Hello brothers and sisters,

I would like to invite you to join us to have our very own charismatic bible study here in this thread. I think that we can all really help each other grow in understanding what the Lord has revealed if we share together like this.

What I was thinking we could do was to go through a chapter of the New Testament per week and have a discussion / study.

So, I will keep us posted here with the new chapter each week and I ask you to pray for what God would have you share with us all here.

May the Holy Spirit guide us to show us how the charismatic elements of the Church are there as well in scripture, as we read God's Word together.

First let us pray that God will open our minds and hearts.

And so let us begin. :crossrc:

:amen:

The Gospel of St. Matthew
chapter 1

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

2 Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.

3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,

4 Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse,

6 Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.

7 Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph.

8 Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah.

9 Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.

10 Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah.

11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.

12 After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

14 Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud,

15 Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.

17 Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.

19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.

20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.

21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means "God is with us."

24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

Let us pray:

Lord Jesus, we praise you and thank you for this chance to be part of this bible study. Please make a way for us to understand in more depth what you want us to believe concerning what you have done for us. Melt us, mold us, fill us, and use us. We ask all of this in your Name, Jesus Christ, Amen.

This makes me think about how simple yet how deep in the bible. When I read "this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about" it is deeply profound what I am about to receive. The Scripture is talking about a virgin giving birth by the power of the Holy Spirit!

I think that when I reflect on this, I come to think of what God wants to do in me as well. I am called to give birth to Jesus in my life by what I say and do, and all of this through the holy Spirit.

Hello, I hope not to be intruding, but I enjoy bible studies and think this is a neat place to start. Now unto what I noticed.

25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus. I went to a Catholic service before and they said Mary remained a virgin, so what do you all make of this?

The more Bible studies the better the understanding! I'm in.

How wise our Father God is. Being betrothed in those days, you were considered to be married. The bride just did not enter to the permanent residence of her husbands home until he invited her in. In this way no public shame would come on Mary when she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

Is being betrothed today possible? Is that the same thing as what we consider engagement?

Hi Ishida, yes catholics do believe that but I should have added the no debate post before I started this thread. I hope that you don't mind, I was hoping this would be more of a sharing as opposed to a debate thread.

Was there anything else that spoke to you about the Gospel Ishida? How did God speak to your heart and what is He doing in your life in this word?

Many of those names are people of faith...
I'm not here for debate really, just...do you interpret it differently? Since I've heard this before, I'd like to know..

Those names are people of faith for sure. Ishida, why do think that Jesus comes to the world through these people?

I will answer this for you Ishida to the best of my ability but I think that to do so would make this thread something that it is not intended to become. Alot of catholics in GT could answer this perfectly though!

or better yet, here is a link from a charismatic catholic apologetist.

lol, the first thing he says is "I am not an apologist."

A few of those kings weren't so hot though, but compared to Israel's kings.. x_x; But for the most part, he picked a pretty good line, I would think. :P

 When I read Matthew 1, I always get the impression that God planned all this; that He chose each one of those people for this purpose....just like He prepared Israel for His coming. They didn't even know it, but they were a little part of His plan....that kinda makes me think, what about us? what about people today? are we participating in a great Story that we don't see yet, because it's still being 'written'?
hehe :)
Well I wonder what plans God has for each of us.
Let His will be done :prayer:

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

I’ve just been reading a book by Scott Hahn and he devoted several chapters to David and the kingdom; how important David was as the man who defines kingship, a man after God’s own heart. David was the man whose kingdom was to last for ever. So when Matthew start with stating that Jesus Christ is the son of David is extremely significant

Interesting trio of women mentioned in the genealogy

Tamar who committed incest with her father in law

Ruth who was a foreigner

Bathsheba who committed adultery with David

I once heard a sermon about this but I can’t remember what was said about it.

Thank you winsome and Spring. I am glad that you see the promises of God take shape in Jesus. Isnt it interesting like you said winsome that Jesus came from some not so perfect people.

It is nice to be talking about the lineage of Jesus. I had the thought the other day when I heard this reading at mass that it was also to relate to the fact taht God became a human being like one of us. He really did come from people, all the way back to Adam.

Isabella,

you asked if beign betrothed was possible in our day. I am not sure if it still exists. Maybe in some part of the world? HMM, I have never thought about this. Mary was planned to be given to Jospeh in a big way.

Yes I know that about Mary. That is what made me wonder about today. I wonder if God betrothes us today. I kind of feel he does, but have not got any solid evidence of it.
