Prayer Pragmatist: You pray more than part-time, and your prayer life may be quite active. But your prayers are goal-oriented. Try seeing prayer as more relational. Sit in quiet. Read some scripture or a thoughtful book and meditate on it. Rest in prayer.

Do you pray without ceasing, or forget to begin? Take our prayer quiz and assess your prayer life.

The questions are too biased to allow for anyone with continuous contemplative attitude to prayer, so they are unlikely to identify anyone who has such an approach.

In other words, they find pragmatists, because that is all they are looking for. And in turn, that is all they look for, because it is all they know.

Pragmatist? No, no, I'm not a pragmatist, I rarely spend time in intercessory prayer. I think I inhabit the second and sometimes third mansions, to put it in St Teresa of Avila's language.

Yet another Prayer Pragmatist here, but I found some of the questions hard to answer. For a lot of the questions, more than one answer applied to me (especially the last question, where all 4 answers seemed to apply, depending on how I'm feeling at the time!)

 I see a pattern developing here. :) I do not believe it was a good quiz, but it was fun to think about my prayer life as I was ticking off the answers. I suppose that many folks have goal-oriented prayer lives even if the goal is to pray for others or to give thanks.

Pragmatist, according to this quiz. However, I disagree with the view of the "ideal" prayer life as having to be structured and scheduled, and on many of the questions none of the answers applied to me.

Q1. I pray:

Without ceasing - since our spirits are in commune with God, we are actually in a constant state of prayer. Though we don't always realize it, we are always connected. However, this connection can be made more explicit... for me, this just simply varies based on whatever else is going on in my life.Q2. I tend to pray: 1. Only when I go to church2. Often, in an ongoing conversation with God3. As a ritual, using set prayers, sacred text, or scheduled times4. 2 and 3

Q3. If I go without praying for a few days, I feel:1. Spiritually hungry and disconnected from God2. Guilty 3. No different 4. Better than when I do pray

Q4. After praying, I tend to feel:1. Peaceful, Energized, and Focused2. Energized3. Confused4. No different than before

Q5. I usually pray to:1. Allow a heavy burden and yolk to be lifted.2. Give thanks for something3. Commune with God 4. Ask for what I need

Q6. I pray most often:1. In the early morning or before going to bed2. Whenever, where ever3. When I'm in a church4. Before meals

Q7. I prefer to pray:1. In a group with others2. With a spiritual guide--a pastor, priest, or counselor 3. With my spouse or a close friend 4. Alone

Q8. To me, prayer is:1. An ongoing state of connectivity to God... sometimes conversation, sometimes meditation... sometimes just "being still"2. Meditation on spiritual things3. An active engagement of spiritual forces 4. A curiosity--I'm not sure what it's for

Q9. When I pray, I:1. Sit or kneel and pray silently2. Talk out loud to God3. Let my mind drift 4. Pace back and forth 5. Depends on the situation, sometimes all of these, sometimes none of these

Q10. I like to combine praying with:1. Fasting 2. Walking or jogging 3. Reading the Bible4. Anything I'm doing5. Existing

Q11. I'd like to improve my prayer life by:1. Meeting with a pastor or priest2. Reading a good book on prayer3. Committing to a daily practice 4. I don't have time or room for improvement5. Making conversations with God more explicit and more personal

Q12. One word to describe my prayer life is:1. Satisfying 2. Frustrating 3. Rewarding 4. Difficult5. Alloftheabove (sp?)I don't trust beliefnet to evaluate my prayerlife, so you (pl.) can have at it...

But I wouldn't say my prayers were "goal-oriented" -- they're just there.

Not only did I come up a pragmatist like everybody else, but I followed Criada's lead. I took the quiz three times, varying my answers from one extreme to the other, and I *kept* coming up pragmatist. I don't know how to make it come out any other way.

Oh, and I don't even know the meaning of the word "pragmatist."
