I'm looking for an icon of the Great Martyr Marina basically pummeling a demon that tried to mess with her.

I think that's awesome. Like, St. George the Winner awesome.

Has anyone come across an image like that on the internet? All I can find is the standard iconography: image from head to the waist, carrying the standard martyr's cross.

Here's the first one bigger. I think I have a picture of the second one that is actually painted. I'll see if I can find it and scan it.

Here's the color version. It's a little bit different than the drawing, but pretty much the same. It's pretty western looking, but it's the only one I think I've ever seen. I wouldn't have even thought of it if Greg hadn't posted the drawing. Once I saw that, I knew I had seen it before.

I scanned this in from Icons of the Byzantine Museum of Athens by Myrtali Acheimastou-Potamianou. Page 291. Photo by A. Skiadaresis.

no problem. I've got dozens of icon books, and a file cabinet full of prints. I have lots of rare stuff that I'll probably never get a chance to paint, so I might as well make use of it some other way.

Wow, that's a kickass icon! lolll :P I'm definitely gonna save that one when I get home. The first one just looks like she's patting it on the head like a pet or something lol. Oh, does anyone have the story behind that one? I'd love to read it!

St. Marina was the daughter of a pagan man in the 3rd century. Since her mother had died when she was born, her father let her be brought up by a Christian woman.

When St. Marina had become Christian herself she vowed never to marry. Her father tried to talk her into marrying the king nevertheless, but when she refused, the king was infuriated and ordered her to sacrifice to the pagan gods. When she also refused to do this, the king had her tortured.

St. Marina endured the torments by praying, and the king had her imprisoned. There, the Devil tried to scare her but failed three times and was finally beaten by her when she fought him with a hammer. A dragon came to her and tried to swallow her, but again, through her faith, St. Marina endured.

She was finally beheaded by the king, but preached and prayed until the very last moment and many were converted. The excecutioner hesitated to kill her, but she talked him into it.

Today her relics are in Athens and Mt. Athos. There is also another saint who is sometimes called Marina.
