It is Japanese poetry. It rarely rhymes but it must have 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second, and 5 syllables in the last for a total of 17. Read some of the great examples below.

Oh, we used to love doing these things in highschool. We had an English teacher who made us keep a Creative writing journal. She required three entries per week. On the day it was due, we would all write three haikus at lunch right before the class. It was hilarious. She would get so mad but she couldn't punish the whole class.

DST ends Nov 4th !
http://www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1.html
At 2 a.m. on November 4, 2007, groggy Americans will turn their clocks back one hour, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) (http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/sci/A0814845.html).
The federal law that established "daylight time" in the United States does not require any area to observe daylight saving time. But if a state chooses to observe DST, it must follow the starting and ending dates set by the law. From 1986 to 2006 this was the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, but starting in 2007, it is observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, adding about a month to daylight saving time. (See: New Federal Law (http://www.infoplease.com/spot/daylight1.html#new).)
