I would love to hear thoughts on this passage

Jeremiah 51

39In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD.
40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.
41How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations!
42The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.
43Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby.
44And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.
45 My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.
46And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.
47Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
48Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.
49As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth.
50Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.
51We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the LORD's house.
52Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.
53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.
54A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans:
55Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:
56Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.
57 And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts. 58Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be
weary.

I happen to think that the whole of the bible is as relevant today as it was when it was written. ;)

Jeremiah 51 is a prophesy that depicts the fall of Babylon then but also illustrates the fall of the yet to come New Babylon depicted in Revelations 18 so yes, it is very relevant.

Amen i agree

I also believe that we see SOME things happen in increments. For instance it is said in Jeremiah 51 that the princes and the mighty men are asleep and drunk. I believe we will see the fullness of this but i believe we see the foreshadowings of it today in both the church and the world. I believe society and the church, the sheep, just follow where they are led and the masses of people are the sheep and the goats.

To me this is a very interesting passage

Prophecy usually does have foreshadowing to clue people in about a prophetic event before said event does happen. :)

I agree. The entire Bible is relevant to every generation of believers. So yes, I would say that it is important for modern Christians to understand Jeremiah 51.

Has anyone noticed anything they would call spiritual blindness or sleep or drunkeness in the leadership of the church and the world?

In one instance i can look at the fact that the usa has more people imprisoned than any nation in the world. I can see the fact they are continually letting people loose on the streets because of overcrowding and then filling them up again with people who dont relly need to be there at all.

Blindness, sleep, drunkeness, or a well thought out plan to help create havoc and fear in the streets when used in conjunction with other measures? If one looks, i dont see how we cant wonder

Yep, Time. Now consider the fact that one of the most fertile fields to harvest is prison and the new fact that prison libraries are going to be cleared out of Christian texts because they don't want the Koran there - what the sam hill pc-ness is going on. Is no one in authority or policy making positions in this country a born-again Christian? Apparently not. :(

OK, you had to bump this when I need to read Chap. 9 for study TONIGHT and I still haven't read Chap. 51!

:P

Time, would you mind taking a look at Chap. 8 and the phrase early on "in that time". The group had several ideas as to what "that time" was referring to - the time contemporary to Jeremiah for one. What other times? One of the fellows had a really interesting idea.

1At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:

2And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.
3And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.
4Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?
5Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.
6I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.
7Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.
8How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain. 9The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

Jeremiah prophecies from his time period to the end of the age. His prophecy of the 70 years was furthered in Daniel to the end of time making it 70 weeks of years. Here in Jeremiah 8 many people would say this refers to the time of the captivity or the time of the destruciton of Jerusalem, the only problem is the dead bones were not brought out of the graves, so this prophecy concerns a time yet to come.

Imho, ALMOST EVERY time we see 'in that day', 'At that time', 'in the latter days', etc, this is referring to the last days, or the time very close to the trib, including the trib.

This is seen in Jeremiah 51 and in Daniel, in many places referring to events of the end.

The prophecy points to the destruction of ancient Babylon. It happened as was said if you read Daniel 5. However from reading Revelation we can see that Babylon the Great has some similarity with ancient babylon. The people of Babylon was so drunk they could not recognize the enemy. Babylon the Great has drunken people so much that those people cannot see the truth. They are drunken with commandments of men and false teachings. When God refers to Israel as adulterous he means that they have corrupted his teaching with doctrines from the heathens. Babylon committing fornication shares the same meaning.
