Speak Now and I'll Shoot

My brother, Denny, and most of his friends were avowed bachelors and avid pranksters. When Denny's best friend, Tim, got engaged, my brother was best man.

The wedding had a country-western theme with the men wearing western suits, string-ties, and cowboy boots.

When the minister asked, "If anyone has just reason why these two should not be joined together, speak now or forever hold your peace," the groomsmen all spun around, whipped back their suit jackets, brandishing cap pistols and menacing stares.

No one spoke, but we've laughed ever since.

This would never happen because our Eastern Crowning service doesn't have this in the wedding ceremony.

Please share things that our Church does not do simply because we are the Eastern Church.

We do not have to put on a show because our Holy Services are Heavenly Worship.

This strikes me as needless and counter productive.

Can we instead just focus on practicing those things that we believe, and not rubbing the faces of everyone else in how far their choices fall short?

I agree.

On a related note though, does anyone know anywhere that I could read about some of the different traditions of Orthodox weddings. I've never been to one and probably my own will be the first one I go to. I've been curious about what they're like and how they are different from other weddings I've been to.

Still not being Orthodox and such, I think it's really cool. :P If I ever got married (LOL ya right) I would want a fantasy theme. With elves, dragons, gnomes, halflings, dwarves, wizards, warriors, everything. The reception would have bread and gruel. LOL.

Well, since we're the "Eastern Church," we would never have a "Western" wedding ceremony. :ebil:

We would wear robes and sandals and carry scimitars, instead of wearing cowboy hats and boots and carrying 6-shooters. Our weddings would look more like The Seven Samurai than The Magnificent Seven:

I can appreciate the humor in the action - and certinly it would work with the right 'crew' but I can see where 'traditionalists' would really freak out about it. Might have been better if that was at the reception, since the groomsmen would still be in their 'outfits' - like when the bride and groom enter there could be some kind of 'scene' made - since the reception is more 'personal', less 'formal' than the wedding ceremony.

(I wonder whose idea the move was?? :D)

Before we became Orthodox, I had gotten my wife's consent to renew our vows on our 10th anniversary and we were going to do a western theme but with her waiting at the altar and her dad walking me down the aisle with a double-barrelled shotgun in my back.

It takes away from the solemnity of one of the most serious moments of one's life (a vow to keep for the rest of your life), and turns it into a joke.

I agree that the reception is the place for jokes.

I guess choirfiend missed the :) in the title.

This was supposed to be a fun thread.

The objection would come long before the wedding and look more like this.

Oh yeah!!! Now we're talking. I got to dress up as an Ashigaru (peasant foot infantry) many years ago and a full samurai outfit would be wicked!
