The following rules and guildelines are to be used as a guideline for dabating:

Guidelines for Debating

Once a debate is initiated, all parties must agree upon a date to start and all parties involved must be ready to begin on the established day.
In the team area, while two person teams are welcome, it is preferable that there be three to five members on a team.
The teams shall for all intents and purposes be called the “Pro’s” (those for) and the “Con’s.” (those against) The first team and second team shall decide upon two things: (a) who is to be designated as the person who will make the Opening Statement. (b) The remaining members will decide which and who will introduce each point.
Do your research first before any debate begins! Typically, formal debates usually last between 30-60 minutes. With each person being allowed 3 minutes to introduce points, then each member given 3 minutes to either defend or rebut each point. However, in this area, 24 hours shall be allowed between Opening statements, introduction of points, rebuttal of points, and defense of points. (Note: Research cannot be stressed enough! Even if you disagree you should make yourself familiar with your opponent’s viewpoint. Many a debate has been lost because one team was not familiar with the opponent’s viewpoints, and was caught unexpected. Expect the unexpected! Do your research before initiating any formal debate.)
You are allowed to use any material at your disposal provided proper credit is given. The only exception to the rule is newspapers. Any reference to newspaper articles shall only include a mention of the issue in any news paper. Proper credit is defined in this fashion: Don White, Electrons in an Excited State, Scientific America, Vol. 3, Ed. 24, 1993, periodical, [periodical on-line] accessed 12/6/07, found on the World Wide Web at http://www.________ (http://www.________/). All quoted material shall be identified by Author, Title, Source, Publisher, Copyright information, type, access date, and a web link to verify evidence. Also, all quoted material shall not exceed 20% of the whole.
All the general rules of the Forum shall be applicable.
In any formal debate, debating will usually take between 30-60 minutes. However, since this is not possible, formal debates here will take longer.
For our purposes, formal debating here will be similar to courtroom trials. The first team (Pro) shall designate one person to make the Opening statement. As a general rule, the opening statement should include a general statement as to why your team supports the issue, the reason(s) you will debate in support of, and conclude with a summary. After the first team has made their opening statement, the second team will be allowed the same courtesy.
The Opening Statements for both sides shall be made on the same day. Once the Opening Statements have been made for both sides, 24 hours shall pass before introduction of evidence in support of, or evidence against.
After 24 hours have passed, the first team will open debating by presenting their points. If it is a three person team, three points, 4 person, 4 points, etc. Each point will be presented by a different member of the team. i.e.: member 1; point a, member 2; point b; member 3; point c. All points will be presented in succession. After the last point is entered, 24 hours shall pass before the other team can introduce their points.
The same rules for #10 shall apply to counter-points. After all counter-points are entered, 24 hours shall pass before rebuttals shall start.
When rebuttals start, one rule above all rules will be strictly enforced, attack the evidence, not the presenter. Any attacks on the presenter will void that member’s evidence and the general rules of the forum will be enforced. This includes, but not limited to, edits, warnings, infractions, and in extreme cases, bans may be issued.
When rebuttals begin, each point/counter-point shall be given a chance to be debated. For example: Point A (Pro) shall be given the chance to be rebutted by each team member against. Example: 3 members, 3 arguments against. And then the “Con” shall be given a chance to rebut team 1’s arguments. Once both sides have argued point A, it shall be considered closed and no further debating will be allowed. 24 hours shall pass before moving on to point B.
The same procedure shall be followed for each succeeding points.
Once the Pro side has debated, the Con side will be allowed the same courtesy.
Once all rebuttals are finished, 24 hours shall pass and one member of each team shall present their teams closing statements. Once both teams have made their closing arguments, the debate will be considered over and the thread will be closed. An example of the preceding debate is:
