I though it would be nice to have a welcome for all the alumni from various Adventist Academies & Colleges, Universities as well as new comers to our forum from other schools. A way to share current information for all our graduates that have walked the halls of our schools and others. A way to renew the bond of fellowship that we had and hope to refresh even if online on the internet. There is no pressure or need to provide information on yourself, or were you graduated from, but feel free to do so and enjoy the carmaraderie and fellowship.

Maybe share information or events from your Alumni newsletter or find about links so you can receive any news events that are featured about your Alma Mater, or in its newsletter. I think it can be a great blessing to read about your school or what classmates are doing and how life is blessing them. It is very heart warming to know how God has blessed them and to share encouragement, and best of all read all the wonderful truths and Bible studies on this site.

Thank you so much for your time, and 'The Lord Jesus Christ Bless and Keep You"

Red:wave:

(IF you dont see your Alma Mater in the list above just put it down and I'll add it in the opening greeting)

It is almost insulting to have SVA (Spring Valley Academy) named and not have MVA named.

For a little bit of insight. MVA sits on some great property just outside of Mount Vernon, Ohio. Also, the school was established in 1893.

'SVA' also stands for Shenandoah Valley Academy, who to our great shame we will never forget as they beat us in baseball, 31 to 2...:o

Of course we didnt find out till later thats all they did in their 'off hours', while we only played football and basketball...but at least I learned to play in that game and finally 'diagnosed' that all gloves had 'holes' but you could them throw in the air and at least knock the baseball down...;)

'Rio Lindo' is spanish for 'beautiful river', how did they get that name, as they must be a thousand miles north of the 'Rio Grande'.....

Hi Red,

You are right on both counts. However the Rio Grande isn't the only river in the country nor is it the most beautiful.

Rio Lindo Academy sits just above the Russian River in Sonoma County in Northern California, just a few miles north of Santa Rosa, CA, which is about 60 miles north of San Fransisco. It is a spectactular location near the heart of California's Wine Country.

Pacific Union College is approximatey 30 miles to the east and is nesteled in the hills above St. Helena, CA which is in the very heart of the Napa Valley.

Your brother in Christ,
Doc

Also, the list included both schools I attended as a student, and those I had some employment association in some way.

Yes. I took two groups down after Katrina to Waveland, MS. On our way the first time we stopped by BMA and took the whole school out to pizza (they were in desperate need of a morale boost). We also did some work on the campus. They sent some pics of the renovations and it looks great.

Can't say the same for those who lost everything though.

I have about 4 gigs of pictures taken all up and down the Mississippi coast. I stood in the churches and homes and listened to their stories. We cleared roads and cleared debris next to houses so the people could pitch tents to live in. We handed out food and diapers and soap and toothbrushes, bandaids, etc. We gave a car away to a family who lost all their cars. We cut trees off of houses that were still standing (I became good friends with my chainsaw!).

Thousands and thousands of homes were destroyed and the people were left with nothing. One guy sent his wife and son North and decided to stay with the house. His wife and son were killed in a car accident fleeing Katrina. His house was destroyed. He was a wreck.

BMA, while they had some damage, was just a stop on the way to the real needs of people. I took a group to New York shortly after 911 and stood down IN ground zero and watched as the body of a fallen fire fighter was taken up out of that hole. I listened to the stories of the rescue workers, at least the ones willing to talk (served as a chaplain/pastor in a church literally a stone's throw away from the destruction which was set up for serving the rescue workers). I saw first-hand the damage caused, and it was sobering to say the least. But even that experience did not prepare me for the large scale destruction found in Mississippi and the total loss that those people faced. The pictures don't even come close to revealing just how devestating it was.

And even that PALES next to the destruction in Indonesia and other places affected by the tsunami a couple years ago. Over 1/4 MILLION dead, and complete devastation.

Sometimes we need to ask ourselves how effective we really are at caring for the poor and providing for those in need. We'll pump 10's or 100's of thousands of dollars into restoring BMA in the midst of 10's of thousands of other people who lost everything. While I applaud the efforts made by the SDA church at times, at other times it seems that their priorities are a bit skewed and miss the mark completely.

Just the observations of a guy who tries to meet real needs for those really in need as best I can with the resources available to me. I know we can do better!

I remember them checking our rooms to make sure we had gone to church! (22 years old!) And when they figured out that we left to play tackle football they made sure we were dressed in 'church clothes' before leaving. That's when we dressed up and then went to our cars to change and THEN go play tackle football.

It completely reminded me of being in boarding academy! We were adults! Yet they treated us like high-schoolers. (I'm over it now! BTW.):)

From my perspective, the stricter rules were/are a good thing... I went to Andrews from Southern and noticed the EXTREME difference in the overall spiritual atomsphere. (Andrews was MUCH more lax) Yes you can find what you want, but looking back now I would much rather my kids be "required" to go to worships and be out of the dorm on Sabbath morning than be in a dorm where you can't sleep from cigarette smoke and most door props are beer bottles. I also believe it taught a little about responsiblity, you aren't where you are supposed to be you are in trouble.

Granted, there is a difference btw 22 and 18 y/o freshman. Most of those 18 y/o came from academies where they were under the same rules and probably would not know how to handle themselves, as it is they have a lot more freedom.

We should treat college students as adults. Treating them like kids only encourages irresponsible behavior until they are in their late 20s (instead of late teens).

We would do well to encourage responsibility and independence in our highschool students (talking about US as a whole).

People don't become adults until you allow them to make decisions (and be responsible for those decisions) themselves. Coddling them and treating them as children does them no favors.

I was actually discussing the required worships lately and came to a new perspective. It never made sense to me to require a worship because then it wouldn't be worship :) I used to go sit down and listen to someone read something for 5-10 minutes to get a worship point. But when some of us got together in our room to pray and study together it didn't "count". My new perspective is that some may need it, but worships shouldn't be dull-lifeless-just-to-get-a-point kind of worship, but a place where one can encounter the Almighty God. I guess for some if worships were not required they would not attend church or any worship meeting or even crack a Bible outside of a religion class. I'm not totally convinced requiring worships for those individuals is the answer though. The quality of the worships would probably make a big difference in how I look at it.

Maybe the guys dorm was different but I saw no beer bottles or smelled any smoke in all my years in girl's/women's dorms.

But not Fletcher Academy and Mount Pisgah Academy? :(

As I said before, does someone have something against North Carolina?

Finally, someone who went to La Sierra University. I went there before it was a university. Was going through this to see if it was mentioned by anyone.

I spent a year at Auburn Adventist Academy. I'm not a full-blown SDA, and I disagree on some of their beliefs. But I recommend an SDA High School Education to anyone. Thanks AAA!

Monterey Bay Academy.

Watsonville, California

Great School. Strong spiritual influence on me. My Bible teacher there (Dale Ratzlaff) encouraged us to outline our Bibles with different topics. To this day ... I use those outlines in my Bible. Hope that isn't heresy. But we were taught a strong personal relationship was needed in our lives rather than strict obedience to the nuts and bolts. Our focus needed to be on Jesus rather than the do's and don'ts of religion.
