[Moderators, if you don't like this subject then cut it out because I'm not in any mood to cause big divisions]
I've never had the chance to understand this fully, so I guess an open debate would be good.
From the protestant point of view, the cross with Jesus' image on it, ie a sculpture or a moulding, is considered an idol. The catholics view this as a symbol.
I've been told by many anglican friends that it is an idol, which is why anglican's just have the cross, whilst the chaplain of my highschool(catholic) has stated it's not an idol, it's a representation, and that Christians don't pray to the structure. Despite seeing an alter with the stature of Mary or Jesus...
So the debating topic is:
Is the image of Jesus as a sculpture or a mould an idol?
Details:
Each team has
1 moderator to regulate and deviating rebuttals or change of subject[if possible]
5 members maximum, 3 members minimum
2 statement speeches (Intro and Conclusion)
8 interrupt rebuttals
2 days to formulate the rebuttal and next statement speech
Debate will not start till the two teams have formed, and have agreed the set of rules and conditions, as well as understanding of the topic.
Please refer to the rules set out by Erwin.
Oh and also, please PM each other before giving out the statement during the debate. Also indicate who's giving the introduction and who is giving the conclusion.
Also post in here the group formations...and the members within. Each member within the group must post at least once!
And I believe this debate can be debated more than once, by different groups simultaneously. So I think once you form a group, you'll need to find an opposing group to debate against....then head off into the arena!
Good luck and have fun!
