I read an article yesterday on the internet about churches that are into believing that God sometimes slams people around, throws them into a wall, or makes them act in a very violent way that hurts them. I was in a church years ago that I got hurt many times physically. One of the times, the pastor broke my ribs and said that God told her to do what she was doing. But this other, I had never heard of. Anybody ever heard of this?

What type of Church was this? I never heard of such a thing and would be very leery of such practices.

Am I allowed to post the e-mail address of where I found it? It happened at some well known revivals with very well known tele-evangelist. I was shocked because I had always thought these preachers were suppose to be godly. Some, I had never heard of that talked of enjoying getting slammed into the wall or floor. I used to be in that denomination but i didn't think seriously that is where preachers got the idea.

Is it common practice for preachers to hit people HARD with their fist or open hand? I got hit in a church service more recently by a visiting preacher. He told me that God loves me, then he hit me hard on my head about 5 times. It gave me a headache for a couple of days.

My advice? Punch the "preacher" back and get the heck out of that church and never go back....

Sorry, I can't believe that an all loving, forgiving God would "slam people around". Nope, I don't accept this.

Um, violence isn't going to solve anything. Report him to the one who is over him and/or the proper authorities.

No, it's a very uncommon practice indeed, for god reason, and this is the first I've heard of it.
Please tell me you've changed churches? Please? :prayer:

Well that says it all!
If it were me , I would take a baseball bat and when he hit me I would break his arm or leg and then tell him God loves him and that God is using him to display his faith healing on television. :) ;)

To understand this fully one must understand where these people are getting their ideas from, they are getting some of their ideas from the famous early 20th century English Evangelist Smith Wigglesworth.
Anyone who know pentecostal history will know he was famous for things similiar to that, but no reports of people getting hurt, someone with some disease would come to him, and he would pray for them and pray the sickness gone and punch them in the gut, and they would be healed.
Most of these televangelists get caught up in trying to copy someone elses ministry, for me, when I pray over people, I barely touch them, because I don't want to make it even seem that I am pushing them over, I believe that those who do, are idiots.
But anyway that is where that televangelist got his idea from, copycats, that have no orignal ideas, and apparently don't listen to the voice of God.

The preacher is gone, he was visiting. He later apoligized but it was way after the damage was done. I talked to my pastor about the fact I got hit hard several times. I told him that "why should it be a sin for me to take a knife and cut myself bad but a visiting preacher can come in and hit me and get away with it and why wouldn't it be a sin for him too". ( I was a bad cutter at the time). I don't trust preachers I don't know now. But, I know that God don't slam people but what religion or whatever does the spirits slam people to the floor or through them around the room? The article I read, the pastor said that God threw in across the room but I was wondering what were they really into, it don't sound like true christianity, does it?

No, Debbi. It sounds nothing like true Christianity!

I wish I knew, a lot of people involved in the Word of Faith movement might try something like that.
But I don't know, I thought debbi had mentioned a televangislist, they make me angry sometimes

There is a great deal to be said for a little negative reinforcement administered at just the right time. ;)

It doesn't sound to much like Christianity, Charismatics and Pentecostals can get caught up in what they think is a "move of God" not realising it is just the flesh wanting to something crazy.

Ever heard of Kenneth Hagin, he hit people hard and God healed them of stuff like tumors. Or heard of Benny Hinn, they had to get catchers after he got sued and a woman died becuase someone fell on her. If I'm allowed, here is where I got this http;://www.letusreason.org/Pent33.htm
read it and tell me what you think about it.

Benny Hinn bops people on the head, but has his "catchers" behind 'em to keep 'em from being hurt.
Seriously, my Grandfather-in-law knew a guy who was once visited by faith healers and he told them about various ailments and they told him they were going to "beat the Devil out of him" and Grandpa said "they almost killed him". These things do happen in some out of the mainstream churches all the time. It doesn't generally happen in average churches and people in those churches would generally frown on the practice.

Isnt it amazing what people can do with the Word of God? To bring physical pain on someone in His name? Or those who handle poisonous snakes, etc that have misconstrued the Word.....amazing....

No, not like that Br Max.

Suzie, I believe Br. Max may be referring to the works of Martin Luther.
I cannot pass judgement, but you might want to read some of Luther's writings - his thoughts on sinful behaviour are quite interesting ;)

That's OK, I am familiar with Luther ---just attempting to see where those are "going to go" with this

Well, I'm glad we agree that Debbi's experiences are saddening, and 'wrong.' :(
But in honesty, I know that texts can be taken out-of context, and I wonder whether Br. Max was alluding to the fact that Luther condones certain sinful behaviours once one is 'saved,' and that perhaps Luther's work has been take out of context in the actions of these churches who seem to be acting in unusual ways?
(Br Max, please correct me if I'm totally out of line! :sorry: )

I'm only saying that misunderstandings and misconstrued passages are all over the place. Sola Scriptura has become NUDA Scriptura - Justification by faith unto good works has become - justification to sin after a confession of faith.

What did NUDA and Luther have to do with church violence? My thread is completely sidetracked.

I apologise, Debbi... the thread has moved from fellowship to discussion, and I'm part to blame :sorry:
It hasn't sidetracked - I think there's a move to try to understand why Christians would act in such an unusual way :)
