View Full Version : A crass question (sort of)...

A colleague and I are team teaching a combo Philosophy/Religion/Literature course next semester and we have decided, among a bunch of other great stuff, to use Salinger's Franny and Zooey. For those of you familiar with Franny, you know that she has discovered The Way of the Pilgrim and she has begun using the Jesus Prayer.
**chuckles to self.....this is going to be so much fun!!!**
Franny and her b/f discuss (at the very end of the short story) the fact that in Pantheism, the use of the mantra evokes the same sorts of experiences, etc. Ok, so I am going to slay that part,....but...
I have a couple of great DVD's discussing Eastern Pantheistic Monism and excellent footage of Tibetan monks practicing their trade.
So, crass question is: I have searched Amazon and Googled the heck out of this and cannot seem to find a DVD (or even a VHS would suffice) of a discussion of the Jesus Prayer. Ideally, it would also have some footage (crass part) of EO monks practicing the Prayer.....a short discussion (or even a long one that I could pare down). Do any of you know of such?
I do plan to play a chapter from (mp3) from St. Ignatius Brianchaninov ... but a video discussion would be so much more effective with these college freshmen and sophomores.
Is there a Mt Athos vid that gets into it?
Thanks so much for the help.

Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) has been videotaped. I think there is a youtube video on him too. He also gave a presentation on the Jesus prayer.
I really love his British accent. I like to listen to him whenever possible..
Don't forget the section in The Gifts of the Desert by Kyriakos Markides where he mentions Metropolitan Kallistos. Would it be possible for Kyriakos or Metropolitan Kallistos to come over and talk with your students as a guest speaker?

Better yet, could you invite some monks to come and address the students or even have the students take a field trip to a local monastery? That would even be better.
Claremont in Southern California takes their comparative religion students to Orthodox Churches every semester.
And there are usually one or two who do convert.

Can I please register for your course?
Actually, I was a big Salinger fan and at some point while reading the Way of the Pilgrim I remembered Franny and Zooey from all those years ago. I should read it again.

Aria: Since it is primarily a LITR prefix, I have to take my chances where they come.....and as such, no budget for bringing Bishop Kallistos or any other "name" in. A trip to a monestery is out as the closest is a couple of hours away and I, for THIS class, would never get it approved (if it was Comp. Religions or even Christian Doctrine....maybe). In fact, I did bring in a local monk/iconographer to speak several years ago, and as it turns out he was from a schismatic bunch. He did a good job on his presentation, but I am much more careful now. :)
Monica: I would LOVE to have you in the class. Salinger is a real piece of work. My heart pours out for Franny as she becomes sick and weak at the end of the story....yet the prayer is on her lips! :

wasn't there a "new movie" about Romanian (?) monastics mentioned on TAW? Also, a youtube search ? Ostrov -- not sure how directly useful ... just brainstorming ...

Any endeavor made by modern man to approach the Holy Mountain is indeed an intimate and fruitful experience. The authors of this text aimed at creating a means of communication with the majesty of Mount Athos and the surrounding culture’s land, life, and art. This comes with audio enhancement, slide shows, video footage, and Byzantine music – all of which create a beautiful harmony to stimulate and captivate any audience. Content in Greek and English.

I will ask my priest. He has lots of videos and CDs from all over Russia. Some are in Russian, some are dubbed, others are in English. All are wonderful.
Hey, what about searching on YouTube. There are lots of great videos there.
Check out the one at OP. There is a thread here and at OP on great Orthodox videos at YouTube.

When do you need to know?
We will be doing Salinger in mid-late February.
Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions. I should be able to find something useful amongst your offerings.
Thank you.

I wouldn't present Franny and Zooey... Especially Zooey. Salinger tries to combat the Jesus Prayer with hindu thinking.
When I read the book, I thought "Wow, I had no ideea The Way of the Pilgrim is that popular!". I'm not against the book. I even enjoyed it, but I don't think it would be a good starting point to present the Jesus Prayer.
I've later read that Salinger was appealed by hinduism and had problems with his marriage. Some consider Franny is a portrait of his wife who had read The Way of the Pilgrim and Salinger tries to persuade her away from the Jesus Prayer.
Either way, I think you will do a good job.
God bless!

Thank you so much for the warning ma, but I am fully aware of what I am up against. Most of the students in the class have had me before and they know my pre-disposition to EO. They find me a real enigma. I am prepared to deal with Zooey. He is a know it all, and they hate know-it-alls.....and fortunately most of my students are Christians (though Prots).
I am using this, once again, to do some under the radar evangelism! ;)

Why you learn about Orthodoxy for many years but never convert?
Now that is the question of the decade isn't it. There are a number of reasons that are complicated and some of which are quite personal. Some day I will post my story, but this is not the time.
However, one never knows what the Nativity Fast will bring.....stay tuned... ;)

I'm not looking to 'stay tuned.'
I don't follow your reasoning, if you are taught and learn the truths about the Orthodox faith you are supposed to convert.

Look, I am not going to argue with you as to why I have not converted. I was hoping that my words above would give you some indication that I am not ready to tell the tale just yet and that I am a work in progress.
My "stay tuned" comment was in jest (but may contain hidden meaning :) ).
