike.

My harassing of bigsierra and his green bean casserole have come back to haunt me....
A couple of times a year, the place I work for gets together and has a cook out or a covered dish dinner or a breakfast. We are getting ready to do a cook out. I was working with my boss to get things lined up and we were going over what we were going to have. We have a small staff, so I like to try and fix what I know are people's favorites or what they request I fix. So I asked him what he wanted, a ham and bean casserole, macaroni casserole, scalloped potatoes, just what was his request. He looked at me and said "You know what I would like? You think you could make one of those green bean casseroles? I really like those." I just burst out laughing. He had no clue why I was laughing. I said sure, I'll make one. How can I turn the boss down, right?
So, here I sit, surfing the web, looking for a recipe, planning to make one of those green bean casseroles.....

Those pics reminded me of camp meetings I used to go to when growing up. It was always the hottest time of the year and there weren't a lot of air conditioners around, so I never was too excited about that aspect. Other than the tempratures, those were some great times.

Neat pics, Dawn! What a beautiful group of children. I never went to camp as a kid. I think that is why I have enjoyed going on the retreat and mission trips with our youth group now. I am having my second childhood! :)
I like the animals at the fair too! I also like the John Deere tractors. One day I hope to own one. One of those big ones with the air conditioned cabs.....Anyway, a couple of years ago, I was going through the barn with the goats and one seemed very friendly. I was petting him and talking to him. When I went to leave, he spit on me!! I didn't know goats could spit. Camels, yes, goats, I had no clue. Anyway, now, I don't get too friendly with the goats. One of the youth in my youth group is in the horse show, so I hope she will be competing while we are there and I can watch her.
bigsierra, I guess as long as the horse loaned them to you, it's ok. Still, that poor shoeless horse. Hope he didn't have to go to the fair without his shoes.....:D

Hey Theo  I think there is some ice cream left.
bigsierra, there are 47 "tents" in a circle around an open tabernacle. We eat in our cabins. They are open in the front, have a kitchen in the back, upstairs is where you sleep. There is also a "boarding tent" that has daily meals like a restaurant. They also offer sandwiches. There is also a consession stand that has candy and ice cream...(I put on 5 lbs at camp this year..chocolate...). I've gone there all my life. It runs for 12 days each year, starts the last Wednesday of July. If you're ever in DE around that time..come on and join us.

How about some more international food. I brought some Icelandic black bread with pickled herring, some dried fish and blood sausage. Anybody want some? I didn't have any pickled rams thingies but if someone wants to try them, I'll get some.
Sounds, ummmm, interesting. Too bad I can't eat fish.

Yikes! We haven't eaten for a week!!! Are we still alive??? :P
I'm in the mood for a big breakfast. I was in TN for a few days, and did I ever have some of the most wonderful, huge breakfasts. My body wasn't quite sure what to do because it count's itself lucky to get a bowl of cereal and a cup of yogurt in the mornings. :)
Anyway, in honor of TN breakfast's:
Eggs, bacon, potatoes, grits, sausage gravy, biscuits, pancakes, maple syrup, butter, apple fritters, apple butter, orange juice and a nice, steaming pot of coffee. :yum:

Where in TN were you?? I am near Bristol, which means we are bracing for race week (shudder). My kids will get out of school early on Friday--they don't want the buses in our part of the district getting caught in traffic heading to the track for qualifying that afternoon. We will most likely spend the weekend hiding out at home. We are close enough to hear the track noise when the wind is right and the jets do the return loop of their fly over over our house, but we are far enough away to not be bothered by the traffic. We will watch the races at home-we have never gone to see them live. Home offers softer seats, cheaper eats and a shorter line at the restroom :P . I don't know if my husband is planning to help park cars again or not. It may be the last time they can in the space they have been using--I think it is where the new condos are going up across from the track.

I went through Bristol! I spent a few days in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinsburg area. Were I live in WV, on race weekends in Bristol, even our hotels and restaurants are full and I am several hours from Bristol! Thanks for the warning!
At some point during my vacation, most of my family was together. My cousin and his children are really into NASCAR. So, they wanted to ride the go-carts and "race". He has 3 girls (the loves of my life!), 8, 6, and 4. The the 4 year old would not ride with anyone but me (the kids had to ride with someone on the track we were on, they couldn't ride by themselves.) After we get in the go-carts and one time around the track, Morgan looks over at me and says, with her little bottom lip quivering "I don't want to ride anymore!" So I took it slow for a couple of turns. But her grandpa and dad kept passing us with her sisters with them, and she decided she didn't like them to pass her, so she wanted me to go faster! She ended up liking the go-carts after all and wanted to keep riding them. She was a hoot once she realized how much fun they were. Watch out, though, when she gets turned loose on the highways! :D

AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
and yes, they still do start off with those words.
What a day this has been! Had to scrounge up money so the kids would have something to drink with lunch as I was out of juicebags. Braved the morning traffic for a trip to do the annual chest squash and got back just in time to pick my son up at school--2 hours early due to the race traffic :sigh: . Daughter comes in an hour an a half later and promptly begins harrassing her brother :help: . And one of our cats has decided he doesn't like to be indoors anymore.

Well, raceweek is over, except for picking up all the trash, and we survived! My daughter didn't even get a sunburn while parking cars! I didn't hear about any deaths this time around (praise God!), and only a few visiting fools(rude ones at that) were still around when we went for groceries late yesterday afternoon. Most of the campers pulled out yesterday morning.
On Wed. evening the youth group is having the commitment ceremony for their "True Love Waits" study. My daughter will be involved. She and her Dad picked out a silver neck chain as her commitment token. Because of her age (12) she will probably have an opportunity to renew her commitment in a couple of years and we will add a charm to the chain. I'm hoping that for the next few years she keeps her "guys are just buddies" attitude--it will make things soooo much simpler.
