View Full Version : Wishing each other a Merry CHRISTmas!

I walked into a local national hardware store chain and was greeted with "Happy Holidays!" I asked, "what holidays are you talking about?" and got a quizzical look, followed by a frown in return.
I used to think "X-mas" was just an abbreviation to make the writing easier. Then I became a Christian and realized how wrong I was...
A town nearby is debating whether or not to allow Christmas lights on public buildings.
Nativity scenes throughout the country are being prohibited because of their "religious message"Etc. etc. etc.
Well, I am thankful to God for this season - for Jesus, the CHRIST - who is the reason for the season!
"For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this."
And so to begin this thread where we might wish the poster above us a proper greeting for this season...
Merry Christmas!! everyone! :amen::amen: :amen:

Last nite the classic "Frosty The Snowman" cartoon was on, and as I watched the beginning intro song & the names on it (Jimmy Durante, etc), I had a really strong melancholy feeling come over me about Christmas season -- & how it used to be so fun & carefree when I was younger. The classics that help make it what it is.
Then I reflected on what's happening to it today w/ the ACLU trying to remove Jesus & every hint of God from it each year & the commercial enterprise it's now come to be instead of the meanings it once had.
All I can say is I will celebrate Jesus Christ EVERY day of every year He gives me life to do it in.
MAY GOD BE PRAISED AND GLORIFIED
FOREVER AND EVER.
:amen: :preach:
Nice thread =)

Is x-mas bad? The X is the same symbol used in the fish to represent Christ.
You see, the X in Xmas did not originate as our English alphabet's X but as the symbol X in the Greek alphabet, called Chi, with a hard ch. The Greek Chi or X is the first letter in the Greek word Christos. Eric G. Gration claims that as early as the first century the X was used as Christ's initial. Certainly through church history we can trace this usage. In many manuscripts of the New Testament, X abbreviates Christos (Xristos). In ancient Christian art X and XR (Chi Ro--the first two letters in Greek of Christos abbreviate his name. We find that this practice entered the Old English language as early as AD 100. Moreover, Wycliff and other devout believers used X as an abbreviation for Christ. Were they trying to take Christ away and substitute an unknown quantity? The idea is preposterous.
Some may use Xmas today as an unchristian shortcut for Christmas, but the ancient abbreviation by no means originated as such. The scribes who copied New Testament manuscripts had no intention of taking Christ out of the New Testament. They used the abbreviation simply to save time and space. We use abbreviations for the same purpose today, as witness FDR, HST, JFK, LBJ, and a host of others. Xmas is a legitimate abbreviation. I do not use it because of the possible misunderstanding it often causes as a result of its misrepresentation or abuse. But by no means can the use of the abbreviation be a valid objection to the observance of Christmas itself! Is God against abbreviations?

Just out of curiosity, what do YOU think "Xmas" means and how did you arrive at your definition on becoming a Christian?
FYI, it's rude to treat someone who wishes you Happy Holidays the way you did. Christmas lights have nothing to do with Christianity or Jesus, and you can put up as many nativity scenes as you like in your yard...I guarantee it.
Now, what's the trouble again?
Merry Christmas, Flicka!
I pray you and yours have a wonderful and joyous Holiday Season!
God bless you richly and abundantly!

The ACLU is doing nothing of the sort. Misinformation is not the way to go.
It's because we read things like:
Well, here is something that will affect everyone here, whether you are a believer or not. The ACLU, in the District Court of San Francisco, has filed a lawsuit against the federal government to officially remove Christmas from the list of federal holidays. However, the former head of the Virginia chapter of the ACLU, the one who failed the suit, is currently unavailable for comment due to his seven year prison sentence for possession of child pornography. The ACLU claims that this is the only religious holiday that is on the list, which they are right.
and don't check if it's true or not.

Excellent information - and not stuff I knew. I stand corrected. Thank you very much!
But lest you think me completely ignorant, I would only say that through the years, I've discussed ["X-Mas"] with people off and on - never as a crusade mind you, just in conversation, with other Christians, co-workers, etc. and honestly, no one I've ever discussed this with has brought up this background information.
I do not doubt the veracity of your information. But the meaning of words (and abbreviations) can change from culture to culture, from generation to generation.
Would you agree that today's generation is perhaps not altogether informed about the history and original meaning of X-mas, and that that definition is generally not what people today have in mind when they abbreviate Christmas thus?
Some may use Xmas today as an unchristian shortcut for Christmas,
Yes - and really the point I was addressing. I've no desire to make this an issue. It is the Christmas Season after all. Is there really a need to debate the origin of X-Mas?
In my circles, in my city, and in those with whom I've discussed this topic, the "shortcut" understanding of X-mas is more the norm - as a replacement for "Christ". And personally, even knowing the history as I now do, I still prefer not to use it.
Merry Christmas and may God bless...

As a non Christan visitor to your forums I'm just curious if this is the kind of behavior I should expect from most Christians? Is it acceptable and encouraged? I'm just wondering because I normally strive to be polite to everyone, especially during the holidays, and if this is what I would have to do if I ever convert I'm not sure I should consider it.

I'm just gonna throw my 2 cents worth in here...
No...this is not a typical response...I would not presume to speak for indagroove...
...I would, however, just like to comment that some of us are starting to become "offended" (and that's really not the correct word...tired and concerned is more appropriate) by the lack of respect for our beliefs...
It seems...quite often...that it's more than OK for people to to voice their angst over saying "Merry Christmas" or public displays of Nativity Scenes...or Christmas Trees and such...
But....Oh my goodness if a Christian displays some angst over Christ being removed from Christmas...
Please don't misunderstand...I believe you have a valid question and I personally have respect for your thoughts...but it is a little tiring for the most part...to have to always be concerned about offending everyone else...and it seems very few are concerned about, and sometime go out of their way to offend believers...
...those who also cause such a hoopla (as well as taking legal action) over Christmas...the 10 Commandments...religious statements/art displayed not only in government facilities...but simply in public places...
I'm personally discouraged and it breaks my heart when these things are forcibly removed by legal action...is this what I can continue to expect from non-Christians?
 flicka...I hope this helps shed a bit of understanding...
Blessings!

I would just like to point out that the bell ringer is the face of Christian outreach.
Each and every one of us needs to be aware of our witness in Christ is a moment by moment thing. Every thing we do, everything we say, every reaction we have is a witness to our faith.
As imperfect humans, we should strive to emulate our Saviour, but do not always make it there, but still we are to try, in His strength. When we fail it is due to us doing it in our own strength.
Php 4:13 (http://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/Phl/Phl004.html#13) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
God Bless.

Don't consider Christianity if it's something you try out to see if the bahaviour fits. But you do raise an excellent point on how we're perceived and I think people should take note.

To be honest, before you judge him on the post (which may be too late:confused: ), we should ask to find out what was in his mind at the time.
There's been a recent public battle over different stores refusing to use "Merry Christmas" greetings becuz it uses the name of Christ in it... they want the PC greetings so they dont "offend" people.
It's very possible that he was actively promoting the "Merry Christmas" greeting to make a point and let the charity volunteers & store clerks know that they like Merry Christmas & want it to stay.
I don't see anything wrong with that - namely if he didn't do it in a SNOTTY rude way. We weren't there to see how he did it; what his tone was, if he had a smile on his face... etc. etc.
If he did it in a snotty way with a scowl, or leaned over glaring at her before he put some $ in the pail, then I'd agree with you - it's not good.
Lastly, let's point this out - HE KINDLY GAVE HIS MONEY TO THE CHARITY. He's done more than alot of other "kinder" people who might not donate anything.

alas...the problem lies in the written word once again...
Using a word such "forced" stirs up images of someone in your face...arm twisted behind the back shouting "say uncle" or "say Merry Christmas"
There are many times...when shopping for Christmas...I just want to step up on a soapbox and start screaming...
"MERRY CHRISTMAS"
One of my favorite home and garden stores no longer carry Nativity Scenes...the manager's response..."We just don't carry them anymore"
This is a Home & Garden Store with about 2 square blocks of "Holiday Decorations" but no Nativity Scenes for the Christmas Holiday?? I don't shop there anymore...
Holiday gifts and such I can understand...as Hanukkah is also celebrated this time of year...
I used to live in a predominately Jewish area...and not one Jew I ever said Merry Christmas to was offended...
Not one...
I certainly would not be offended if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah, or Happy Kwanza
...As BustedFlat noted...I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to expect a Christian organization not to fall into the PC pit...."Onward Christian Soldier" right into the PC pit....
I seriously doubt anyone would be running amuck "forcing" Average Joe on the street to say Merry Christmas...

I hate to say this (namely of myself), but ALL OF US ARE CONDITIONED BY THE PC agenda.
We live in a culture saturated with it, and we have to operate in it to some degree.
How many times in the pulpits have I even heard strong pastors say this "I'm sorry to have to admit this, but God says.... ______________" (fill in the blank).
Are we SORRY that we have to relay God's truth on a matter? Are we SORRY that it's God's truth? No, but we say that to "lessen the blow" to the offensed crowd... becuz our culture is so PC.
It's a spirit of offense imho. And public speakers like Joel Osteen are helping to promote this dark spirit. Truth isn't welcome today.
Anyways, I'm on a derailed tangent... *puts on the breaks* lol Back to topic -
yes, I think it was his wording that gave that impression of a negative/hostile act: using "forced" and "stuffed my money" lingo puts that spin onto it... but it doesn't mean he badgered her like an angry bear.
I HOPE he didn't! (so much for the Christmas spirit!) LOL

Merry X-Mas!
Oh I know that drives some crazy, but the origin of it really was to keep Christ in Christmas.

If you took the time to type out Christ and Christmas... you could have just typed out Merry Christmas to give a kind sentiment to people rather than provocation with it? To me it just seems combative in nature; maybe I'm just seeing things....

Mat 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."
Mat 1:22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
Mat 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us"
Blessings brother!
