My wife has been disabled for years, but has been told by the Social Security Administration that she does not have enough worked hours on her record to qualify for SSA/Disability. So she never bothered applying for disability. Recently we were told that she could apply for SSA/Disability under my worked hours as my wife. So she has finally applied for the benefots. Pray that God will provide us with the benefits, as my income is just not sufficient to meet all of our expenses. Thanks. Also, there are rumors of layoffs at work. Pray I keep my job, as we have no savings to fall back on after my layoff two years ago from my previous job. Thanks. :prayer:

Father in Heaven, lift up Cajunhillbilly and his wife as they go through this time of financial trouble. We pray that their needs will be met, through you and in you, that the SSA will provide needed benefits, and that the work situation improves.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Hi, I'm new to this Reformed theology... but I must say, the more I investigate it (very good Reformed sites that I've been reading!), the more awesome it becomes. The idea that grace comes from God alone... wow, novel idea, wouldn't you say??? It just seems foolish, now that I look at it, that the measure of man's faith is what can save him... that he "just needs to have enough faith" to have God save him. And hearing how many people say that they can lose their salvation...?! What's with that? Why would Jesus die just to have people lose the awesome gift?! Makes zero sense.

Anyway, while I'm at this table, may I have some chocolate milk? And make it the good stuff.

Ok! I'm finally caught up! <brings in a fresh pot of strong dark coffee--then whips out several hot cups of cappuccino--french vanilla of course!>

I'd like to introduce you guys to a homemade treat really popular in my family called "Blanche's Tea Ring" It's a "coffee cake" with a cinnamon/pecan filling --great warm with a little real butter--or even cold later on.

For those of us trying to cut down on our refined sugars--there's a fruit filled version with less than half the sugar--but yould never tell the difference!

Hmm... I think I'll pass on the tuna. Even before I was a vegetarian, I couldn't stand to eat anything that came from the ocean, lol.

Actually, I think I'd like more of a brunch, if that's still being served... some eggs and grits and biscuits and fruit. Yep, living in the South has taught me to love a hearty breakfast.

A little tip for Calvinists during a debate.

Right before the debate, I find that 15 to 20 cups of coffee helps and when your opponent is about to make his opening statement, this is when you light your cigar.

I don't know what it is, but I must admit that Thai food is pretty tasty. In particular there was this rice dish that I don't know how to spell, except that it was pronounced "cow pot" or something like that. They set up stands at the side of the road and serve this stuff up, and it's excellent. It was an easy decision to attend my Thai friend's graduation party. The music, on the other hand, is an acquired taste.

Avatar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

See Avatar (disambiguation) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_%28disambiguation%29) for other meanings.
In Hinduism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism), an avatar is the incarnation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarnation) (bodily manifestation) of an Immortal Being, or of the Ultimate Supreme Being (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Being). It derives from the Sanskrit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit) word Avatāra which means "descent" and usually implies a deliberate descent into mortal realms for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hinduism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinduism), for incarnations of Vishnu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu) the Preserver, whom many Hindus worship as God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God). The Dasavatara (see below) are ten particular "great" incarnations of Vishnu.

Unlike Christianity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity), and Shaivism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaivism), Vaishnavism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaishnavism) believes that God takes a special (including human) form whenever there is a decline of righteousness (dharma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharma)) and rise of evil. Lord Krishna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishna), an avatar of Vishnu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu), according to Vaishnavism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaishnavism) that is espoused by Ramanuja (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanuja) and Madhva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhva), and God in Gaudiya Vaishnavism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudiya_Vaishnavism), said in the Gita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gita): “For the protection of the good, for destruction of evil, and for the establishment of righteousness, I come into being from age to age.” (Bhagavad Gita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhagavad_Gita), Chapter 4, verse 8.) In any event, all Hindus believe that there is no difference between worship of Vishnu and His avatars as it all leads to Him.

The word has also been used by extension by non-Hindus to refer to the incarnations of God (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God) in other religions, notably Christianity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity), for example Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus).

According to Kiara Windrider (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kiara_Windrider&action=edit), in his book "Fire from Heaven: Dawn of Golden Age" , an avatar can be referred as one who comes to earth in response to humanity’s call when there is a certain level of stagnation. Windrider writes that an avatar is the descent of higher consciousness and that it need not necessarily be a spiritual being. For instance, he asserts that Gandhi was an avatar of non-violence, and Einstein was an avatar of physics and that any higher consciousness taking birth can be called an avatar. This opinion is by a professor and does not reflect the views of Hindus who believe that an avatar is an incarnation of Vishnu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu) and has a specific purpose for supporting dharma and destroying evil.

Hindu epics ("][/url]

Teachings and significance

The philosophy reflected in the Rama[/u] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rama), the hero of the Ramayana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramayana), and Krishna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishna), the friend of the Pandavas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandava) in the Mahabharata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahabharata). Unlike the superhuman devas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deva) (gods) of the Vedic Samhitas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samhita) and the abstract Upanishadic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upanishad) concept of the all-pervading Brahman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahman), the avatars in these epics are intermediaries between the Supreme Being represented as either Saguna Brahman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saguna_Brahman) or Nirguna Brahman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirguna_Brahman) and mere mortals.

This doctrine has had a great impact on Hindu religious life, for to many it means that God has manifested Himself in a form that could be appreciated even by the least sophisticated. Rama and Krishna have remained prominent as beloved and adored manifestations of the Divine for thousands of years among Hindus. The Upanishadic concept of the underlying unity Brahman is revered by many to be the pinnacle of Hindu thought, and the concept of the avatars has purveyed this concept to the average Hindu as an expression of the manifestation of the Hindu's highest single divinity as an aid to humanity in dark times. The Hindu cycle of creation and destruction contains the essence of the idea of "avatars" and indeed relies on a final avatar of Vishnu, that of Kalki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalki), as the final destructive force at the end of the world.

Aside Rama and Krishna there are many other human or animal forms which appeared on earth or elsewhere in the universe. Scriptures do not describe any appearance as an avatar by Brahma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahma) or Shiva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva) (they are themselves listed as guna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guna) avatars), but emanations of Vishnu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu) have appeared a number of times. Some Hindus, based on the Ramayana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramayana), aver that Shiva incarnated once as the monkey-god Hanuman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanuman). Hanuman is more well-known as the son of Vayu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vayu), the deva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deva) of wind or his emanation. (Hanuman lived in a the jungle and is called vanara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanara), which means people who live in the jungle, and was one of the greatest devotees of Vishnu).

Types of avatars

There are two type of avatars, primary avatars or vibhutis[/u] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibhuti). The most common type of primary avatars are called Svarupavatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Svarupavatars&action=edit), in which He manifests Himself in His Sat-cid-ananda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sat-cid-ananda) form. In the primary avatars, such as Narasimha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narasimha), Rama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rama), Krishna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishna) and Sri Aurobindo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Aurobindo), Vishnu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu) directly descends. The Svarupavatars are subdivided into Amsarupavatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Amsarupavatars&action=edit) and Purna avatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purna_avatars). In Amsarupavatars, Vishnu is fully present in the body but He is manifest in the person only partially. Such avatars include the first five avatars from Matsya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsya) to Vamana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vamana) except for Narasimha. Narasimha, Rama and Krishna, on the other hand, are types of Purna avatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purna_avatars), in which all the qualities and powers of the Lord are expressed. Narasimha and Rama are also additionally considered to be Lila avatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lila_avatars&action=edit).
Other avatars are secondary avatars, or rather vibhutis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibhuti), such as Parashurama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parashurama) in which Vishnu does not directly descend. Parashurama is the only one of the traditional ten avatars that is not a direct descent of Vishnu. There are two types of secondary avatars: 1) Vishnu enters a soul with His form. (e.g., Parashurama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parashurama)) or 2) Vishnu does not enter a soul with His own form, but gives him extraordinary divine powers. (e.g., Veda Vyasa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veda_Vyasa).) The secondary avatar class is sometimes called Saktyamsavatar, Saktyaveshavatar or avesha avatar.
Note that the secondary avatars are not worshipped. Only the direct, primary avatars are worshipped. However, in practice, the direct avatars that are worshipped today are the Purna avatars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purna_avatars) of Narasimha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narasimha), Rama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rama) and Krishna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishna). Krishna, among most Vaishnavites, is considered to be the highest kind of Purna avatar. However, followers of Chaitanya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaitanya) (including ISKCON (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISKCON)), Nimbarka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nimbarka), Vallabhacharya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallabhacharya) differ philosophically from other Vaishnavites, such as Ramanuja (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramanuja) and Madhva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madhva) and consider Krishna to be the ultimate Godhead, and not simply an avatar. In any event, all Hindus believe that there is no difference between worship of Vishnu and His avatars as it all leads to Him.
References are cited and given below.
A number of people in more recent times have claimed to be an avatar. See list of other avatar claimants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar#list_of_other_avatar_claimants).

The Ninth Avatar: Balarama or Buddha?

Balarama is the ninth avatar according to Buddhism[/u] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism) in India, some time in the latter half of the first millennium CE, a belief that Buddha is the ninth avatar gained prominence as an example of the remarkable ability of Hinduism to assimilate other ideas and cultures and it ultimately contributed to the decline of Buddhism in India. Vaishnava poet Jayadeva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jayadeva) Gosvami (12th century) in his famous Dasavatara stotra (http://www.salagram.net/Dasavatara-page.htm) from Gita Govinda (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gita_Govinda) glorifies both Balarama (as 8th avatar) and Buddha (as 9th avatar).

Buddha is therefore often referred to as Buddhadev ("Divine Buddha") by many Hindus. Buddhists, however, do not consider Buddha to be an avatar. A prominent contemporary Hindu thinker who considered Buddha an avatar was Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarvepalli_Radhakrishnan).

On the other hand, followers of Dvaita (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvaita), in particular, do not consider Buddha to be an avatar as he preached heterorthodox views (i.e., rejecting the Vedas, etc.) but instead accord Balarama (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balarama) the designation. Balarama, among the ten avatars, is different from other avatars as he is an incarnation of Vishnu's serpent Adi Sesha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adi_Sesha) rather than of Vishnu himself.

Symbolism

Many claim that the ten avatars represent the evolution of life and of mankind. Matsya, the fish, represents life in water. Kurma, the tortoise, represents the next stage, amphibianism. The third animal, the boar Varaha, symbolizes life on land. Narasimha, the Man-Lion, symbolizes the commencement development of man. Vamana, the dwarf, symbolizes this incomplete development. Then, Parashurama, the forest-dwelling hermit, connotes completion of the basic development of humankind. The King Rama signals man's ability to govern nations. Krishna, an expert in the sixty-four fields of science and art according to Hinduism, indicates man's advancement to cultural concerns. Buddha, the Enlightened one, symbolizes the enlightenment and spiritual advancement of man. Note that the time of the avatars does not necessarily indicate much; kings ruled long before Rama and science was pursued long before Krishna. The avatars represent the order, and not the time, of these occurrences, according to certain Hindus. The animal development connotations bear striking resemblances to the theory of Evolution.

Apart from the ten traditional avatars of Hinduism some other persons claimed to be avatars or are believed to be avatars by their followers.

The word "avatar" as used here, is obviously something completely different than what you've posted a ream about.
Which is amusing & confusung, because you didn't bother to post your scriptural reference:

1Cor7: Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8: But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
9: But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
10: For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
11: And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
12: But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
13: Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

Sometimes we need to strengthen that weak brother's conscience, or we'll starve ourselves tryin' not to offend him!

5solas,

As mentioned above your quote. My reference to "avatar" My Post (http://www.christianforums.com/showthread.php?p=17584675&postcount=416) was only in the context of definition provided in the post and therefore my comment based upon the words used. However, the reason I don't have an avatar has nothing to do with eating meat or not but rather the fact that I chose to remove all information from my account and then disappeared for awhile. Which I guess I am going to do again.

Espresso... eww. No cappuccino, either. I'll take regular coffee. Black. Strong. I like coffee that'll punch you in the face every morning. While everyone else at school is sipping their vile, sugary concoctions from Starbucks, I'm quaffing cowboy coffee.

Has anyone else ever put eggshells in their coffee pot?

Can't say that I have. Is there any reason for this?

That's what Espresso is, bud: strong, straight, black coffee. ;)

It's pressure brewed using an Espresso machine, which forces the hot water through the beans, which are ground very finely and densely packed, making the coffee stronger than ordinary drip coffee.

(For reference, a Cappuccino is Espresso with foamed milk. You might be thinking of such aberrations as a Latte--Espresso and steamed milk--or a Mocha--a Latte with chocolate.)

Well, you need a coffee machine to brew coffee, don't you? Ah, unless you're brewing in a French Press, of course. I like the way those make coffee, actually. Good stuff. :)

If you like a good stiff coffee, you'd probably like an Espresso. Provided it's made with good beans on a good machine.

I think the eggshells soak up oil.
I notice my stomache doesn't burn as easily, and the texture is a little cleaner. Rinse 'em off in hot water 'fore ya drop 'em in the pot.

I have recently discovered another forum at christiansunite.com. There a few struggling Calvinists and several overbearing "Free Will" types. These Free Willers don't seem to be grounded in theology very well.

I am asking some pointed questions in the theology forum because they attacked the Reformed Faith by calling it evil and exclusionary. I am still waiting for them to explain the meaning of John 6:44.

Come on in and join the Fun!

Attention all interested parties: If you remember this discussion toward the beginning of this thread:Due to the fact that none of you has actually tasted my church's coffee, you'll have to wait for the report from our "Does the Coffee Really Taste Bad" committee before I make a motion.

After all, I can't expect you to vote on that which you have no prior knowledge of.

Our committee has rendered it's findings in the usual timeline associated with such grave matters. A team of experts (read: tired mothers and church staff) has come to the conclusion that our particular church's coffee is strong enough, tastey enough and doggone it, people like
