Farm barred from hosting Muslim sacrifice
Published: Dec. 21, 2007 at 8:33 AM

PRINCETON, N.C., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A North Carolina farmer who has long sold lambs and goats to Muslims for holiday sacrifices has been barred by the state from hosting the slaughters.

Eddie Rowe, who for the past six years has sold lambs and goats to Muslim families on the first day of Eid al-Adha -- which translates as "festival of sacrifice" -- and allowed them to conduct the ceremonial slaughters at his farm, was told by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that the practice created an unsanitary and illegal slaughter facility on his property, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The department issued a restraining order barring Rowe from allowing the animals to be killed at his farm.

Not surprising - you have to be licensed to slaughter unless it is for personal use. I can't allow the slaughter of any wethers I might sell on my property (not that I want that happening anyway).

No reason the community couldn't work a deal with a lic. slaughter facility or set up one of their own.

I agree this is probably a health and sanitation issue rather than
"religious discrimination". While I could slaughter my own farm
animals on my property if I wish, or hire a mobile slaughterer,
anything large scale such as this, especially if the slaughtered
animals were consumed, would need supervision.
