That was a wonderful film! When I went to see it the second time, the huge stadium theater was half-filled entirely with Lutherans. VERY Lutheran Lutherans- you know, stern Swedes chatting about lutefisk recipes. It was an oddly uplifting experience.
Luther was good, though I think a little light on the theology. I can see how someone who isn't Lutheran might come away a little confused about why the Reformation actually occurred. I enjoyed it anyway though. Wanted to take my sunday school class to see it, but there were only a few showings in our area, and I didn't have time to arrange it. Too bad! Luckily, the confirmation class does a play every year, so they all know Luther's life story, but it might have been more compelling to see it on the big screen. Well, there's always the DVD! :sigh:

I finally found out that it will be comming out soon. It is still being shown in some theaters and until it finishes its run they can't release it on video. The official web site says in its FAQ that it should be out this year!

I thought the movie was great. I also bought the soundtrack.

Really enjoyed the film, despite the inaccuracies! It was heart wrenching to learn that the beautiful scene about Luther presenting the Elector with the German New Testament was a product of someone's imagination. Luther and the Elector never personally met ! I was steamed!

What would have been cool is if the had shown the Elector converting on his death bed.

Yo Caelum!
It is a good movie. It should be out on DVD and video by the end of the year. As ChiRho pointed out there were some flaws in it, but they won't bother you unless you know a lot of details about the Reformation...
There are some problems with chronology. For example, the iconoclastic upheaval led by Karlstadt while Luther was at the Wartburg is blurred into the Peasants’ War. Luther quelled the iconoclasm problem when he returned from the Wartburg in March 1522, while the Peasants’ War did not take place until 1524-1525. The movie has them as one and the same event. The movie has Luther returning from the Wartburg by invitation of the Elector, when in fact he returned against the wishes of Frederick the Wise. The movie depicts Melanchthon delivering the Augsburg Confession before the Diet at Augsburg in 1530, when in fact the elector’s chief of staff did the honors. There are other such small flaws.

Over all, I think you'll enjoy it. It has some really funny parts too, Luther's lecture on Roman Catholic relics had me rolling on the floor. ^_^

Oh and my two big gripes are that:
1) That it wasn't 3 or 4 hours long. :D It feels a little rushed.
2) Not enough Katie. (My wifes #1 gripe)

well, it's too bad such a movie couldn't get more attention...im assuming its a budget made movie?

I was actually surprised at the amount of attention it got. I saw previews for it on the History Channel and I didn't have a problem finding a theater to watch it in. The critics and (Roman Catholics lol) bashed the film, but one thing they generally agreed on was that the scenery and costumes were excellent, so no it doesn't look low budget at all.

Loved that movie... I have it on DVD, actually... Frederick the Wise was an awesome, a very skillful and shrewd character...

The only thing with the portrayal that is funny is that Frederick died at a much younger age than the actor who portrayed him was. Ustinov was in his 80s when he played that part. Frederick III (The Wise) was 62 when he died.
I don't know why the producers went with such a much older actor when casting the part. Perhaps because people back then aged quicker than now.

I think you've hit on the reason. I don't remember the source of the quote, but life in the middle ages has been described as "nasty, brutish, and short" so a person's physical appearance would probably age rapidly.

I thought I saw that movie a couple of years ago.

The movie came out in 2003 in the theaters and late 2004 or early 2005 on DVD. I have had my own copy which I have now viewed at least 5 times. I also have The Passion, Jesus of Nazareth, Peter and Paul and the Old 1950s movie "Martin Luther" in my collection.

But do you have "The Lord of the Rings" and the "Godfather"?
