Backgrounds listed Forward or Backward

When a background or item in the catalogue is listed as forward or backward position...what determins which position it will take when you equip it with your character?

The one I want to equip is Painters Easel....but when I equip it...the easel is in the forward arrangement blocking my arm and hand.

The foreground and background designations in the catalog itself are merely for previewing what an item will look like with a blank character.

To have an item in the background, equip two other Special Items and then the item you want in the background. Note, background images (the ones under the Background category in the Special Items catalog) automatically go in the third slot.

In your case, equip one more Special Item besides the palette and then the easel.

OH thank you Celticgrace.....for reading my question and giving me such an easy to understand, correct answer.

I got it all fixed up and my easel is in place. All I had to do was add a pair of earings to my character before the easel.
